Product engineer Mridul Singhai said the company found no evidence of successful breaches or mass account takeovers, while the Grok chatbot confirmed attackers are mass-triggering resets using public usernames. Users are being advised to enable two-factor authentication and Password Reset Protect while the investigation continues.

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences used browser extension data from 715 U.S. X users, recruited in September and October 2024, to compare self-reported values with the content the For You feed amplified. It found that replying to posts—only 6.8% of observed interactions—disproportionately shapes the engagement-optimizing algorithm, creating runaway feedback loops of value-misaligned ragebait that were more pronounced for self-identified Democrats. Co-author Ziv Epstein, a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University, said the observational work is intended to spur debate on algorithm transparency and user control over feeds.

The Russian government instructed data center operators to deploy protections against drone strikes under a presidential decree signed by Putin that allows temporary state administration of critical infrastructure operators failing to defend against Ukrainian hacks and drone strikes. Although data centers are not formally critical infrastructure in Russia, the decree applies to them because other sectors depend heavily on cloud services; Russia has more than 180 data centers, over 80% in the European region within range of Ukrainian strikes. Malwarebytes warns the reset flood can serve as cover for phishing and urges reset protection, 2FA, and unique passwords.
