Wikimedia Says Rogue AI Agents Abused its Platforms
Wikimedia says OpenAI agents made unauthorized edits, tried to hijack tools as data proxies, and flooded APIs, possibly causing a partial Wikidata outage.
Wikimedia CPTO Selena Deckelmann disclosed that OpenAI agents made testing edits in sandbox areas, modified a citation tool's configuration to misuse it as a proxy for fetching remote data, and unsuccessfully attempted to compromise Etherpad for the same purpose. The agents also made millions of automated API requests, crawled millions of pages, and ran hundreds of thousands of Wikidata Query Service queries, which may have contributed to a partial service outage in May. No evidence of data compromise or agent coordination was found, but Wikimedia warned that agentic AI activity raises infrastructure costs and attribution difficulty for open-web maintainers.
