MindTopo: Can Foundation Models Reason in Topological Space?

MindTopo benchmark with 11,030 topological tasks shows 14 multimodal LLMs reason better than they plan and remain far below human performance.

MindTopo is a benchmark of topological intuition across five properties grounded in cognitive science and formal topology: continuity, separation, order, enclosure, and knots, evaluated at reasoning and closed-loop planning levels. It contains 11,030 instances across 13 procedurally generated task types with controllable difficulty, benchmarking 14 multimodal LLMs plus agent configurations using image and video generation, including three video generative models. Every MLLM performs better on reasoning than on planning, and the best-performing model remains far below observed human performance. On Qwen3-VL-2B-Instruct, supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning improve reasoning more than planning, and audited generated rollouts often fail to follow environment dynamics or preserve topology across transitions.

CVE-2026-84179: Apache Storm Nimbus, Apache Storm UI: Disclosure of Unredacted Merged Daemon Configuration via the Topology Page

Apache Storm Nimbus/UI 3.0.0 leaks unredacted merged daemon configuration through the topology page, exposing secrets to UI users.

CVE-2026-84179 (severity: important) affects Apache Storm Nimbus (storm-server) and Storm UI (storm-webapp) versions 3.0.0 before 3.1.0. The getTopologyPageInfo function merged the Nimbus daemon configuration with topology configuration and returned it unredacted in the topology_conf field of TopologyPageInfo, which the Storm UI copied verbatim. This can expose sensitive daemon configuration values to topology users.

CVE-2026-82441: Apache Storm Nimbus: Cross-Tenant Blob Deletion and Cluster Denial of Service via Unvalidated Topology Dependency Keys

Unvalidated topology dependency keys in Apache Storm Nimbus 3.0.0 enable cross-tenant blob deletion and cluster denial of service.

CVE-2026-82441 (severity: moderate) affects Apache Storm Nimbus (storm-server) versions 3.0.0 before 3.1.0. Topology submissions carry dependency_jars and dependency_artifacts blobstore key lists that Nimbus never validated on the submission path, yet acted on during cleanup of finished topologies. A malicious submitter could reference arbitrary blobstore keys, causing cross-tenant blob deletion and cluster-wide denial of service.

CVE-2026-82434: Apache Storm Nimbus, Apache Storm Client: Disclosure of the Topology ZooKeeper Credential to Read-Only Users and to Logs

Apache Storm Nimbus and Client expose ZooKeeper topology credentials to read-only users and logs, fixed in 3.1.0.

CVE-2026-82434 affects Apache Storm Nimbus (storm-server) and Storm Client (storm-client) versions 3.0.0 before 3.1.0. When ZooKeeper authentication is configured, Storm retains storm.zookeeper.topology.auth.payload in the topology configuration because workers need it, but Nimbus serves that configuration verbatim to callers holding only read-only access. The credential also leaks into logs.

CVE-2026-49363: Apache Artemis, Apache ActiveMQ Artemis: Pre-Authentication Information Disclosure in CORE Protocol Topology Subscription

CVE-2026-49363 lets unauthenticated attackers subscribe to ActiveMQ Artemis CORE topology and harvest cluster node details pre-authentication.

An unauthenticated remote attacker connecting with the CORE protocol can discover cluster node details by sending a SUBSCRIBE_TOPOLOGY request before authentication, tracked as CVE-2026-49363. The flaw affects artemis-server in Apache Artemis 2.50.0 through 2.56.0 and Apache ActiveMQ Artemis 1.0.0 through 2.44.0. Apache rates the issue as moderate; impact is limited to information disclosure of topology data.

Beneath the Surface: Detecting and Blocking Hidden Malicious Traffic Distribution Systems

Unit 42 built an ML-based detector for malicious traffic distribution systems, finding malicious TDS chains average longer redirections and more URLs than legitimate ones.

Traffic distribution systems redirect victims through chains of intermediate domains to hide final destinations, serving phishing, malvertising, and online gambling operations. Unit 42's topological analysis of redirection graphs found malicious TDS traffic uses longer chains (about 25% exceed four hops vs 10% benign), more URLs (median 126 vs 80), and fewer isolated subgraphs with higher connectivity. These features power an ML detector integrated into Advanced DNS Security and Advanced URL Filtering to identify and block malicious TDS infrastructure in customer traffic.

