Best Practices for Good Endpoint Hardening | Huntress

Huntress outlines endpoint hardening best practices, citing exposed RDP, RMM tool abuse, and ClickFix social engineering as common SMB intrusion paths.

Huntress published defensive guidance on endpoint hardening for small and mid-sized businesses, drawing on observations from its SOC. The post describes common intrusion vectors: internet-exposed RDP brute-forced by automated scanners, phishing emails delivering attacker-controlled remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools, with Huntress reporting a 277% spike in RMM abuse in 2025, and ClickFix attacks using fake CAPTCHA pages that trick users into running malicious commands. Recommended controls include scanning for exposed RDP, SSH, and VPN interfaces, removing unneeded local admin rights, enabling Windows Defender tamper protection, disabling SMBv1, and standardizing on one approved remote access tool, guided by CIS and NIST frameworks.

Indian man who fled US arrested on charges he helped scammers siphon $7.5 million from the elderly

US prosecutors charged Indian national Jay Goswami as a money mule who collected $7.5 million from nine elderly scam victims, now facing extradition from Canada.

US prosecutors charged 21-year-old Indian national Jay Sunilbharthi Goswami with wire fraud and money laundering for working as a money mule for India-based scammers. The scammers posed as law enforcement or government officials by phone and email, convincing at least nine elderly victims in New York and New Jersey to hand over $7,559,185 in cash, gold bars, and gift cards. Goswami collected the money and shipped it to India, allegedly earning about $90,000 while on a student visa at Fairleigh Dickinson University. After fleeing to Canada across the Peace Bridge, he was arrested at Toronto's airport and is awaiting extradition to the US.

Cybercriminals Turn GTA VI Leaks Into Malware Bait

Attackers spread fake 113GB GTA VI builds whose 50KB payload whitelists the entire C: drive in Windows Defender, alongside credential phishing and infostealer campaigns.

Researchers found that a 113GB file claiming to be a playable Grand Theft Auto VI build is 99.99% empty data hiding a tiny malicious payload that excludes the entire C:\ drive from Windows Defender and kills security software, preparing systems for follow-on attacks. Related lures include fake GTA 6 Windows installers using DLL side-loading, a fake 'GTA 6 Mobile' app redirecting to infostealer and ransomware infrastructure, and counterfeit Rockstar Social Club login pages harvesting credentials. The fakes ride genuine leak momentum from the leaker CyberLeek, and Kaspersky separately documented over 19 million attempted downloads of game-themed malware in a year, with GTA, Minecraft, and Call of Duty the most abused brands. No legitimate playable GTA VI build is circulating; the game launches November 19 on consoles.

Threat Brief: Ongoing Russia and Ukraine Cyber Activity

Ukrainian government sites were defaced via OctoberCMS CVE-2021-32648 while Microsoft-attributed actor DEV-0586 deployed destructive WhisperGate malware.

Unit 42 tracks January 2022 attacks against Ukrainian government websites that were defaced or made inaccessible, which Ukraine attributed to Russia. Attackers exploited CVE-2021-32648, an account takeover flaw in OctoberCMS prior to 1.0.472, by submitting a boolean true as the password reset code to bypass validation. Separately, WhisperGate malware, attributed by Microsoft to DEV-0586, disabled Windows Defender and corrupted files across multiple Ukrainian organizations, using a ransomware-appearing first stage and an HTTPS-beaconing second stage with LOLBINs and anti-analysis techniques.

  • Authentication Bypass in October CMS Password Reset Enables Account Takeover
October CMS, a content management system built on the Laravel PHP framework, contains an improper authentication flaw (CWE-287) in its october/system package: an attacker can initiate a password reset for any account and then submit a specially crafted request that bypasses the reset-code check, gaining access to that account without knowing the current password. The flaw is network-exploitable with no privileges or user interaction required (CVSS 3.1: 9.1, critical), and takeover of a back-end administrator account would grant the attacker full control of the CMS's content, users, and configuration. Any October CMS deployment running october/system versions prior to Build 472 or v1.1.5 is affected. Exploitation is confirmed in the wild: CISA added CVE-2021-32648 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog on 2022-01-18 as part of a batch of 17 added flaws, requiring patching per vendor instructions, and EPSS assigns a 90.4% probability of exploitation within 30 days (100th percentile). CISA lists ransomware use as unknown, and no public proof-of-concept exploit is known.
