OpenAI says Iran, Russia used AI journalists, think tanks to influence Western media
OpenAI disrupted Russian and Iranian campaigns that used ChatGPT to plant AI personas and stories in mainstream media.
OpenAI said it shut down two influence operations from Russia and Iran that used ChatGPT and other AI tools to create fake journalists and covert think tanks. The Russian cluster, Dark Clark, ran the Social Research Center front, focused on harming Ukraine's image in Latin America, and spread fake audio tied to Ecuador and Bolivia that drew official denials. OpenAI rated it 5 out of 6 and called it the most complex front identity it has disrupted in two and a half years, without naming a Russian agency. A separate Iranian-linked effort used at least seven fake journalist personas to place nearly 100 articles on the U.S.-Iran war across about a dozen outlets and was rated 4 out of 6.
