Global Glacier Extinction Explorer
Glaciologists launched a Global Glacier Extinction Explorer projecting when individual glaciers worldwide will vanish under +1.5°C to +4.0°C warming scenarios.
A study by Van Tricht, Zekollari, and Huss published in Nature Climate Change defines glacier extinction as area below 0.01 km² or remaining volume below 1% of the initial value. The companion web tool combines three glacier models (GloGEM, OGGM, PyGEM) with multiple General Circulation Models and emission scenarios to estimate median extinction years with Q25/Q75 probability ranges. The application, built by K. Van Tricht with assistance from Claude Sonnet 4.6 and GPT-6 Astra, uses an open-source mapping stack (MapLibre GL JS, PMTiles, GeoPandas, GDAL) and draws on the Randolph Glacier Inventory v6.0, with results published on Zenodo.
