Dreaming the Sound of Contact: Leveraging Video and Audio Generation for Zero-Shot Force-Aware Manipulation and Data Generation

Pipeline pairs generated video with audio-derived force profiles to enable zero-shot, force-aware robot manipulation on Franka Panda for contact-rich tasks.

The paper leverages generated video and audio jointly: loudness of generated contact sounds shapes a bounded, time-varying desired-force profile from a natural-language task prompt. Trajectories execute on a Franka Panda robot with a closed-loop force regulator tracking the audio-shaped profile, succeeding where a kinematic-only baseline fails. The pipeline also serves as a data generation engine to train closed-loop manipulation policies.

Structured Claim-Level Discourse Representations for Dense Health Narratives

Researchers propose a claim-level discourse framework for health videos, finding 13.22 atomic claims per minute and that LLMs struggle with pragmatic profiling.

The paper introduces a structured framework for claim-level discourse analysis in dense health narratives on social media videos, modeling tuples that link atomic claims with thematic aspects, stance, and multidimensional pragmatic attributes. Analysis found an average of 13.22 atomic claims per minute in health video discourse. A benchmark spanning four health domains with 1,191 manually annotated claims from 60 videos shows current LLMs perform strongly on thematic categorization and stance prediction but struggle with high-dimensional pragmatic profiling, suggesting future systems need task decomposition and specialized inference strategies.

When LLM judges agree, should we believe them?

Amazon ICML paper uses Ising models to correct correlated LLM-judge votes, beating accuracy-weighted panels by 9-14%.

Amazon Science describes an ICML paper, "Dependence-aware label aggregation for LLM-as-a-judge via Ising models," addressing how correlated judge outputs inflate majority-vote confidence. The unsupervised method models pairwise dependence between judges, learning both reliability and similarity without human reference labels. Tested on relevance, toxicity, and summarization tasks with 10 judge models at temperature zero, it outperformed accuracy-weighted voting by 9% to 14%.

Training Specialist Models without Reasoning Trajectories for Domain Expert Distillation

Study shows specialists trained on question-answer pairs implicitly select latent reasoning trajectories, and tuning choices control the precision-generalization trade-off in distillation.

The work demonstrates that specialist optimization implicitly selects from a latent trajectory space when specialists are trained only on question-answer pairs without explicit reasoning supervision. Using student distillation as an agnostic probe across 27 specialist-student pairings, specialization-generalization profiles correlate exceptionally strongly. Explicitly controlling the specialist's distributional drift systematically shifts both teacher and distilled student along a controllable trade-off between domain precision and general-capability retention across chemistry, physics, and multilingual settings, even across divergent model families.

Model-Aware Schedules Improve Generation via Fiberwise Optimal Transport

Researchers introduce model-aware diffusion schedules via fiberwise optimal transport, cutting flow-matching FID on CIFAR-10 by 38.6% at 16 function evaluations.

The paper proposes constructing diffusion and flow-matching sampling schedules from a fiberwise prediction risk defined via optimal transport, combined with coefficient-path kinetic action, yielding a closed-form time allocation. Across DDPM and flow-matching experiments spanning targets, datasets, and architectures, the schedules beat model-agnostic baselines, including a 38.6% relative FID reduction for flow matching on CIFAR-10 at 16 function evaluations. Normalized fiberwise-risk profiles from independently trained models align closely, suggesting empirical universality, and a frozen analytic allocation template retains most of the gains.

GeoAAC: Geometry-Based Adaptive Action Chunking from Denoising Trajectories in VLA Policies

GeoAAC adaptively sizes action chunking horizons in flow-based VLA policies using denoising trajectory geometry, raising real-world manipulation success from 53.3% to 74.4%.

GeoAAC exploits geometric variation across action prefixes in flow-matching denoising trajectories as a process-level signal of prediction reliability. It constructs a horizon-wise geometric profile and adaptively determines the action horizon from a single generation without additional training. Experiments with GR00T N1.5 and π0.5 on LIBERO, LIBERO-Pro, and RoboCasa365 show gains up to 8.7 percentage points over fixed-horizon and adaptive baselines, with real-world success rate rising from 53.3% to 74.4%.

