CISA Shares 17 Techniques Used by Hackers to Compromise Active Directory

CISA and five international agencies publish joint guidance detailing 17 techniques attackers use to compromise Microsoft Active Directory environments.

CISA, NSA, and the Australian Signals Directorate's ACSC, with contributions from Canadian, UK, and New Zealand cyber centers, released technical guidance on 17 Active Directory attack techniques. It covers AD Domain Services, AD Certificate Services, and AD Federation Services, including Kerberoasting, DCSync, Golden Ticket, Golden SAML, Skeleton Key, and Shadow Credentials. The guidance recommends treating domain controllers, CAs, AD FS servers, and Entra Connect systems as Tier 0 assets with phishing-resistant MFA, Kerberos pre-authentication enforcement, and disabling NTLM/SMBv1.

Slovakia Warns of Cyber Risks in Road Speed Cameras

Slovakia's NBÚ warns that speed camera systems from SODASUS, Simicon and NEROline pose cyber risks including undocumented remote access.

Slovakia's National Security Authority (NBÚ) warned of a significant cyber threat tied to several road speed camera products: NERO R-ONE units sold by Cyprus-based SODASUS, and Cordon-series cameras made by Russia's Simicon and sold by Croatia's NEROline. A security analysis requested by the Interior Ministry found weak protections, mismatches between documented and actual communication settings and software versions, unclear hardware/software provenance, and pre-configured remote-access mechanisms outside operator control. NBÚ warned that compromised cameras could expose vehicle and licence-plate data, tamper with records, or serve as a foothold into public-sector networks lacking segmentation. The Interior Ministry reportedly removed the units from its pilot deployment and asked the supplier to replace them with equipment meeting Slovak and EU security requirements.

It cites an incident in which foreign actors forged tokens with a stolen commercial signing key to steal more than 60,000 emails from one government agency. It also recommends extending token protections to AI agents and preparing identity systems for a future post-quantum cryptography transition.

CISA and NIST Release Technical Checklist for Safeguarding Identity Tokens From Theft and Misuse

CISA and NIST published NIST IR 8587, final guidance for protecting identity tokens from forgery, theft, replay, and signing-key compromise.

NIST Interagency Report 8587 (September 15, 2026) expands the IA-13 'Identity Providers and Authorization Servers' control from NIST SP 800-53 R5.1.1, guiding federal agencies and cloud providers on SSO, identity federation, and machine-to-machine authentication. It requires hardware-backed signing-key storage for moderate-impact systems, 90-day key rotation for high-impact systems, token lifetimes under one hour, and sender-constrained mechanisms such as mutual TLS and DPoP. The report cites incidents including forged SAML assertions that exposed over 60,000 emails from a federal agency. It also extends guidance to agentic AI systems using signed tokens and urges post-quantum cryptography migration planning.

CISA advisory reveals unauthenticated privileged API access and arbitrary SMS sending in mySCADA myPRO Manager <=2.1, CVSS 9.8.

CISA advisory ICSA-26-258-03 discloses two vulnerabilities in mySCADA myPRO Manager <=2.1 with aggregate CVSS v3 of 9.8. CVE-2026-73807 (CVSS 9.8) lets unauthenticated network attackers access privileged management functions via the command API, while CVE-2026-82567 exposes an unauthenticated HTTP endpoint that sends arbitrary SMS messages through a connected GSM modem. Deployments span critical manufacturing, energy, food and agriculture, transportation, and water and wastewater sectors. CISA states no known public exploitation has been reported at this time.

ENISA's July 2026 paper 'ENISA's view on Cybersecurity in the Frontier AI Era' argues AI-assisted attackers may weaponize vulnerabilities within 15 minutes of disclosure and achieve initial-access-to-data-exfiltration in a median 72 minutes, creating a 'negative time-to-exploit' problem. The report cites one organisation whose CVE volume rose from roughly 80 in Q1 2025 to almost 500 in Q1 2026, then about 500 reports per day when frontier-AI tools were used. ENISA recommends machine-speed defence under 'Cybersecurity as Code', EPSS and VEX-based prioritisation, AI-assisted incident response with human oversight, and an assume-breached architecture.

