Meta Failed to Catch Hundreds of AI Child Abuse Ads. Some Included Images of Real Kids

Meta's AI ad-detection failed to catch 350+ CSAM video ads on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, some depicting images of real children.

The Tech Transparency Project found over 250 additional ads containing child sexual abuse material on Meta platforms since August, on top of ~53 previously removed, exceeding 350 total since late last year. Some ads used images of real children, including a European royal family minor and teen influencers, morphed into graphic sexual videos via AI face-swapping. Ads linked to nudification apps from Chinese developers and reached over 29,000 EU accounts plus thousands in the US, UK, Australia, and India.

San Francisco Orders Meta to Stop ‘Allowing’ AI Child Abuse Ads

San Francisco's city attorney sent Meta a cease-and-desist over 350+ ads containing AI-generated child sexual abuse content, demanding remediation within 28 days.

San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu issued a cease-and-desist ordering Meta to stop 'allowing' paid ads with AI-generated child sexual abuse content and demanding answers within 28 days about moderation failures. Tech Transparency Project researchers found more than 350 ads that turned images of minors, some of real people including a European royal family member, into videos depicting sexual acts, directing users to AI nudify apps; the ads reached over 29,000 accounts across the EU, US, Australia and India. Meta says all ads have been removed, most had fewer than 200 impressions and total ad spend was under $5,000, and argues the ads ran outside the city attorney's jurisdiction.

“This is the AI men actually use”: Meta ads pushed apps nudifying real teens

TTP found Meta ran ads for AI nudify apps using real photos of minors, including a CSAM ad, drawing scrutiny from US and Australian regulators.

The Tech Transparency Project reported that Meta served ads for AI nudify apps using photos of real teens, which collectively reached over 29,000 people in the EU and 6,800 in the UK, with about 80% of ads shown in the US. A Facebook page posing as representing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ran a CSAM ad that Meta only disabled after TTP flagged it. Michigan and Florida attorneys general are investigating, Senator Mark Warner has demanded action, and Australia's eSafety regulator requested information from Meta at a senior level. Meta said flagged ads averaged fewer than 200 impressions with total spend under $5,000.

China-Based Artificial Intelligence Companies Conducting Industrial-Scale Distillation Campaigns Against U.S. AI Companies

NSA, CISA, and FBI warn DeepSeek, Alibaba, and other Chinese AI firms ran industrial-scale distillation of U.S. frontier models, threatening U.S. AI leadership.

A joint NSA, CISA, and FBI Cybersecurity Advisory (AA26-251A) says China-based firms DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun, and Z.AI extracted billions of tokens from U.S. frontier models including Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok, likely with Chinese government knowledge. Campaigns running since at least late 2024 used native APIs, cloud providers, third-party aggregators, gray-market proxy "transfer stations", and shared premium subscriptions to bypass geographic restrictions, evade safeguards, and violate providers' terms of use. The agencies recommend detecting anomalous prompts, accounts, and usage patterns; subtly altering responses to suspected distillers; and cross-organization intelligence sharing. They also call DeepSeek's publicly cited $5.6M training cost misleading because it excludes data acquired through distillation.

MantaxOtax Android Malware Combines Ransomware With Spyware

Zimperium analyzed MantaxOtax Android malware combining AES file encryption with extensive spying, linked to Indonesian actors and distributed via sideloading.

Zimperium's zLabs published a technical analysis of MantaxOtax, an Android malware family that combines ransomware-style file encryption with comprehensive spyware, linked to Indonesian threat actors and distributed via sideloaded APKs on a third-party file-sharing service. The malware requests device administrator, SMS, contacts, storage and Accessibility permissions, resolves its C2 domain dynamically from a GitHub repository, and encrypts files with AES using per-device keys derived from the Android ID on Android 9 and earlier. It steals WhatsApp messages, Telegram credentials, OTPs and other data, and uses MediaProjection for screenshots and screen recording staged on Catbox; a second variant adds WebSocket C2 with persistent screen locking and app blocking.

US Agencies Warn China Is Systematically Extracting Frontier AI Capabilities

NSA, CISA and FBI warn Chinese AI firms including DeepSeek and Moonshot systematically extracted billions of tokens from US frontier models since late 2024.

The NSA, CISA, and FBI report that China-based AI companies including DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun, and Z.AI extracted billions of tokens from US frontier models such as Claude, GPT-4/GPT-5, Gemini, and Grok 4 since late 2024. The distillation trained DeepSeek's R1 and V3 and Moonshot's Kimi-K2/K3 models, and the agencies mapped the tactics to MITRE ATLAS while noting additional novel techniques like subscription exploitation and request metadata sanitization. They describe the activity as a strategic economic threat to US technological leadership and recommend behavioral detection, differential privacy, and targeted cost-imposing responses.