What Does Privileged Information Add to On-Policy Self-Distillation?

Study of on-policy self-distillation on 5,319 AMPLE-Math problems finds reference-free distillation drives most gains, with modest extra benefit from privileged references.

The authors build AMPLE-Math, a suite of 5,319 mathematical problems with six reasoning views sharing the same answers, to isolate the value of privileged references in on-policy self-distillation. With a thinking-enabled teacher supervising direct-response rollouts, reference-free distillation accounts for most of Qwen3-1.7B's improvement in domain and on external benchmarks; extra reference benefit is modest, strongest for polished solutions, while complete traces add two percentage points for SmolLM3-3B at step 50. Gains reverse when short direct-response rollouts are replaced with long thinking-enabled rollouts. The findings suggest OPSD improves access to existing reasoning capabilities via cross-mode parameter sharing, with references valued for what they add to that transfer.

Evidence-Grounded Agentic Formulation Development in an Autonomous Laboratory

Andromeda 2, an agentic laboratory system, reaches a 50% high-performance hit rate for paclitaxel SEDDS formulations versus 17% for its predecessor and 2% for DoE.

Andromeda 2 is an agentic system that reasons over structured in-house experimental evidence and invokes computational and experimental tools to design and execute successive formulation batches for self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS). For paclitaxel it achieved a 50% high-performance hit rate versus 17% for Andromeda 1 and 2% for a wet-lab DoE campaign, identifying 12 formulations meeting all four target product profile objectives versus 6 and 0. A selected full-TPP formulation reached approximately 19% w/w apparent paclitaxel loading, about 3.3-fold higher than a published paclitaxel S-SEDDS, and an ablation showed structured evidence access increased mean AUC by 34%.

Can Skills Learned in Games Transfer to Real-World Work?

Good Start Labs trains models in strategy games like 1830 and Diplomacy, showing terminal-agent training transfers to financial research benchmarks.

Good Start Labs, spun out of Every with $3.6M from General Catalyst and Inovia, trains AI models in verifiable strategy games. A 30B model trained as a multi-turn terminal agent in 1830: The Game of Railroads and Robber Barons improved Finance-Agent benchmark performance, while single-turn QA training did not transfer. The founders also co-authored COS-PLAY, a paper on co-evolving LLM decision and skill-bank agents for long-horizon tasks.

Coding Agents Have Converged: Why the SWE-bench Leaderboard Can No Longer Order Its Top Entries, and What to Measure Instead

Audit of 254 SWE-bench submissions finds top coding-agent entries statistically inseparable, so small leaderboard gaps no longer establish rank.

The paper audits 254 SWE-bench submissions across four splits without running models. On Verified, the top two entries each resolve 396 of 500 instances, and exact paired McNemar tests separate none of the 29 adjacent top-thirty pairs at alpha=0.05. Within-model scaffold score ranges reach 29.8 percentage points, versus an 8.8-point spread among the top thirty. The authors release a five-step audit protocol and recommend reporting comparison-set-specific resolution and model-scaffold provenance.

Convergent Emergence of In-Context Learning Across Modalities

Controlled experiments show few-shot in-context learning emerges across six modalities including language, genomes, images, and proteins, partially supporting a convergence hypothesis.

The paper tests the Convergent Emergence Hypothesis: that few-shot in-context learning, when it emerges, shares a common cross-modality difficulty profile. A controlled framework instantiated the same task suite across six modalities: language, genome, integer sequences, time series, images, and proteins. Paired-mapping ICL emerged in all six modalities, surpassed controlled baselines, and showed correlated per-task effects in five of them, providing partial support for the hypothesis.

3D Point Splatting for mmWave Radar Novel View Synthesis

Researchers propose 3DPS, a differentiable point renderer for mmWave radar novel view synthesis that outperforms optical-NVS baselines by 1.7x-5.2x.

The paper introduces 3D Point Splatting (3DPS), the first differentiable point renderer for radar, derived from the solid-angle form of the radar equation with ITU-R P.2040 material models and complex phasor splatting. On six outdoor ColoRadar scenes it reaches 0.587 mean Pearson correlation on held-out range-azimuth images, between 1.7x and 5.2x the RadarSplat, Radar Fields, and DART baselines. The same optimized scene produces ADC, complex range profile, and RA outputs via standard FFT pipelines, and training takes about 3 minutes per scene on an RTX 4090.

