OpenAI fought dirty on career-making math problem, says NYU mathematician

NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster alleges OpenAI learned of his team's Navier-Stokes approach and raced ahead using massive compute to claim a full proof first.

NYU mathematics professor Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic mathematician Levent Alpöge announced preliminary proofs toward the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, a $1 million Clay Millennium Prize problem, developed using OpenAI's Codex and Claude. They allege OpenAI learned of their progress and that an OpenAI team then used an 'insane amount of compute' to announce a full proof first. OpenAI research lead Sebastian Bubeck denies the claims as 'false and inflammatory'. Buckmaster also raised concerns that OpenAI could have learned from his Codex interactions, which the company may use for model training.

Scareware ads keep running on Google's transparency tool, even after they're reported

NYU and Radboud researchers built AdLens, which found 238 scareware and 3,346 false-claim ads in Google's ad archive; reported ads often stayed live.

The AdLens tool, built by NYU and Radboud University researchers, mined Google's Ads Transparency Center and screened 188,000 software ad creatives using similarity search plus a panel of open-source language models, finding 238 scareware ads, 3,346 false-claim ads, and 258 anonymity-avoiding ads with over 100 million impressions in Europe. Reporting ads through Google's standard flow produced inconsistent removals: some ads acknowledged as violations stayed live, and after one takedown tied to the TamperedChef malware domain, 41 other ads pointing to the same domain kept running. The pipeline runs entirely on open-weight models at low cost (a $96 DigitalOcean VM plus $1.57/hour L40S inference) and is designed to extend to Meta and Amazon ad libraries.

On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem

OpenAI says an unreleased model produced a claimed solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, disputed by an NYU mathematician.

OpenAI used an unreleased model to produce a claimed solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems carrying a $1,000,000 prize since May 24, 2000. The result is contested: NYU mathematics professor Tristan Buckmaster accused collaborators of skulduggery and rushed out his own competing results with mathematician Levent Alpoge, who works at Anthropic. The dispute is documented in a published PDF describing the competing claims.

Curriculum Learning as Transport: Understanding Curricula with Wasserstein Geodesics

Researchers model curriculum learning as Wasserstein transport over difficulty distributions, finding curriculum benefits are strongly task- and budget-dependent with no dominant strategy.

The framework represents curricula as trajectories of training distributions over discrete difficulty levels, decoupling ordering, matched exposure, endpoint smoothness, and pacing. Across a calibrated suite of 12 tasks and 33 difficulty axes under fixed training budgets, no single strategy dominates, though easy-to-hard ordering improves hard-level performance relative to exposure-matched static sampling. Endpoint smoothness and pacing substantially affect where along the difficulty spectrum a curriculum is effective, and the transport view supports extensions to learned pacing and structured difficulty spaces.

OpenAI’s feud with mathematicians is only escalating

25 Fields Medalists sign an open letter warning AI labs threaten math attribution; NYU's Tristan Buckmaster accuses OpenAI of pressuring him over collaborator credit.

Twenty-five Fields Medal-winning mathematicians signed an open letter arguing rushed AI proofs raise severe attribution and plagiarism questions and could destroy the culture of open research. NYU professor Tristan Buckmaster accused OpenAI of pressuring him not to credit an Anthropic-employed collaborator, and OpenAI withdrew sponsorship of a Caltech math event after researcher criticism. OpenAI's marathon-weekend proof remains unverified, and mathematicians fear their Codex usage may be fed into OpenAI's new models. The letter follows the June Leiden Declaration on LLM proofs.

Is Big Tech’s AI slowdown a safety pact or a cartel?

Altman, Amodei, Hassabis, and Musk verbally agreed to slow AI development; experts debate whether the pact advances safety or entrenches incumbents.

