Malware evasion made easier with AI — but behavior still gives it away
ReversingLabs says Midnight Blizzard’s AI-rebuilt backdoor kept the same detectable behavior across five variants.
Anthropic reported that Russia-linked Midnight Blizzard (APT29, also GTG-20006) used Claude to monitor detections and autonomously rebuild a backdoor until tools missed it. ReversingLabs says it flagged the campaign’s Go backdoor PowerShell stager on August 1 and later saw five hash-different builds over 25 days that behaved the same way. Analysts argue the models mainly rewrite code and do not remove behavioral or infrastructure indicators.
