ICS Patch Tuesday: Schneider Electric, Siemens Fix Critical Flaws

September ICS Patch Tuesday brings critical fixes from Schneider Electric, Siemens, and Aveva, including CVSS 9.2 authentication flaw CVE-2026-3869 in Modicon M580 controllers.

Schneider Electric's September advisories include a critical authentication vulnerability, CVE-2026-3869 with a CVSS score of 9.2, in Modicon M580 and Modicon M580 Safety controllers, plus high-severity bugs in PowerLogic T300 and EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert. Siemens published nine new advisories, four rated critical across Reyrolle 7SR5, Open Interface Services, Industrial Edge Management, and SIMOVE Fleetmanager and SIPLANT, and began rolling out fixes for CVE-2026-31431, a 7.8-rated Linux kernel flaw enabling root shell access. Aveva disclosed four flaws in Pipeline Integrity Monitor's PIMBoards, including a hardcoded encryption key and MD5-hashed passwords, plus an unsafe deserialization issue in Enterprise SCADA. Rockwell Automation separately issued nine advisories covering RSLinx Classic and multiple controller products.

2026-005: High Vulnerability in the Linux Kernel ("Copy Fail")

Linux kernel flaw CVE-2026-31431 ('Copy Fail', CVSS 7.8) allows unprivileged users to gain root via AF_ALG; a public PoC is out and most distros remain unpatched.

Disclosed on 29 April 2026, CVE-2026-31431 is a local privilege escalation in the Linux kernel's algif_aead module (AF_ALG crypto API), CVSS 7.8, stemming from a 2017 in-place optimisation. By chaining an AF_ALG socket operation with splice(), an unprivileged user can write 4 bytes into an arbitrary page-cache page, e.g. corrupting a setuid binary like /usr/bin/su to obtain a root shell. It affects virtually all kernels built since 2017, including Ubuntu 20.04-24.04, Amazon Linux 2023, RHEL 10.1, and SUSE 16; the mainline fix landed 1 April 2026 but no vendor packages were available as of 30 April. CERT-EU recommends the interim mitigation (disable algif_aead) and blocking AF_ALG via seccomp, prioritising Kubernetes nodes and CI/CD runners.

Iranian cyber targeting of dissidents, activists and journalists

UK NCSC, FBI, and Dutch AIVD expose CHOSEN BRICK spyware used by Iranian state actors against dissidents, activists, and journalists worldwide.

A joint advisory from the UK NCSC, FBI, and Dutch AIVD details CHOSEN BRICK, a Windows spyware family used by Iranian state cyber actors since at least 2025 against dissidents, activists, and journalists in the UK, US, and Netherlands. Actors build rapport on WhatsApp and Telegram impersonating known contacts or platform support, then deliver disguised payloads resembling apps such as Telegram, Norton, RunwayML, or fake MRI results. The malware persists via HKCU Run registry keys, adds Microsoft Defender exclusions, and uses a unique Telegram bot C2 per victim. Capabilities include screen capture, microphone recording, process enumeration, email and messaging data theft, file deletion, and system wiping; victim data has appeared on pro-Iranian leak sites.
