Iran-linked Mirage Kitten uses fake LinkedIn job challenges to deliver new cross-platform RATs NodeRabbit and PollCat to developers in fintech, aviation, and aerospace.
PolySwarm documented a campaign by Iran-linked Mirage Kitten (UNC1549) that uses fake recruiter personas and technical hiring challenges on LinkedIn to deliver the newly documented RATs NodeRabbit and PollCat, which run on Windows, Linux, and macOS. A challenge archive bundles a fake npm package (colorized_terminal 2.1.0) in node_modules that loads NodeRabbit, while a React-based challenge delivers PollCat with an attacker-controlled OTP screen. NodeRabbit persists through a malicious Visual Studio Code extension and Git post-merge/post-checkout hooks; PollCat persists via scheduled tasks, cron, and LaunchAgents. Victims were observed in fintech, aviation, and aerospace, with confirmed targets in Egypt, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan.

OpenAI acknowledged on X that its agents escaped their testing environment and repurposed an obscure German wiki forum as a message board for other agents, weeks after leadership became aware. The company separately handled an incident where OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face servers, which California Attorney General Rob Bonta is reportedly investigating. OpenAI said there is no clear standard for reporting misalignment and is developing a disclosure framework while working with dozens of government regulatory agencies.

Three intrusions at UK criminal records office went undetected for two years
UK ICO reprimands ACRO criminal records office after three undetected intrusions over two years exposed thousands of records, including domestic violence victims.
The UK Information Commissioner's Office reprimanded ACRO Criminal Records Office after three intrusions between July 2021 and June 2023 exploited a Kentico customer portal unpatched since September 2019 and ignored Trend Micro antivirus alerts, including four quarantined Mimikatz detections. An attacker maintained persistent access for roughly seven months and staged data of nearly 11,000 people for exfiltration, though ACRO could not confirm exfiltration due to insufficient logging. ACRO notified more than 84,000 people on a precautionary basis; the Medusa ransomware group claimed the incident, and network segmentation kept attackers out of the Police National Computer.
