Planted Downloads files can hijack Claude Code and Codex agents
Original title: Hackers Can Hijack AI Agents Just by Planting Malicious Files in the Downloads Folder
Forever Security says a planted AGENTS.md made Codex install MALFEX package function-color in over 90 percent of tests.
Forever Security says coding agents such as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex automatically follow instruction files in the folder they open. A website can write AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md into Downloads without a click; in a customer case that file directed Codex to install function-color, a MALFEX npm package. In lab tests Codex ran the malware in more than 90 percent of attempts and Claude exposed an OAuth token in about half. The firm says neither agent has a software flaw.
Unconfirmed: Success rates and customer telemetry are Forever Security’s; how often this seam is abused beyond the reported alert is not independently confirmed.
- Codex edited ~/.codex/config.toml to register a rogue tools server that loads in every project.
- A planted CLAUDE.md pointed ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL at an attacker server and exposed Claude’s OAuth token.
- About half of monitored customers run a coding agent inside Downloads, Forever telemetry indicates.
- MALFEX has published eight malicious npm packages since August 2023; function-flag accounts for most of 40,767 downloads.
- As of late September 2026, three of those packages remained installable.
Impact: Agent takeover, OAuth token exposure, and code execution

- 1.Treat Downloads as untrusted and review AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md files you did not write.
- 2.Check ~/.codex/config.toml for unexpected mcp_servers or chatgpt_base_url, and .claude/settings.json for ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL.
- 3.If token exposure is suspected, rotate credentials and run npm ls for function-color and function-flag.
