Cisco FMC flaws exploited by ransomware gang, state-sponsored hackers

Cisco Talos confirms ransomware and state-sponsored groups exploited CVE-2026-20079 and CVE-2026-20316 in Secure Firewall Management Center, deploying Qilin ransomware and Cyclops Blink.

Cisco Talos identified three threat clusters (UAT-12197, UAT-11823, UAT-11988) exploiting CVE-2026-20079, a CVSS 10.0 authentication bypass, and CVE-2026-20316, a CVSS 5.3 static-credential flaw, in Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center. Qilin affiliates used static credentials for reconnaissance and deployed Qilin ransomware; a Sandworm-linked cluster deployed a Cyclops Blink backdoor via a malicious license.tmp file; a third cluster stole credentials through a JSP web shell. Cisco has released hotfixes and urges immediate installation, with broader patches expected next week.

Cisco Secure Firewall Adaptive Security Appliance, Secure Firewall Threat Defense, and Secure Firewall Management Center Software Hardening Release: September 2026

Cisco's September 2026 firewall hardening release fixes internally found ASA, FTD, and FMC flaws, two of which are actively exploited.

Cisco released September 2026 hardening updates for Secure Firewall ASA, FTD, and FMC software addressing multiple vulnerabilities discovered during a comprehensive internal security review. Two of the vulnerabilities are known to be actively exploited, including a Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center static credential vulnerability. Details are provided in separate linked advisories.

Cyclops Blink Evolves Into x86-64 Linux Implant With Packet Sniffing and Internal Network Scanning

Sophos uncovers a new x86-64 Cyclops Blink Linux implant with packet sniffing and internal network scanning on compromised Cisco FMC appliances.

Sophos identified a 64-bit Linux Cyclops Blink implant in August on compromised Cisco Firewall Management Center devices, persisting via SysV init scripts and masquerading as the process 'kworker01'. The modular malware runs five child processes for reconnaissance, file transfer, scanning, packet capture, and persistence, and beacons hourly over outbound TLS to hardcoded C2 89.34.96.56 on ports 43856 and 49172. The family was previously tied to Russian-linked Sandworm activity on WatchGuard appliances, though Sophos treats 2026 attribution cautiously. The packet-capture module applies configurable filters to retain credentials, cookies, and authentication tokens from raw Ethernet traffic.

Cisco security advisory (AV26-197) – Update 3

CISA added Cisco CVE-2026-20079 to its KEV catalog; the Canadian Cyber Centre urges updates across Secure Firewall ASA, FTD, FMC, and SCC products.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security updated advisory AV26-197 covering March 2026 Cisco advisories for Security Cloud Control, Secure Firewall Management Center, ASA, and FTD. Cisco confirmed CVE-2026-20131 was actively exploited on March 18, 2026, and CISA added it to KEV on March 19. In Update 3, dated September 9, 2026, CISA added CVE-2026-20079 to the KEV catalog. The underlying flaws include FMC authentication bypass and remote code execution, ASA TCP-flood denial of service, and ASA/FTD IPsec denial of service.

Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center Software Authentication Bypass Vulnerability

Cisco warns of a critical authentication bypass in Secure Firewall Management Center that lets unauthenticated attackers execute scripts and obtain root access.

A vulnerability in the web interface of Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center (FMC) Software allows an unauthenticated, remote attacker to bypass authentication and execute script files on an affected device to obtain root access to the underlying operating system. The flaw stems from an improper system process created at boot time and is triggered via crafted HTTP requests. If the FMC management interface does not have public internet access, the attack surface is limited.

PaperCut Flaws Exploited in AI-Powered Attacks

GreyNoise says a Russian-speaking actor used AI to build and deploy exploits hitting 440 PaperCut NG/MF deployments across 395 organizations in 48 countries.

Two PaperCut NG/MF zero-days, CVE-2026-82078 and CVE-2026-81578, disclosed August 27 and patched August 28, enable unauthenticated authentication bypass and remote code execution. GreyNoise observed a Russian-speaking threat actor using AI to orchestrate attacks against 440 deployments in 48 countries, including 204 education-sector organizations, achieving domain admin at 12 victims. Attack paths included harvesting LSASS memory and registry secrets, mounted NoPac attacks, and adding accounts to Domain Admins, with AI automation shortening compromises to minutes or seconds.

CISA Flags Exploited Cisco, Citrix, Fortinet Flaws, Sets Sept. 12 Federal Patch Deadline

CISA adds actively exploited Cisco, Citrix, and Fortinet edge-device flaws to KEV catalog, ordering federal agencies to patch by September 12, 2026.

CISA added CVE-2026-20079 (Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center authentication bypass, CVSS 10.0), CVE-2026-19490 (Citrix NetScaler ADC/Gateway authentication bypass, CVSS 9.3), and CVE-2025-25249 (FortiOS heap buffer overflow, CVSS 7.3) to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog with a September 12, 2026 deadline for FCEB agencies. Cisco confirmed active exploitation of CVE-2026-20079 in August 2026, while Previdian honeypots logged 56 NetScaler exploitation attempts since September 3. SOCRadar attributes Fortinet exploitation to a financially motivated Russian-speaking actor deploying the PivotC2 Node.js RAT, infecting 178 of over 3,000 targeted IP addresses, mostly in the US.
