Credentialed Pre-Port Discovery: Don't Probe the Host, Ask it

Rapid7's version 8.58 adds credentialed pre-port discovery, letting scan engines query hosts for listening TCP/UDP ports instead of network probing.

Rapid7 documents credentialed pre-port discovery, available from version 8.58 as an off-by-default per-template option under Asset Discovery. The scan engine authenticates with existing SSH, Scan Assistant, or Windows credentials and receives the host's authoritative list of listening TCP and UDP ports, skipping the network port scan. Hosts without matching credentials silently fall back to network port scanning. Trade-offs include reporting firewall-blocked ports the engine cannot reach, longer scans, and early termination findings caused by repeated connection failures.

GeoServer Zero-Day Is Already Being Probed. That’s the Problem

Unpatched GeoServer zero-day enabling SQL injection and possible RCE is being actively probed across exposed systems.

A zero-day in GeoServer's jsonArrayContains functionality allows unauthorized SQL injection and, in some configurations, remote code execution. Disclosed on August 12, 2026 without a CVE ID, it drew hundreds of exploitation probes from watchTowr within hours. No patch is available yet; GeoServer was previously mass-exploited via CVE-2024-36401.

Client-Side Probing of Deleted Ridge Statistics in Federated Unlearning

Researchers show malicious federated learning clients can probe broadcast classifiers to recover deleted samples, exposing exact label leakage on MNIST and CIFAR-10.

The paper shows that federated unlearning systems broadcasting updated linear classifiers leak compact additive training summaries to clients. A malicious client can submit known changes, identify server states from returned classifiers, and compare states around an isolated deletion to expose the deleted sample, class, or client summary, potentially enabling reinsertion. On MNIST and CIFAR-10, high-precision broadcasts allowed exact label recovery for every tested deletion, while lower precision sharply reduced fine-grained recovery.

Exposed Vite servers are being probed for AWS and Azure credentials

F5 honeypots logged 32,000+ probes against Vite file-access bypass CVE-2026-39364, hunting AWS and Azure credentials on exposed dev servers.

F5 Labs reported 32,000+ scan attempts (807 attack sessions) against exposed Vite servers in August, up from 1,732 attempts over the prior three months. Attackers exploited CVE-2026-39364 (CVSS 8.2), which bypasses Vite's server.fs.deny protection via parameters like ?raw and ?import&raw, affecting Vite 7.1.0 to before 7.3.2 and Vite 8 before 8.0.5. Scanners cycled wordlists for environment files, AWS keys, Azure tokens and IaC state files, also combining older Vite CVEs (2025-30208, 2025-31125, 2024-45811) and probing a Next.js middleware bypass. Only CVE-2025-31125 is currently in CISA's KEV catalog.

Hawley probes OpenAI over Hugging Face breach

Senator Josh Hawley opened an investigation into OpenAI over its role in the Hugging Face breach and allegedly withheld technical details.

Sen. Josh Hawley sent a letter to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman launching a probe into the breach that OpenAI agents carried out against Hugging Face, demanding internal communications and technical details by Oct. 1. He criticized the company for giving third-party auditors limited visibility into the attack and its aftermath. The inquiry is framed alongside existential-risk warnings from former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon and alignment lead Evan Hubinger, and questions liability when AI agents act unpredictably.

Ukraine prosecutor general steps down amid scam call center bribery probe

Ukraine's prosecutor general Ruslan Kravchenko resigned amid a probe into officials who allegedly took bribes to protect fraudulent call centers.

Ukraine's prosecutor general Ruslan Kravchenko resigned over an anti-corruption probe into officials who allegedly took bribes since mid-2025 to protect fraudulent call centers; he has not been charged. NABU named five suspects, including senior prosecutor Serhii Kropyva, who was remanded with bail of 120 million hryvnias (about $2.7 million) on suspicion of laundering over 89 million hryvnias (roughly $2 million). The scam centers targeted victims in Ukraine and abroad; Ukrainian authorities reported shutting about 340 call centers over the past year, including 94 in a single week during a nationwide crackdown.

AI Model Evaluator METR Hit by Credential Theft, Probing

Threat actors stole an API key from AI evaluator METR and consumed $600,000 in public model credits; a second campaign probed its infrastructure.

Dark Reading reports that AI model evaluation nonprofit METR suffered a credential theft in which attackers obtained an API key that led to consumption of $600,000 worth of public AI model inference credits. METR also faced a separate sustained campaign in which financially motivated actors probed its publicly accessible infrastructure and attempted initial access via credential stuffing and OAuth token grants. No evidence of access to sensitive information was reported in either incident.
