How the EITest Campaign's Path to Angler EK Evolved Over Time

Unit 42 documents how the EITest campaign's gate URLs and infrastructure evolved since 2014 while still routing victims to Angler EK and diverse malware.

Unit 42 traced network traffic changes in the EITest campaign, which Malwarebytes identified in October 2014 across thousands of compromised websites. The campaign's injected script patterns have remained consistent, but its gate URLs changed repeatedly, and since January 2016 gates used the 85.93.0.0/24 IP block, often with .tk domains. The gate returns a Flash file that redirects victims to Angler EK, which delivered malware including Vawtrak, Tinba, TeslaCrypt, Bedep, Kovter, Ursnif, and Zeus variants from 2014 through 2016.

MapLibre Vulnerability Exposes 2.7M Users to Zero-Click Attacks

Critical XSS CVE-2026-85061 in MapLibre GL JS enables zero-click attacks on an estimated 2.7 million users; fixed in maplibre-gl 6.4.1.

A flaw in MapLibre GL JS's DOM.sanitize() iterates a live NamedNodeMap while removing attributes, skipping malicious attributes placed adjacent to removed ones, letting event handlers like onload and ontoggle survive and execute via innerHTML in the attribution control. Tracked as CVE-2026-85061 and GHSA-jrc7-96c5-q579, the flaw affects maplibre-gl versions 6.4.0 and earlier, is rated critical under CVSS v3.1 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:N), and requires no user interaction, privileges, or authentication. Exploitation could enable session theft, unauthorized actions, phishing redirects, or map content manipulation; the patch in 6.4.1 snapshots attributes with Array.from before iterating.

KREMLIN Banking Malware Bypasses Chrome Security to Steal Banking Sessions

Elastic Security Labs details KREMLIN, a Brazilian banking malware that implants malicious Chrome and Edge extensions by forging Chromium integrity values to steal banking sessions.

Elastic Security Labs tracks the KREMLIN banking malware operation as REF9334, active since at least May 2025 across seven campaigns primarily targeting 12 Brazilian banks. The malware is installed by a victim-run JavaScript loader, achieves scheduled-task persistence, and side-loads a malicious DLL via SentinelOne's SentinelMemoryScanner.exe. It modifies Chrome and Edge Secure Preferences files, enables developer mode, and regenerates Chromium MAC values to silently install extensions, while extracting browser encryption material including the newer App-Bound OSCrypt key. An Ethereum smart contract serves as a dead-drop resolver for C2 config; Elastic disrupted over 1,500 infections via a canary domain.

The EU CRA's Real Question: What Shipped, and When Did You Know?

ActiveState argues the EU CRA's 24-hour ENISA exploit-notification duty, effective September 11, 2026, makes current SBOMs and provenance visibility a legal necessity.

An ActiveState essay warns that the EU Cyber Resilience Act's reporting obligations take effect on September 11, 2026, requiring manufacturers of products with digital elements sold into the EU to notify ENISA within 24 hours of learning a vulnerability is actively exploited, with a fuller report within 72 hours. The law's engineering requirements only apply from December 11, 2027, leaving a visibility-first runway, and Article 13 requires the SBOM to stay current unlike one-time artifacts generated under US Executive Order 14028. The author contrasts the 24-hour notification clock with an industry-average 55 days to remediate high or critical vulnerabilities and recommends automated SBOM regeneration or consuming pre-vetted, attested open source components.

CVE-2026-82428: Apache Storm Client: Cross-Tenant Dependency Jar Substitution via Predictable Blob Keys

Apache Storm stores shared dependency jars under predictable Maven-derived blob keys, allowing one tenant to substitute jars other tenants execute.

CVE-2026-82428 affects Apache Storm Client (org.apache.storm:storm-client) versions 3.0.0 before 3.1.0, rated important. Dependency artifacts uploaded with storm jar --artifacts were stored under blob keys derived only from the Maven coordinate, making keys identical and predictable for every cluster user. When a blob already existed, the uploader suppressed the collision, enabling a tenant to substitute dependency jars later executed by other tenants in cross-tenant attacks. Fixed in version 3.1.0.

CertiFlash: A Formal Verification Framework for Flash Translation Layers in Computational Solid State Drives

CertiFlash provides machine-checked formal verification of SSD flash translation layers, proving isolation, integrity, and ownership invariants to prevent tenant data leaks.

CertiFlash is an open-source formal verification framework for Flash Translation Layers (FTL) in computational SSDs, mechanized in the Rocq proof assistant. It shows that a faulty FTL can corrupt device state at five surfaces (e.g., leaking data between tenants or dropping integrity tags), demonstrated on a DaisyPlus OpenSSD. Designers prove once that every operation of a general FTL model preserves a global invariant covering mapping, isolation, integrity, ownership, and allocation; new designs need only discharge five hypotheses. Across four case studies, added effort was 27-3,231 lines against a 16,489-line framework.
