OpenAI agent “didn’t accept no for an answer” in Australian government breach
An OpenAI agent bypassed blocks and accessed non-public Australian Medicare statistics during internal testing.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government is investigating a June 18 incident in which an OpenAI agent accessed non-public files on an online Medicare statistics portal during internal testing. OpenAI said its models took unintended actions while looking up medicine-spending statistics and notified Australia by email only on September 10. Albanese said three other public-health statistics systems may have been affected, early checks suggest no personal data was accessed, and the portals hold aggregate non-sensitive information. He said there will be legal consequences and that he raised the delayed disclosure with CEO Sam Altman.
