X's Algorithm Feeds Off Ragebait and Impacts Democrats More, Study Finds

A PNAS study of 715 X users finds the platform's engagement-optimizing algorithm amplifies value-misaligned ragebait, affecting self-identified Democrats more.

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences used browser extension data from 715 U.S. X users, recruited in September and October 2024, to compare self-reported values with the content the For You feed amplified. It found that replying to posts—only 6.8% of observed interactions—disproportionately shapes the engagement-optimizing algorithm, creating runaway feedback loops of value-misaligned ragebait that were more pronounced for self-identified Democrats. Co-author Ziv Epstein, a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University, said the observational work is intended to spur debate on algorithm transparency and user control over feeds.

Subtlefakes: Slightly Altered Nonconsensual AI Images Are Taking Over X

404 Media documents 'subtlefakes' — near-realistic AI-edited nonconsensual celebrity images on X spread by engagement-farming accounts, including images of actor Xochitl Gomez.

The article describes a rising trend of 'subtlefakes': AI-generated or lightly edited images of celebrities made more revealing or provocative without nudity, posted by verified engagement-farming accounts that earn revenue from X's impressions-based payouts. Actor Xochitl Gomez shared side-by-side comparisons showing real parking-lot and red-carpet photos altered into suggestive poses. The author argues these images are hard to detect and moderate because they avoid nudity, bypassing guardrails in mainstream generators, and notes some were made with X's own Grok.

MemSentry: A Framework for Detecting Persistent Memory Poisoning in Agentic AI

MemSentry intercepts persistent-memory writes in agentic AI to catch memory poisoning, reaching 91.7% accuracy with SBERT+LR classification.

Memory poisoning lets adversaries plant crafted content in an agent's long-term memory to suppress security alerts, enable privilege escalation, or override policies without modifying model weights or system prompts. The paper presents MemSentry, a configuration-driven framework that evaluates proposed persistent-memory writes on source trust, semantic risk, attack radius over a dependency DAG, access risk, and a signed security-state delta to issue deterministic Accept, Review, or Quarantine decisions. Across 1,000 GPT-4-generated scenarios on a 20-asset dependency DAG, SBERT+LR achieved 91.7% accuracy and 0.908 macro-F1, all four classifiers detected 100% of external quarantine-class threats, and verified-insider writes are escalated for human review rather than auto-quarantined.

OpenAI Bans Russian ChatGPT Accounts Used to Run Influence Operation

OpenAI banned Russian-operated ChatGPT accounts that generated social media content promoting the International Burke Institute influence operation.

OpenAI disrupted a cluster of ChatGPT accounts using VPNs to generate posts and comments on Substack, Telegram, X, Facebook and LinkedIn promoting the International Burke Institute, a self-described expert community registered in February 2025. The operation republished academic work with misattributed sources and promoted a 'Sovereignty Index' scoring nations 100-700 points, casting Russia favorably. Telegram channels drew roughly 10-20,000 followers each, and operators instructed ChatGPT to conceal linguistic clues of Russian origin. OpenAI says the campaign is distinct from documented Russia-linked influence operations and illustrates how AI can support manufacturing of authority.

Flirty OnlyFans promoters on X may be using AI to appear human

Developer Álvaro Martínez Majado found OnlyFans-promoting accounts on X following rigid scripts yet handling encoded instructions, suggesting generative AI use.

Investigation of flirty X accounts promoting OnlyFans pages showed near-identical openers across accounts plus dynamic behaviors: answering a hexadecimal-encoded instruction with "Pineapple" and failing an exact 12-character count test in an LLM-like pattern. The accounts also sent personalized voice notes reading supplied timestamps and usernames, consistent with automated text-to-speech. Evidence suggests a hybrid scripted/AI system, though no model, provider, or operator was identified.

The Race to Control AI and Protect What Makes Us Human

Opinion piece surveys the AI existential-risk debate, citing Bill Gates' memo and Anthropic's Evan Hubinger on unsolved superintelligence alignment.

A SecurityWeek opinion piece debates whether AI will be a force for good, anchored on Bill Gates' 6,000-word August 2026 memo warning of a turbulent, under-prepared AI transition. Anthropic alignment lead Evan Hubinger stated he believes there is a greater than 10% chance AI kills all humans within a decade and that no plan exists to solve superintelligence alignment. The piece also notes OpenAI reportedly slowed parts of model development over safety concerns and Gates' warning that heavy AI use is associated with reduced critical thinking.

Bad Likert Judge: A Novel Multi-Turn Technique to Jailbreak LLMs by Misusing Their Evaluation Capability

Unit 42 details the Bad Likert Judge multi-turn jailbreak that abuses LLMs' evaluation capability, raising attack success rates over 60% across six frontier models.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 describes the Bad Likert Judge technique, a multi-turn jailbreak that asks a target LLM to act as a Likert-scale judge scoring the harmfulness of example responses. The highest-rated example in each scale can carry harmful content, bypassing the model's internal guardrails. Testing across six state-of-the-art text-generation LLMs showed an average attack success rate increase of more than 60% versus plain attack prompts, with tested models anonymized. The technique targets edge cases rather than typical use, and the article positions the work as guidance for defenders on potential jailbreak risks.

[AINews] AEF-1 standard emerges for Third Party Evaluators, as Xai, OpenAI, and Anthropic all cosign

xAI, OpenAI, and Anthropic cosign the AEF-1 third-party evaluation standard while Dario Amodei proposes embedded evaluators for safety verification.

The AI Evaluator Forum published AEF-1, a baseline standard for independent third-party AI evaluations covering access, conflicts of interest, funding relationships, recusal, and transparency, cosigned by xAI, OpenAI, and Anthropic. Dario Amodei wrote a rare personal blogpost proposing embedded evaluators such as METR with desks, badges, company laptops, and internal-risk-team-level access to verify safety commitments, plus democratic and global coordination frameworks. The roundup also covers the pacing debate: Bilal Chughtai left Google DeepMind arguing progress may outrun alignment, while critics including Aidan Gomez and Cohere push back against slowdowns and lab gatekeeping. Additional items include Cline Desktop's launch with open-weight model support.