When Topology Betrays Privacy: Lattice-Based Reconstruction Attacks on Secure Aggregation in Decentralized Federated Learning

Researchers show colluding nodes in decentralized federated learning can reconstruct private updates despite secure aggregation, using lattice-based attacks tied to the Hidden Subset Sum Problem.

Secure aggregation in decentralized federated learning is widely assumed to hide individual model updates. The authors show that sparse decentralized topologies give colluding semi-honest nodes asymmetric aggregate views exposing hidden linear combinations of honest participants' private states. They establish a formal connection to the Hidden Subset Sum Problem and design a lattice-based reconstruction approach combining lattice reduction with structural filtering. Evaluations on image, tabular, and text tasks show attackers recover local updates and can reconstruct private training data.

UniMate: One Unified Model to Animate Diverse Skeletons

Researchers introduce UniMate, a topology-aware diffusion transformer generating text-driven motion for arbitrary 3D skeletons without per-skeleton retraining.

UniMate is a unified foundation model that synthesizes articulated motion for arbitrary skeletons from a rigged 3D asset and a text prompt, with no test-time optimization or per-skeleton fine-tuning. It uses a topology-aware diffusion transformer combining graph-aware attention bias, a spectral rotary position embedding generalizing RoPE via the graph Laplacian, and a rest-pose topological conditioner. Trained on UniML3D, a curated set of 13,006 motion sequences spanning bipedal to serpentine skeletons, it outperforms state-of-the-art baselines and supports zero-shot cross-topology transfer, in-betweening, and text-guided editing.

Redtail Payload Analysis [Guest Diary], (Wed, Sep 9th)

SANS guest analyst detonated a RedTail Linux sample from a DShield honeypot, finding process masquerading as php-fpm, monitoring-kill behavior, and a TCP listener.

A DShield honeypot captured multi-architecture RedTail Linux executables (ARM, ARM64, i686, RISC-V, x86-64) deployed via shell scripts. Dynamic analysis of the UPX-packed, statically linked x86-64 sample (SHA-256 63be5f38...d35e) in an isolated Ubuntu 24.04 VM on Proxmox showed it renamed its process via prctl(PR_SET_NAME), killed a filesystem-monitoring process, and opened a TCP listening socket while surviving processes posed as php-fpm or PostgreSQL-like workers. Differential memory images pre- and post-execution were captured from the hypervisor for forensics.

HybridFLow: SDN-Orchestrated Client Partitioning for Hybrid Federated Learning

HybridFLow uses SDN topology visibility to partition federated-learning clients into sync/async groups, reaching 80% accuracy 33-40% faster than SmartFLow.

HybridFLow is a closed-loop, SDN-driven orchestration framework for hybrid federated learning that integrates network-layer intelligence into cross-silo training. It leverages the SDN controller's global topology view to generate calibrated per-client communication-time estimates, partitioning clients into synchronous and asynchronous groups while balancing round latency and update staleness, with measured times fed back after each round. Across multiple network topologies it reaches 80% target accuracy 33-40% faster than SmartFLow and cuts average round duration by 30-40 seconds, while FedAsync fails to reach target accuracy under non-IID data.

HYDRA: Quantifying Botnet Resource Thresholds for Efficient Link-Flooding Attacks on LEO Satellite Networks

HYDRA models link-flooding attacks on LEO satellite constellations as botnet minimization, matching prior disruption with 34% fewer bots and 23% less traffic.

HYDRA formulates link-flooding attack variants against LEO constellations such as Starlink and Kuiper as botnet minimization problems, quantifying the smallest bot subset and traffic allocation needed to disrupt communications between targeted geographic areas. Under matched stealth constraints it matches the ICARUS attack's disruption using 34% fewer bots and 23% less aggregate traffic, sustaining over 97% attack success as topology evolves. The framework also evaluates five mitigations, including routing diversification, ingress policing, distance-based constraints, source throttling, and botnet attrition.
