Cloudflare opened Monetization Gateway in closed beta so domain owners can charge AI agents for websites, APIs, MCP tools, or datasets. The gateway uses HTTP 402 Payment Required, with buyers authorizing payment inline and settlement through Coinbase's x402 Facilitator in USDC on the Base blockchain. Sellers write pricing rules that match URL, headers, or query parameters. U.S.-based Cloudflare customers can also pay for selected AI Gateway inference at request time using a Payment-Method: x402 header, with an example request to z-ai/glm-4.7-flash.

Unlike Pay Per Crawl, which charges for access, payment is tied to downstream use such as a cited answer or a review that shapes a recommendation. Publishers keep crawler controls, can leave a program, and may restrict model training in the terms.
