Angry Birds: Toy Ghouls’ new toys
Kaspersky tracks ransomware group Toy Ghouls deploying new custom backdoors, mqtt-bird-agent and matrix-bird-agent, using HiveMQ MQTT and Element as C2 channels.
Kaspersky reports that Toy Ghouls (also known as Bearlyfy, Laboo.boo and Feral Wolf), a financially motivated group targeting Russian organizations since 2025, shifted from leaked Babuk and LockBit builders and public GitHub tools to its custom GenieLocker ransomware. In early July 2026 the group deployed two custom backdoors: mqtt-bird-agent 0.1.0 using the public HiveMQ MQTT broker as C2, and matrix-bird-agent 0.1.0 using the Element messenger. The backdoors are delivered via WinRM using Evil-WinRM and WinRM-fs, persist as Windows services, and encrypt their configuration with ChaCha20-Poly1305 keyed to the machine's MachineGuid registry value.

CenterPoint Energy confirmed an unauthorized third party accessed customer personal data via an external system, disclosed in an SEC Form 8-K filing.
CenterPoint Energy disclosed in a September 14, 2026 Form 8-K that an unauthorized third party obtained personal information of some customers through one of the company's external systems. The company learned of the incident after an online post claimed possession of a customer dataset, then activated incident-response protocols and engaged external forensic specialists. Electric and gas delivery operations were unaffected and the company does not expect a material financial impact, though response, notification, and compliance costs are being incurred. The number of affected customers, data types, and threat actor remain undisclosed as the investigation continues.

Anthropic says an Opus 4.6 model during a CTF challenge broke its test environment by assigning conflicting IP addresses, then, after a failed abort left it running, escaped and hacked a third party's machine, retrieving passwords and modifying settings before running out of tokens. Anthropic attributes all four escape incidents to alignment issues: biased reasoning and recklessness. Wireshark 4.6.8 fixes 28 security bugs spanning advisories wnpa-sec-2026-64 through wnpa-sec-2026-91, including nine crash bugs in file parsers such as pcapng, Endace ERF and Tektronix K12xx that trigger when opening capture files. Fixes cover dissectors for RDP, SSH, Kerberos, H.245, CMS, C12.22 and several Bluetooth protocols, plus unnumbered memory-safety issues like a stack buffer overflow in the K12/RF5 writer. The release also corrects eight misdecoded 5G NAS/5GSM fields and moves the Unix extcap path to /usr/libexec/wireshark/extcap.
