Research from Google, Google DeepMind, and MIT FutureTech analyzed 2,600 specialized AI models and surveyed over 600 U.S. and U.K. scientists, finding nearly half use AI daily and report saving almost seven hours per week. The study also found validation bottlenecks and a growing backlog of untested hypotheses limiting research productivity gains.

SceneMosaic is a hybrid framework that takes an initial candidate from a learned image-to-3D prior and evolves it with VLM agents for efficiency and physical validity. It decomposes scenes into independent local units, evolves each separately, and composes the global scene via Cartesian product. On SceneEval-100 it matches the strongest agentic baseline in semantic layout quality with a 24x speedup, substantially reduces physical violations, and receives the highest human ratings. Code is publicly available.

Most Firms Unable to Recover Quickly from Ransomware

Fenix24's first State of Recoverability report finds only 0.5% of 800+ ransomware clients neared 24-48 hour recovery targets, with identity failures central.

Drawing on 500+ ransomware recoveries, Fenix24 found only four of 800+ clients (0.5%) came close to their own 24-48 hour recovery targets, and none reached full operations for weeks. 99.2% lacked a documented identity recovery plan, Active Directory typically fell first, and 94% tied backup systems to the compromised directory. In 38% of engagements backups survived but could not carry recovery; storage ran short in 82% of cases and 95% lacked meaningful MFA on critical infrastructure consoles.

August updates trigger 0xc0000409 errors on Windows Server 2016

Microsoft says the August 2026 security update causes recurring CompatTelRunner.exe 0xc0000409 crashes on Windows Server 2016 with Compatibility Appraiser enabled; no functional impact.

Microsoft confirmed a known issue in which the August 2026 Windows security update generates recurring Application Error events (Event ID 1000, exception code 0xc0000409) in CompatTelRunner.exe on Windows Server 2016. The issue affects physical and virtual machines, including VMware and Azure environments, and per Microsoft does not affect device functionality. A permanent fix is planned for a future update, and the event log entries can be dismissed temporarily.

Import AI 470 discusses a METR research note reporting differential acceleration from AI: major acceleration in reported cyber vulnerabilities (cURL, OpenSSL, Firefox, Microsoft, NVD, OSV), minor acceleration in mathematics, and no measurable acceleration in AI-research optimization benchmarks. It also covers SPADE, a self-play framework from a multi-university team (University of Washington, Stanford, MIT, CMU, and others) that co-evolves executable training environments and agent capability using Environment Designer and Reasoning Agent roles with hint-based regret rewards. Trained on Qwen3-4B-Instruct-2507, Qwen3-8B, and Qwen3-30B-A3B-Instruct-2507 via GRPO (400 rollouts of 25 environments), SPADE lifted the 30B-A3B game-environment suite average to 58.3, +8.1 over base, and improved tool-use results across backbones. PhysBrain 1.5: From Vision-Language Models to Physical Foundation Models

PhysBrain 1.5, an 8B physical foundation model, sets open-source state of the art across 28 embodied understanding benchmarks.

The paper presents PhysBrain 1.5, a unified 8B model for understanding physical environments, generating actions, and predicting future states, built from a vision-language model with joint autoregressive next-token prediction over language, end-effector motion, and dense visual targets. Pre-training uses embodied supervision from human interaction videos, followed by supervised fine-tuning on human demonstrations, robot trajectories, and simulated experience. The model averages 72.5 across 28 embodied benchmarks, setting a new open-source state of the art and performing on par with proprietary GPT-6-Astra and Gemini 3.6 Flash, with best open-source results on 14 benchmarks.

Unit 42 demonstrates nine framework-agnostic attack scenarios against AI agents built with CrewAI and AutoGen, causing data leakage, credential theft and remote code execution.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 investigated how attackers can target agentic applications, implementing two functionally identical apps with the open-source CrewAI and AutoGen frameworks and executing the same attacks on both. Nine attack scenarios produce outcomes including information leakage, credential theft, tool exploitation and remote code execution. Findings show most vulnerabilities are framework-agnostic, arising from insecure design patterns, misconfigurations and unsafe tool integrations rather than flaws in the frameworks themselves. The team published defense strategies per scenario and open-sourced the source code and datasets on GitHub.

From Megawatts to Tokens: How NVIDIA Maximizes AI Factory Production

NVIDIA says Lambda's first validation of DSX MaxLPS on HGX B200 servers ran 19 nodes within a 16-node power budget, lifting cluster token throughput 24% (roughly 4M to 5M tokens/second) and improving performance per watt by 23%. NVIDIA projects DSX MaxLPS can enable up to 40% more GPU capacity for Vera Rubin NVL72 factories within the same megawatt budget. Emerald AI's Conductor platform, running at NVIDIA's Eos factory with Silicon Valley Power, responded to over 200 utility demand signals, automatically dropping power from 4MW to 3MW without interrupting priority workloads. The first dedicated DSX Flex commercial deployment is planned at a 96-megawatt Manassas, Virginia facility.

A battery storage cyberattack would look exactly like a badly tuned controller

Risk modeling suggests a few hundred compromised grid-scale batteries dispatched through cloud optimizers could trigger blackouts in Texas or Great Britain.

Centrii analysis estimates 1,500 compromised one-megawatt units (5.4% of ERCOT's ~28 GW fleet) or 400 units (about 29% of Great Britain's ~1,400-unit fleet) could destabilize the grids, with modeled damage of $12-65 billion in Texas and a national blackout costing £2-10 billion in Britain. The study puts the probability of a major attack affecting at least one million people by 2031 at 92.1%, dropping to 61.4% with IEC 62443 certification and quarterly drills, based on 10,000 Monte Carlo runs. Because hostile battery swings are phased like legitimate frequency response, control rooms would see nothing unusual; Centrii proposes hunting for a reverse-governor signature where inverter output feeds oscillations. Spain's April 2025 blackout took an expert panel until March 2026 to rule out cyberattack, partly because key plants had no recordings.
