Deno is joining Cloudflare
Deno is joining Cloudflare to make the open-source Workers runtime a first-class self-hosted platform.
Cloudflare announced that Deno is joining the company so Ryan Dahl and Bert Belder can make self-hosting the open-source Workers runtime, workerd, a supported way to run the Workers programming model. The production workerd runtime already exists, but its Durable Objects support is only single-instance; Deno's celld, released in August, implements Workers and Durable Objects for self-hosting and scale. Cloudflare says it open-sourced workerd after 2022 feedback from customers including Shopify and argues the Workers design differs for technical reasons rather than lock-in.
