ByteDance launched Dramagic, sold through its BytePlus enterprise platform, to produce short dramas from script analysis and character creation through storyboarding and video previews, with multi-user collaboration and consistency checks. China’s Netcasting Services Association said about 128,000 short dramas were published in China in the first quarter of 2026, three times the prior full year, and that 95 percent were AI-generated. Tsinghua professor Shen Yang estimated one minute of AI video at $90 to $120, about a tenth of traditional production costs. The industry employs 690,000 people directly, while some performers are reportedly required to hand over voice and likeness before layoffs.
