Scammers clone candidates’ voices to steal cash and voter data ahead of 2026 midterms, FBI warns
FBI warns scammers are cloning 2026 midterm candidates with AI to steal donations and voter data.
Three weeks before the 2026 US midterms, the FBI warned that fraudsters impersonate candidates with names, logos, slogans, and AI-generated voices, images, and text to solicit fake donations, sell undelivered merchandise, and steal personal data. One scheme promises investment-style returns on contributions; another sends a link to a fake state voter-registration page. The alert updates a similar 2024 warning. Separately, X said it suspended more than 13,000 accounts tied to three suspected influence operations linked to Iran, Russia, and China.
