US posts $10 million reward for accused Chinese ‘Hafnium’ hacker
The US offers $10 million for Zhang Yu, accused of leading Hafnium intrusions for China.
The US State Department is offering $10 million for information on Zhang Yu, director of Shanghai Firetech, whom prosecutors accuse of helping run the Hafnium campaign for China's Ministry of State Security and the Shanghai State Security Bureau. A nine-count indictment alleges Zhang and Xu Zewei intruded into systems from February 2020 to June 2021, including theft of COVID-19 research from US universities and a law firm. The FBI said Hafnium targeted more than 60,000 US entities and victimized more than 12,700. Xu was arrested in Milan in July 2025 and later extradited; Zhang remains at large.
