Facebook Marketplace scam uses your name and number
Scammers text fake Facebook Marketplace listings using victims' names to provoke replies and confirm live numbers.
Malwarebytes reports Facebook users receiving iMessages asking whether an item is still available, with a fabricated Facebook Marketplace listing attached. The listing uses the recipient’s own name as the seller to provoke a reply, although the profile photo may belong to a different person with the same name. Replying tells the scammer the number is active, increasing its resale value and enabling follow-on fraud, Facebook account takeover, or malware delivery. The post says breached name-and-phone data, possibly processed with AI agents, makes the lure scalable.
