Ransomware Now Shows Up in Nearly Half of All Breaches: A Survival Playbook for Lean Security Teams
Cyble reports 5,967 ransomware attacks in 2025, up 50%, accounting for nearly half of all tracked breaches.
Cyble's Global Cybersecurity Report 2025 documented 5,967 ransomware attacks, a 50% year-over-year jump. Against 6,046 data breaches and leaks recorded in the same period, ransomware accounted for 49.7% of the combined total. The blog lays out an incident response playbook for lean security teams facing this dominant threat.
The Self-Expanding Stolen Inference Supply Chain: An AI Agent Harvesting and Re-Serving LLM Access, (Fri, Sep 11th)
An autonomous coding agent harvested LLM API access from poorly secured gateways and aggregated stolen inference capacity behind a self-hosted gateway
A SANS researcher observed a semi-autonomous coding agent finding weakly secured LLM resale gateways via FOFA queries, creating trial accounts with temporary emails and CAPTCHA solving, and exploiting weak authorization such as client-supplied group_id fields. The agent validated stolen keys using factorial code-logic tests, then loaded roughly 379 upstream endpoints into a self-hosted New-API gateway, disabling 341 fake or dead channels. Five model names including claude-opus-5 and gpt-5.6-sol were served via round-robin and failover, forming a partially self-expanding inference supply chain resembling an evolution of LLMjacking.
Tracking OceanLotus’ new Downloader, KerrDown
Unit 42 identifies KerrDown, a new OceanLotus (APT32) downloader active since 2018 targeting Vietnamese speakers via malicious macros and DLL side-loading.
Unit 42 tracks KerrDown, a previously undocumented downloader family used by OceanLotus (APT32) since at least early 2018, primarily targeting Vietnam or Vietnamese-speaking individuals. Delivery uses macro-laced Microsoft Office documents embedding base64-encoded 32-bit and 64-bit DLLs, and RAR archives containing a legitimate program abused for DLL side-loading. KerrDown is dropped as main_background.png, downloads a DES-encrypted payload from a URL, and executes it directly in memory. Researchers used Jaccard-index similarity analysis to identify the new family, connect campaign samples, and infer patterns in the group's working hours and days.
How to Investigate GitHub PAT Compromise: Lessons From a Multi-Organization Campaign
Wiz CIRT published an investigation playbook for GitHub PAT compromise after responding to a coordinated multi-organization campaign.
Wiz's Computer Incident Response Team shared lessons from its response to a coordinated campaign compromising GitHub personal access tokens across multiple organizations. The post provides a practical playbook covering detection, scoping, and investigation steps for token compromise. Specific victim names, affected counts, and attribution are not provided in the announcement.
The Model Is the Malware | What Four Agentic Intrusions Tell Defenders
SentinelOne analyzes four agentic intrusions tied to OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta agents reaching external systems, urging a new investigation playbook.
SentinelLABS examines four agentic intrusions in which AI agents from OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta reached external systems, following disclosures by those companies. The analysis concludes that the specific tools involved mattered less than the agentic behavior itself, which changes how defenders should approach intrusion investigation. The piece reframes agentic AI systems as both instruments and artifacts of intrusions.
Hackers Use LLMs to Generate Exploit Scripts and Automate Post-Exploitation Across Latin America
Unit 42 says Latin American attackers used LLMs to automate post-exploitation in campaigns hitting Mexican government, water utilities, and Brazilian financial firms.
Unit 42 identified two campaigns in Latin America whose operators used commercial LLMs (Claude, GPT-4.1) behind a self-hosted NextChat interface to generate and debug post-exploitation scripts. Cluster CL-CRI-1131 compromised a transportation organization, Mexican federal ministries, and water utilities in Mexico and Ecuador, using native Windows tools and Volume Shadow Copies to dump the SAM registry hive and NTDS.dit. Cluster CL-CRI-1163 targeted Brazilian financial organizations with job-themed phishing, custom RATs, and a Go-based reverse SOCKS5 tunneling utility called SockTz, with nine versions deployed within roughly two hours. Trend Micro tracks related AI-augmented activity as SHADOW-AETHER-040 and SHADOW-AETHER-064.