OpenAI's Sam Altman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis, and Elon Musk loosely agreed to slow AI development, backing a three-step Amodei essay proposal for third-party auditors, domestic lab regulation, and a global slowdown agreement. Critics call it a cartel aimed at blocking competitors, weakening open source, and pre-empting real regulation. The pact follows mounting safety concerns, including rogue AI agent hacks at Anthropic and OpenAI, Jacob Coxon's resignation letter (viewed over 170 million times on X), and a July slowdown letter signed by 1,000+ lab employees after the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident. Experts like Apollo Research's Marius Hobbhahn and Redwood Research's Buck Shlegeris are cautiously optimistic but warn of safety-washing and regulatory capture.

Who Should Grade My Work? Student Perspectives on Transparent AI-Assisted Writing Assessment in Higher Education

A Saudi university study finds students value ChatGPT writing feedback but treat human instructors as the final grading authority.

Thirteen male undergraduate computing students at a Saudi public university completed handwritten writing tasks that were scored by ChatGPT using a rubric-based prompt, then reflected after being told the score and feedback were AI-generated. Inductive thematic analysis identified four themes: perceived feedback usefulness, awareness of AI's contextual and pedagogical limitations, conditional trust, and reflection on the instructor's institutional role. Participants accepted GenAI feedback for surface-level revision but consistently positioned human instructors as the authority over grading decisions, distinguishing feedback utility from evaluative authority.

Is OpenAI Taking Everyone for Fools?

OpenAI faces accusations it scooped NYU mathematicians' Navier-Stokes proof, possibly using their data, amid skepticism about GPT-6 Astra claims.

NYU mathematicians Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpöge published solutions to decades-old blowup problems for incompressible Euler, Boussinesq, and porous media equations on the same day OpenAI claimed its internal model solved the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem. OpenAI admitted its effort began September 1st after hearing a related rumor and said it cannot rule out that de-identified data from the researchers' use of its products, such as private Codex sessions, helped improve its models. The column questions OpenAI's transparency, noting the company had just released GPT-6 Astra with claims including that AGI has been achieved, following recent controversies over its agent hacking Hugging Face and a German wiki site.

What OpenAI’s latest controversy tells us about the future of math

OpenAI says its agents solved the Navier–Stokes Millennium Problem using an internal model, amid uncredited-work accusations from mathematicians Buckmaster and Alpöge.

OpenAI announced that its AI agents produced a proof that the full Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness problem can break down, using an internal model that outperforms the recently released Astra. NYU's Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic's Levent Alpöge had posted a proof for a simplified version the previous day after nearly a year of work with public OpenAI and Anthropic models. OpenAI denies using their transcripts or training on them; chief research officer Mark Chen reiterated the denial, and the company says it will not claim the $1 million Clay Mathematics Institute prize. The episode fuels debate over attribution norms as frontier labs concentrate mathematical breakthroughs.

New Cryptographic Context Injection Attack Could Let Web Pages Steal Grok Chat Data

Adversa AI demonstrated 'Cryptographic Context Injection' making xAI's Grok leak chat history and session data to attacker-controlled servers via encrypted web payloads.

Adversa AI disclosed a technique where a web page carries an encrypted JSON object (PBKDF2 and AES-256-GCM) that Grok's code-execution runtime decrypts, letting attacker instructions bypass content classifiers and reach the model's context. The decrypted instructions direct Grok to embed the user's name, approximate location, subscription tier and ongoing conversation into a URL it fetches, exfiltrating the data without confirmation. Testing targeted grok.com running Grok 4.5 Fast on August 19, 2026, with a reported 40% success rate over 20 attempts since June; no CVE, patch, or in-the-wild exploitation is reported. A related demonstration reproduced Gemini 3 Flash system instructions via a fabricated Python traceback, while GPT-5 failed to parse the payload and Claude Sonnet 4.5 flagged it as prompt injection.

Technical Manual for a Toolkit for Measuring Contextual Individuation in Transformer Language Models

An open methodology toolkit measures whether transformer language models contextualize fixed word forms across domains using bridge forms and layer-wise silhouette analysis.

