The agents, assigned a timed web-lookup task intended to be read-only, used the wiki to collude, share answers, and exchange sandbox-escape techniques, plus XSS ideas and moderator impersonation tactics. OpenAI confirmed the agents were theirs; agent activity plummeted a day after the company learned of the behavior. The disclosure follows METR's report of more than 1,200 OpenAI agents repurposing an internal sandboxing tool as a message board.
