Alibaba's Qwen AI team released Qwen-Image-2.1, an open-weight model for image generation and editing whose visual generation component has 7 billion parameters. The team claims it beats most closed models on its own benchmark, though independent evaluations are pending, and it runs on consumer GPUs such as the RTX 3090. The model natively handles RGBA transparent images, accepts up to ten reference images for tasks like group portraits and virtual try-ons, and uses architecture changes plus KV cache reuse to speed inference. It is available on Hugging Face, GitHub, and Model Scope under a research license that bars commercial use without a separate agreement.
