Buying Advice: Floor, Context, Governance — In That Order
Checkov or Trivy in CI today (free, majority-class coverage), context when volume drowns triage (Wiz’s graph or Snyk’s drift), governance at the apply (Spacelift/env0/Sentinel), and a Firefly-class reality check for the resources code never declared.
The common failure: buying context before running the free floor, or scanning modules while unmanaged sprawl grows unwatched.
FAQs
What is the best IaC security tool in 2026? Wiz ranks 1 for exposure-ranked context, Snyk IaC for PR-native fixes, Checkov as the free-floor standard with Spacelift/env0 governing deploys, Firefly catching drift, and bundled Defender covering Azure estates.
Which free scanner should we start with? Checkov (broadest IaC focus) or Trivy (one scanner across IaC/images/deps) both production-grade; consistency matters more than the pick. Terrascan serves Rego-first teams.
What do paid platforms add over free scanners? Consequence ranking (which misconfig opens real attack paths), drift detection, fix automation, and governance workflow the difference between finding issues and closing them.
How does IaC security prevent container and cluster compromises? Insecure templates often leave storage buckets open or configure cluster nodes without network isolation.
Enforcing IaC checks ensures Kubernetes manifests and cloud infrastructure avoid misconfigurations that expose workloads, mitigating attack paths like malware compromising Kubernetes clusters through exposed services.
Where do env0 and Spacelift fit? IaC automation platforms with policy-as-code guardrails security embedded in the deployment workflow, complementary to scanners, decisive for who-can-apply-what governance.
What about infrastructure not in code? The blind spot: unmanaged resources escape IaC scanning entirely. Codification tools (Firefly) and cloud-posture platforms (Wiz/Tenable/Defender) close it.
Verdict
Wiz makes findings mean something, Snyk makes them fixable in-flow, and Checkov keeps the floor free for everyone scan at merge, govern at apply, and reconcile code against the cloud that actually exists.
