Actively Exploited V8 Turbofan Type Confusion in Google Chrome (CVE-2022-1364)

CVE-2022-1364 is a type confusion flaw (CWE-843) in the Turbofan JIT compiler of the V8 JavaScript engine, as shipped in Google Chrome. A remote attacker can trigger it by persuading a user to open a crafted HTML page, and successful exploitation can lead to heap corruption in the browser renderer. Per the CVSS vector, no privileges are required but user interaction is needed, with high potential impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Anyone running Google Chrome prior to 100.0.4896.127 — and, per CISA's designation, the affected Google Chromium V8 component — is exposed until patched. The bug was exploited as a zero-day in the wild (reported as the ninth actively exploited Chrome zero-day of 2022), was added to CISA's KEV catalog on 2022-04-15, and carries a 13.7% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days (96th EPSS percentile).

Do: Update Google Chrome immediately to 100.0.4896.127 or later on all platforms, as required by the vendor and by CISA's KEV required action. Organizations using Chromium-based browsers (Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, etc.) should verify their vendors have shipped the corresponding V8 fix rather than waiting on version numbers. Given exploitation via crafted web pages, scan endpoint inventories for Chrome versions below 100.0.4896.127 and prioritize user-facing fleets.

Local Privilege Escalation in VMware Workspace ONE Access, Identity Manager and vRA

VMware Workspace ONE Access, VMware Identity Manager and vRealize Automation virtual appliances contain a local privilege escalation flaw (CWE-250, execution with unnecessary privileges): support scripts shipped with the appliances have improperly set permissions and run with elevated privileges. An attacker who already has some form of local or shell access to an affected appliance can modify or abuse these scripts to execute code as root (per VMware's advisory), gaining full control of the appliance, its identity/directory data and a platform for persistence and pivoting. Organizations running these VMware identity- and cloud-automation appliances are affected, since the weakness is in the appliance software itself; risk is highest where the appliances are reachable or where this bug is chained with other recently disclosed VMware appliance vulnerabilities. The flaw is known exploited in the wild: it was added to CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2022-04-15, and EPSS assigns a high 35.8% probability of exploitation within 30 days (98th percentile), although no public PoC is known and ransomware use is unconfirmed.

Do: Apply the patched appliance releases per VMware's instructions, as required by CISA's KEV listing; until patched, restrict local, shell and management-plane access to Workspace ONE Access, Identity Manager and vRealize Automation appliances, and review them for unexpected root-level activity or modified support scripts. Treat this as actively exploited and prioritize patching alongside the other flaws fixed in the same VMware advisory.

Out-of-bounds Write Privilege Escalation in Microsoft Windows CLFS Driver

CVE-2022-24521 is an elevation-of-privilege flaw in the Windows Common Log File System (CLFS) driver, a kernel component, caused by an out-of-bounds write (CWE-787). A local attacker who already has limited privileges on an affected Windows machine can trigger the bug and gain elevated (SYSTEM/administrator) rights without any user interaction. Because the CLFS driver is part of the operating system, every user and service on an unpatched host is exposed to post-compromise escalation, which ransomware operators use to move from an initial foothold to full control. Affected products per the data include Windows 10 releases 1507, 1607, 1809, 1909, 20H2, 21H1, and 21H2, Windows 11 21H2, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Server 2008. The flaw was patched in Microsoft's April 2022 Patch Tuesday, added to CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2022-04-13, and is known to be used in ransomware campaigns, with public reporting tying exploitation to Cuba ransomware activity.

Do: Apply the April 2022 Microsoft security updates (Patch Tuesday, released April 12, 2022) to all affected Windows 10/11, Windows 7/8.1/RT 8.1, and Windows Server 2008 systems immediately, per the CISA KEV required action; note that Windows 7/8.1/RT 8.1 and Server 2008 may require Extended Security Updates to receive the fix. Because this is a local privilege escalation, prioritize hosts reachable for initial access, review endpoint telemetry for suspicious limited-user-to-SYSTEM activity, and watch for indicators associated with Cuba ransomware campaigns exploiting this flaw.

US CISA adds a VMware privilege escalation flaw and a Google Chrome type confusion issue to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) added a VMware privilege escalation flaw (CVE-2022-22960) and a Google Chrome type confusion issue (CVE-2022-1364) to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog.

According to Binding Operational Directive (BOD) 22-01: Reducing the Significant Risk of Known Exploited Vulnerabilities, FCEB agencies have to address the identified vulnerabilities by the due date to protect their networks against attacks exploiting the flaws in the catalog.

Experts recommend also private organizations review the Catalog and address the vulnerabilities in their infrastructure.

The VMware vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2022-22960, is a privilege escalation bug that was recently addressed by the virtualization giant.

The Google Chrome flaw, tracked as CVE-2022-1364, is a type confusion issue that was fixed by the IT giant with the release of Chrome 100.0.4896.127 for Windows, Mac, and Linux,

The CVE-2022-1364 zero-day resides in the V8 JavaScript engine that was reported by Clément Lecigne of Google’s Threat Analysis Group on April 13, 2022.
