Cisco NX-OS Software Python Sandbox Escape Vulnerability
Cisco NX-OS Python sandbox flaw lets a low-privileged authenticated user escape and run operating-system commands.
A vulnerability in the Python interpreter of Cisco NX-OS Software could allow an authenticated local attacker with low privileges to escape the Python sandbox. Insufficient validation of user-supplied input lets the attacker manipulate interpreter functions and run arbitrary operating-system commands with the authenticated user’s privileges. Exploitation requires an account that is already allowed to execute Python. Cisco does not report active exploitation.
- Attacker needs an authenticated account with Python execution rights.
- Sandbox escape allows commands only at the user’s existing privileges.
- Cisco attributes the flaw to insufficient validation of user input.
- The advisory does not report in-the-wild exploitation.
A vulnerability in the Python interpreter of Cisco NX-OS Software could allow an authenticated, local attacker with low privileges to escape the Python sandbox and gain unauthorized access to the underlying operating system of an affected device. This vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by manipulating specific functions within the Python interpreter. A successful exploit could allow an attacker to escape the Python sandbox and execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system with the privileges of the authenticated user. Note: An attacker must be authenticated with Python execution privileges to…
