BGP hijack infecting networks caused by a comedy of errors that’s not funny at all
Attackers BGP-hijacked Softaculous IP space via Hetzner routing lapses to push malicious Virtualizor updates to hosting servers.
Unknown attackers hijacked the 162.55.80.0/24 prefix used by Softaculous' Virtualizor update service by abusing lax routing security at hosting provider Hetzner Online, announcing the range through AS6204, AS62390, and AS24940 with a forged but RPKI-valid origin. The hijack pulsed intermittently over roughly 33 hours, delivering modified update packages to Virtualizor servers, which lacked cryptographic code signing for updates. Softaculous says only a small number of servers were likely affected but cannot produce a definitive list, urging administrators to treat every Virtualizor server as in scope for checks.
CVE-2026-76461: Critical Cisco Secure Email Gateway Vulnerability Exploited in the Wild
Cisco Secure Email Gateway zero-day CVE-2026-76461 (CVSS 9.8) enables unauthenticated root command execution via crafted email; CISA added it to KEV.
CVE-2026-76461 is a critical SQL injection (CVSS 9.8) in Cisco AsyncOS for Secure Email Gateway allowing an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges by sending a specially crafted email through a vulnerable gateway. CISA added it to the KEV catalog on disclosure day, indicating zero-day exploitation, and Cisco PSIRT became aware of active exploitation in September 2026. No public PoC or attribution exists; fixed versions are 15.5.5-014, 16.0.4-302, and 16.5.0-780, and admins should check mail_logs for suspicious SQL statements like 'COPY.*TO PROGRAM'.
CVE-2026-85706: Critical GitLab Path Traversal Exploited in the Wild
CVE-2026-85706, a CVSS 10.0 unauthenticated path traversal in GitLab CE/EE, is actively exploited and was added to CISA's KEV catalog.
GitLab patched CVE-2026-85706, a critical path traversal (CWE-22) in the repository commits API scoring CVSSv3.1 10.0, allowing unauthenticated arbitrary file reads on affected self-managed servers under certain conditions. CISA added it to the KEV catalog on September 11, 2026, citing active exploitation, with a September 14 remediation deadline and BOD 26-04 forensic triage requirements. Fixed versions are 19.1.8, 19.2.6, and 19.3.2; the release also fixes 17 other vulnerabilities including CVE-2026-87719, a CVSS 9.9 insecure deserialization flaw in GitLab EE.
Critical NetScaler Vulnerability Exploited in Attacks
CISA added critical Citrix NetScaler flaw CVE-2026-19490 (CVSS 9.3) to its KEV catalog after confirming exploitation of gateway and AAA virtual servers in the wild.
CISA warned that threat actors are exploiting CVE-2026-19490, a critical-severity flaw (CVSS 9.3) affecting NetScaler ADC and NetScaler Gateway appliances configured as a gateway (SSL VPN, ICA Proxy, CVPN, RDP Proxy) or AAA virtual server. Citrix patched the bug on August 19, and Rapid7 warned it is remotely exploitable without authentication. Sensor data from Previdian shows exploitation ongoing since at least September 3, one day after a public exploit appeared on GitHub, with matching requests observed from three IPs across three countries. CISA added the flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, giving federal agencies three days to patch under BOD 26-04.
wp2shell: incident response guide (CVE-2026-63030 + CVE-2026-60137)
Eye Security published forensic IR tooling for wp2shell (CVE-2026-63030/CVE-2026-60137), the unauthenticated WordPress core RCE chain, after WordPress.org forced auto-updates.
wp2shell chains a REST API batch-endpoint route-confusion bug (CVE-2026-63030) with an SQL injection in WP_Query's author__not_in parameter (CVE-2026-60137), giving unauthenticated attackers rogue admin and code execution on default installs. Adam Kues of Searchlight Cyber discovered the flaw, a public PoC exists on GitHub, and WordPress.org forced automatic updates across an estimated 200M+ sites. Eye Security released a compromise-scanner WordPress plugin and browser extension and notes database artifacts (oEmbed cache rows, changesets) are the primary evidence since the attack is log-blind; fixed versions are 6.8.6, 6.9.5, and 7.0.2.
BGP Hijack Delivers Malicious Virtualizor Update That Establishes Persistent Root Access
Attackers used a BGP hijack to divert Softaculous traffic and push a malicious Virtualizor update granting root persistence on some hypervisors.
Virtualizor reported that a BGP hijack between August 28 20:57 UTC and August 30 06:10 UTC diverted Softaculous update traffic to an attacker-operated server holding a valid Let's Encrypt certificate. Installations checking for updates during the window could receive a malicious package that added an attacker SSH key to root, created a proxyuser account, and installed a Java payload persisted via a systemd service. Hosting provider AlbaHost confirmed 5 of its 34 Virtualizor hypervisors were root-compromised. Virtualizor shipped Patch 9 with a Security Analyzer on September 1, but cryptographic package signing remains future work.
