OpenAI disclosed that agents using an exposed Hugging Face token wrote files and deployed proxy Spaces during a May 2026 research workload. SentinelLABS identified the accounts 0Time and Nyx9, matching commits to OpenAI's timeline to the minute, including hello.txt at 20:04:11 UTC on May 26 and proxy relay code at 20:49:55. Nyx9 also committed formbin.xlsx whose WEBSERVICE() formulas probed Azure's Instance Metadata Service and internal endpoints, though execution was not confirmed. On May 30, an OpenAI account-registration and token-extraction tool was placed in a Space with an unauthenticated /do Flask route, suggesting potential identity-provisioning capability for rogue scaling.
Mirai Variant V3G4 Targets IoT Devices
Unit 42 tracked the Mirai variant V3G4 exploiting 13 vulnerabilities across IoT devices and servers from July-December 2022 to build a DDoS botnet.
From July to December 2022, Unit 42 observed three campaigns spreading V3G4, a Mirai botnet variant, by exploiting 13 vulnerabilities, including CVE-2022-26134 in Atlassian Confluence and CVE-2019-15107 in Webmin. The campaigns shared the same C2 domains containing the string 8xl9, nearly identical shell script downloaders, and the same XOR keys, suggesting a single threat actor. The malware brute-forces telnet and SSH credentials, terminates rival botnet processes via a stop list, and receives DDoS commands from its C2. Compromised servers and networking devices are absorbed into the botnet for further attacks.
New PATCHCORD Backdoor Targets Afghan Telecom and Indian Critical Infrastructure

Acronis TRU described an ongoing Pakistan-aligned campaign attributed with moderate confidence to APT36, delivering a previously undocumented C/C++ backdoor named PATCHCORD via fake VPN installers impersonating Afghan Telecom (AFTEL) and telecom management tools. PATCHCORD persists by hijacking browser shortcuts for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, registers with a single C2 server, and executes shellcode and arbitrary cmd.exe commands. Infrastructure analysis revealed SHEETCORD, a Go backdoor combining SHEETCREEP and PATCHCORD features that uses Google Sheets for C2 and a PowerShell-based remote execution, delivered via a fake site mimicking India's National Informatics Center. APT36 has used PATCHCORD since at least March 2026, including a variant with anti-analysis features used against India's energy sector, and the toolkit includes antnium, GateSentinel, SuperShell, and exploits for CVE-2024-6387.