ST Engineering iDirect iQ-Series Terminals (Update A)

CISA advisory details four flaws in ST Engineering iDirect iQ-Series VSAT terminals <=4.5.2.1, enabling device data theft, CSRF-driven reboots, and local privilege escalation.

CISA's Update A to ICSA-26-183-01 covers ST Engineering iDirect iQ-Series, 3315-Series and 9-Series terminals at firmware <=4.5.2.1, deployed across communications, defense, energy and transportation. CVE-2026-38059 exposes unauthenticated /api/identity and /api/ endpoints leaking serial number, DID, TPK, MAC address and firmware version, potentially enabling terminal impersonation; CVE-2026-38057 is a CSRF flaw letting an attacker force terminal reboots and satellite link loss via /api/reboot. CVE-2026-38056 enables local privilege escalation using the factory-configured technician account (CVSS 3.1 8.8, CVSS 4.0 9.4), and CVE-2026-38058 exposes crackable MD5-crypt root password hashes. All four flaws were reported to CISA by Ahmed Alqahtani of Aramco.

CISA advisory details four flaws in AVEVA Pipeline Integrity Monitor <=2025_SP1_P1, allowing information disclosure, weak-hash admin elevation, and cross-site scripting.

CISA published ICSA-26-253-01 covering AVEVA Pipeline Integrity Monitor versions <=2025_SP1_P1_build_7.1.9580.8513. CVE-2026-81821 (hard-coded cryptographic key, CWE-321) lets a user with read access decrypt PIMBoards project files, and CVE-2026-81822 (CWE-327) allows brute-forcing weak password hashes to elevate to PIMBoards administrator; both score 8.4 HIGH (CVSS v3.1). CVE-2026-81823 (CWE-862) permits unauthenticated read operations, and CVE-2026-81824 (CWE-79) enables arbitrary JavaScript execution via socially engineered links. CISA reports no known public exploitation and recommends limiting network exposure of control system devices.

China-Based Artificial Intelligence Companies Conducting Industrial-Scale Distillation Campaigns Against U.S. AI Companies

NSA, CISA, and FBI warn DeepSeek, Alibaba, and other Chinese AI firms ran industrial-scale distillation of U.S. frontier models, threatening U.S. AI leadership.

A joint NSA, CISA, and FBI Cybersecurity Advisory (AA26-251A) says China-based firms DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun, and Z.AI extracted billions of tokens from U.S. frontier models including Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok, likely with Chinese government knowledge. Campaigns running since at least late 2024 used native APIs, cloud providers, third-party aggregators, gray-market proxy "transfer stations", and shared premium subscriptions to bypass geographic restrictions, evade safeguards, and violate providers' terms of use. The agencies recommend detecting anomalous prompts, accounts, and usage patterns; subtly altering responses to suspected distillers; and cross-organization intelligence sharing. They also call DeepSeek's publicly cited $5.6M training cost misleading because it excludes data acquired through distillation.

AWS Certificate Manager sets 2027 end date for email-validated certificate renewals

AWS Certificate Manager will phase out email validation for public certificates during 2027, requiring migration to DNS validation before September 30, 2027.

AWS Certificate Manager will stop offering email validation in new Regions on January 1, 2027, discontinue it for new certificate requests on March 31, 2027, and stop renewing email-validated certificates on September 30, 2027. This precedes the CA/Browser Forum's March 15, 2028 deadline ending email-based domain validation for publicly trusted certificates. AWS is updating the UpdateCertificateOptions API so customers can switch to DNS validation in place while retaining the certificate ARN, with Route 53 support for creating required CNAME records.
