PaperCut Zero-Day Under Active Attack: Emergency Patch Released

PaperCut warns that a zero-day in NG and MF print management products is being actively exploited, shipping emergency patches with no CVE assigned yet.

PaperCut Software confirmed active exploitation of a zero-day affecting PaperCut NG and MF, with confirmed customer incidents, and released emergency patches on Friday ahead of technical details or a CVE assignment. The company urges customers to restrict web access to trusted IP addresses, disconnect application servers from the internet, and watch for indicators including tampered or truncated server.log files, database error strings, and suspicious activity involving pc-app.exe. The article recalls the May 2023 exploitation of CVE-2023-27350 and CVE-2023-27351 by the financially motivated Lace Tempest group, a Clop ransomware RaaS affiliate, though no attacker attribution has been given for the current campaign.

PaperCut Zero-Day Exploited in Attacks, Affecting All NG and MF Versions

PaperCut warns of actively exploited zero-day RCE chain CVE-2026-81578 and CVE-2026-82078 affecting all PaperCut NG and MF versions.

PaperCut alerted customers that attackers are actively exploiting a zero-day affecting all versions of PaperCut NG and MF print management software, with confirmed customer incidents and an ongoing investigation. Emergency patches were released for v25 and v26, and the flaw was later identified as an exploitation chain of CVE-2026-81578 and CVE-2026-82078 enabling remote code execution. Shared IoCs include suspicious post-exploitation activity from pc-app.exe and missing, truncated or deleted server.log files with specific database errors. Users with internet-exposed PaperCut Application Servers are urged to immediately restrict access to trusted IPs; in 2023, CVE-2023-27350 (CVSS 9.8) in the same products was exploited by Lace Tempest to deliver Cl0p and LockBit ransomware.

Mitsubishi Electric CC-Link IE TSN Communication Protocol (Update A)

CISA updated its CC-Link IE TSN advisory: segment-attached attackers can tamper with Mitsubishi Electric control data and trigger denial of service conditions.

CISA updated its advisory (ICSA-26-211-07 Update A) on a CWE-924 improper enforcement of message integrity flaw in the Mitsubishi Electric CC-Link IE TSN communication protocol. An attacker on the same network segment can send specially crafted packets under specific timing conditions to tamper with control input and output values, causing incorrect operation or denial of service in affected products. Affected products span numerous models, including MELSEC MX controllers, RJ71GN11 modules, motion modules (RD78G/LD78G), FX5 units, and NZ2GN block-type remote modules.

Lightning Weave: Improving the Accuracy-Efficiency Frontier of Reasoning Models through Capability Composition

Lightning Weave composes capabilities from independently post-trained models via on-policy distillation, improving Qwen3.5-4B reasoning accuracy while cutting tokens.

Lightning Weave is a post-training framework that merges accuracy and efficiency capabilities from independently post-trained specialist models into a single student via on-policy distillation. Each capability is represented as a policy shift, combined via aligned log-ratio shifts and Tilted-Target DOPD, enabling training without serving multiple live anchor models concurrently. On Qwen3.5-4B, it raises HMMT 2025 accuracy from 59.2% to 64.0% with 10.7% fewer response tokens, and LiveCodeBench v5 accuracy from 41.7% to 54.2% with 9.6% fewer tokens. The authors report a state-of-the-art accuracy-efficiency Pareto frontier across diverse students and math/code benchmarks, with code planned for release.

Mirai Variant V3G4 Targets IoT Devices

Unit 42 tracked the Mirai variant V3G4 exploiting 13 vulnerabilities across IoT devices and servers from July-December 2022 to build a DDoS botnet.

From July to December 2022, Unit 42 observed three campaigns spreading V3G4, a Mirai botnet variant, by exploiting 13 vulnerabilities, including CVE-2022-26134 in Atlassian Confluence and CVE-2019-15107 in Webmin. The campaigns shared the same C2 domains containing the string 8xl9, nearly identical shell script downloaders, and the same XOR keys, suggesting a single threat actor. The malware brute-forces telnet and SSH credentials, terminates rival botnet processes via a stop list, and receives DDoS commands from its C2. Compromised servers and networking devices are absorbed into the botnet for further attacks.

New KATARU IoT Malware Packs Linux Privilege Escalation Exploits and Mirai-Style DDoS Attacks

Nozomi Networks identified KATARU, a new Mirai-style IoT botnet delivered via Telnet brute force that uses Linux privilege-escalation exploits and encrypted C2 for DDoS floods.

Nozomi Networks identified KATARU in August after a Telnet password-guessing attack against a honeypot retrieved an ARM payload. The malware attempts exploits for CVE-2026-46300 (Fragnesia), CVE-2026-43284 (DirtyFrag), and CVE-2026-31431 (Copy Fail), plus a cgroup v1 release_agent escape, and persists via systemd services, cron tasks, rc scripts, OpenWrt hooks, and Android boot locations. Its C2 uses X25519 key exchange with ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption and supports TCP, UDP, ICMP, HTTP, QUIC, and DNS floods, plus SSH brute forcing and command execution; embedded exploit shellcode in the ARM build targeted x86, suggesting untested copied code.

How Fragile Is Safety Alignment at Frontier Scale? A Single-Direction Attack on a 320B MoE

Researchers show directional ablation breaks refusal in GLM-5.3-Flash, a 320B-parameter MoE, cutting refusal by 41–89 points across seven benchmarks.

The study extends directional ablation, a white-box attack that removes an aligned LLM's refusal behavior, from dense models up to ~70B parameters to GLM-5.3-Flash, a 320B-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 288 routed experts, four-wide hyper-connection residual, and block-FP8 quantization. Editing attention, dense, and routed-expert writers jointly removes 0.776 of refusal, with 74% of the effect existing only under the joint intervention; the conventional module-name-based recipe reaches only 0.066 and fails silently on MoE architectures. The attack yields 41–89 percentage-point reductions in refusal across seven harmful benchmarks with no detected capability change, and a category-concentrated refusal residue survives all edits at ranks 1 to 12.

A Deep Dive Into Attempted Exploitation of CVE-2023

Mirai-like botnet scans exploit TP-Link EOL router flaw CVE-2023-33538 after CISA KEV addition, though observed exploit code is flawed.

Unit 42 observed large-scale automated scans attempting to exploit CVE-2023-33538 in end-of-life TP-Link TL-WR940N, TL-WR740N and TL-WR841N routers after CISA added the flaw to its KEV catalog in June 2025. HTTP GET requests inject commands via the ssid1 parameter at the /userRpm/WlanNetworkRpm endpoint to download and execute an arm7 ELF binary, a Mirai variant related to the Condi IoT botnet. Firmware emulation and reverse engineering showed the observed exploits are flawed and would fail, but the underlying vulnerability is real and successful exploitation requires authentication to the router's web interface. TP-Link confirmed the devices are end-of-life with no patches available and recommends replacing units and eliminating default credentials.