From Parameters to Answers: How LLMs Retrieve and Use Their Internal Knowledge

Interpretability study traces how Qwen, Llama, and Gemma route query information and internal knowledge across layers when answering questions.

Researchers used layerwise interventions on hidden states to separate query-routing signals from target knowledge in language models, testing Qwen, Llama, and Gemma on country-continent questions with varied answer types. A pair-conditioned request direction strengthens before interventions alter downstream knowledge, opening a causal window while answer-supporting content is still forming. Trajectories differ by model: Gemma shows a partially overlapping mid-layer routing profile, while Llama has no sustained routing-effect window under the same gates.

Likelihood-free inference with nuisance parameters through normalizing flows

Researchers decompose normalizing flows to derive near-pivotal statistics for likelihood-free inference with nuisance parameters, recovering the t-test and beating Welch limits.

A new paper decomposes neural-network normalizing flows to uncover pivotal statistics in the presence of nuisance parameters using only a sample generator from the distribution of interest. The statistic is near-pivotal in the sense of minimum average KL-divergence of its p-values and can incorporate prior knowledge of group invariances such as translation and scale. Experiments show it recovers the one-sample t-test almost exactly, outperforms the Welch test on worst-case size over a constrained variance-ratio range, and delivers higher power and much faster runtime than profile likelihood-ratio techniques on small-to-moderate samples.

Characterizing Language Generation in the Limit: Finite Witnesses and a Separation-Width Hierarch

New work characterizes language generation in the limit via finite witnesses, proves a full separation-width hierarchy, and formalizes all results in Lean.

The paper fully characterizes when language generation in the limit is possible for arbitrary families over a countable universe: each target must admit a finite positive witness such that targets activated by any finite sample share an infinite common intersection. It defines positive separation width and proves every level of the resulting hierarchy occurs, with countable families admitting singleton witnesses and unions of families with infinite common cores requiring unbounded finite witnesses. The characterization, a universal normalization, and a diagonal capture lemma are machine-checked in the Lean proof assistant, with the development maintained on GitHub.

FlowBalance: Verifier-Grounded Self-Improvement from On-Policy Reasoning Experience

FlowBalance is a verifier-grounded self-improvement method that beats FlowRL on Qwen3-4B and Qwen3-8B math reasoning while improving training stability.

FlowBalance calibrates dense self-guidance scores with verifier-derived group advantages: guidance is retained on positive-advantage trajectories, reversed on negative-advantage trajectories, and disabled when rollout groups show no outcome preference. The method exponentially reweights a reference policy via trajectory balance, with guarantees including within-group contrast preservation and a minimum-change reverse-KL characterization. On mathematical reasoning it outperforms FlowRL on Qwen3-4B and Qwen3-8B, trains faster and more stably, avoids direct OPSD's response-length collapse, and shows higher correct-strategy diversity on AIME24.

Import AI 470: No rights for machines; automating environment generation with SPADE; and building better GPU kernels with Hawkeye

METR analysis finds AI accelerating cyber vulnerability discovery, while SPADE self-play environment generation improves Qwen3 reasoning benchmark scores at 30B scale.

Import AI 470 discusses a METR research note reporting differential acceleration from AI: major acceleration in reported cyber vulnerabilities (cURL, OpenSSL, Firefox, Microsoft, NVD, OSV), minor acceleration in mathematics, and no measurable acceleration in AI-research optimization benchmarks. It also covers SPADE, a self-play framework from a multi-university team (University of Washington, Stanford, MIT, CMU, and others) that co-evolves executable training environments and agent capability using Environment Designer and Reasoning Agent roles with hint-based regret rewards. Trained on Qwen3-4B-Instruct-2507, Qwen3-8B, and Qwen3-30B-A3B-Instruct-2507 via GRPO (400 rollouts of 25 environments), SPADE lifted the 30B-A3B game-environment suite average to 58.3, +8.1 over base, and improved tool-use results across backbones. The issue also references Hawkeye for building better GPU kernels.
