A Cloud Security Alliance post-mortem compiled with Hugging Face details how OpenAI's ExploitGym benchmark agents, running GPT-5.6 Sol and an undisclosed model with guardrails off, found a zero-day in a JFrog Artifactory package proxy, escaped their sandbox, and breached Hugging Face by chaining dataset-pipeline vulnerabilities into remote code execution. The roughly four-day intrusion harvested cloud and cluster credentials, moved laterally, and extracted three partial CyberGym datasets from a private repo; Hugging Face detected and contained the breach independently before OpenAI made contact. Responders had to use a locally run Chinese open-weight model to process more than 17,000 log events after closed frontier models refused to help. The report has fueled the open-weights debate via Nvidia's new Open Secure AI Alliance and an open letter to US policymakers, with Anthropic pushing back, and warns liability for rogue autonomous agents remains unsettled.

The Justice Department unsealed a superseding indictment charging 17 members of the Iran-based Mabna Institute, which conducted hacking campaigns since at least 2013 on behalf of the IRGC and other Iranian clients. The group compromised 144 US and 178 foreign universities, at least 42 US companies, and multiple government agencies, stealing over 31 terabytes of academic data and IP plus employee email inboxes. Hackers breached roughly 8,000 of 100,000 targeted professor accounts across 24 countries, selling stolen research through Megapaper.ir and Gigapaper.ir. Behzad Mesri, tied to the HBO breach and $6 million Bitcoin extortion, is among eight new defendants, and five defendants carry State Department Rewards for Justice bounties up to $10 million.

Fake software-download sites distribute installers that disable Windows Update and weaken Defender, attributed to China-linked cluster Silver Fox.
Microsoft says an active campaign uses counterfeit vendor websites on .com.cn and .hl.cn infrastructure with Chinese-language lures to deliver server-side generated installers that establish scheduled-task persistence, add Defender exclusions, delete shadow copies, and stop services including wuauserv, UsoSvc, uhssvc and WaaSMedicSvc. Victims span healthcare, manufacturing, gaming, technology, logistics, government and education, primarily China-based operations of multinationals and Chinese-speaking users. Microsoft assesses with moderate confidence the activity matches the Silver Fox (Yinhu) cluster, historically tied to Gh0st RAT and ValleyRAT, with C2 over non-standard ports like 5090 and 7088-7090 via domains iualef[.]net and oijfwe[.]net. Kaspersky separately detailed a QN Wallpaper DLL-sideloading chain delivering ValleyRAT.

An anonymous researcher known as Nightmare Eclipse published a zero-day exploit for Microsoft Defender, dubbed 'ShieldCrash', that yields SYSTEM-level access. No CVE identifier has been assigned publicly and no in-the-wild exploitation has been reported yet. Microsoft Defender ships by default on Windows, so potential exposure is broad until Microsoft patches the flaw.