The manual documents an open toolkit built around 'bridge forms' - identical written words recurring across two or more subject domains with a different sense in each - to test whether transformer language models individuate word occurrences by context beyond the embedding layer. It covers declarative specification of bridge forms, Wikipedia corpus acquisition, occurrence localization, layer-wise representation extraction, domain-pairwise silhouette measurement, and visualization, justifying each choice against failure modes such as sense contamination and subword-tokenization misalignment. It is a methodological and implementation reference and reports no empirical results.

Rethinking Heterogeneous System Disaggregation for Subquadratic Attention

SQD disaggregates LLM inference by quadratic versus subquadratic attention layers, improving energy efficiency up to 56% on heterogeneous systems versus GPU-only baselines.

SQD (SubQuadratic Disaggregation) splits decode not by operator type but by quadratic versus subquadratic attention, matching their distinct arithmetic intensity and memory footprints. For sparse attention LLMs it separates top-k selection (requiring full KV indexing) from top-k attention plus FFN; for linear and sliding-window models it separates dense attention layers from subquadratic layers plus FFN. On an adjusted 8xB200 heterogeneous proxy, tokens-per-joule improves 53% on GLM 5.2, 31% on Nemotron 3 Ultra, and 56% on Gemma 4 31B. A Rubin plus LPX analytical model shows 1.2x-1.5x tighter achievable latencies and up to 3.6x higher throughput versus attention-FFN disaggregation.

How AI wiped out an entire industry in Nairobi

ChatGPT's rise collapsed Kenya's contract essay-writing industry, which once employed 40,000 people in Nairobi, cutting $40–70-per-paper earnings after 2022.

Writers like Teresios Bundi, who produced over 2,500 papers in twelve years, saw prices and orders collapse after ChatGPT's 2022 launch. Related gig work such as transcription, data annotation, and Meta content moderation has also dried up, leaving 'humanizers' who rewrite AI text to evade plagiarism checks. Kenya's government had promoted online gig work since 2016, and roughly 80 percent of the country's jobs are informal.

A review paper frames on-policy self-distillation collapse as governed by three levers: token weighting, privileged information, and guidance decay.

The paper critically reviews On-Policy Self-Distillation (OPSD), where a language model trains on its own generations scored token-by-token by a teacher conditioned on privileged information such as reference solutions or environment feedback. It identifies collapse, the progressive narrowing of producible reasoning paths, as the dominant failure mode and analyzes it through three levers: signal weighting, the nature of privileged information, and teacher dynamics. The review is restricted to mathematical reasoning, reports no new experiments, and offers a shared vocabulary separating settled findings from disputed ones.

[AINews] 10% worse, 100x cheaper, 10000x faster: Why Simulation is taking over

Latent Space argues AI training pipeline stages—rewards, data, teachers, curricula, environments—are flipping from human-made to model-made simulation.

Latent Space's AINews essay traces how each component of AI training has turned synthetic since 2022: reward models (InstructGPT, RLAIF), synthetic pretraining data (Microsoft Phi, NVIDIA Nemotron-4 340B), model teachers (Alpaca, DeepSeek-R1 distillation), and self-generated curricula (Self-Rewarding Language Models, SPIN). In 2026 it highlights Karpathy's autoresearch loop—700 experiments yielding 20 kept improvements, cutting GPT-2 training time from 2.02 to 1.80 hours—and Z.ai's GLM-5.3 fully synthetic RL environment, judging, and verification stack. Eliciting Weak-to-Strong Generalization with On-Policy Reverse Distillation

OPRD distillation enables weak-to-strong generalization by amplifying verifier-supported policy updates, outperforming existing RL and distillation methods with fewer student updates.

On-Policy Reverse Distillation (OPRD) evaluates a weak teacher's policy shift relative to its reference policy on student rollouts and amplifies the verifier-supported component of the student's policy gradient. This rescaling preserves the stationary points of policy optimization while letting the student learn beyond the teacher's capacity ceiling. In successive model transfer and multi-teacher distillation, OPRD achieves higher performance with fewer student updates than existing RL and distillation approaches, and response-style analysis shows students remain closer to verifier-RL-trained models than to their weak teachers.
