Instagram's head says engagement falls by half without the algorithm

Instagram head Adam Mosseri says disabling ranked feeds cuts engagement up to 50%, amid Australian legislation that would force platforms to offer algorithm opt-outs.

Meta's Adam Mosseri told an Australian press briefing that users switching to chronological feeds see engagement fall by as much as 50% and satisfaction drop sharply, arguing ranked feeds deliver a better experience. Australia's draft Digital Duty of Care bill would require platforms to prompt users to disable algorithmic ranking. The EU's Digital Services Act Article 38 has required very large platforms to offer a non-profiling feed option since 2023, with modest adoption. Meta also faces a social media harms trial in which Instagram's addictive design is at issue.

Have it both ways: stay discoverable in search while disallowing AI training

Cloudflare launches Disallow AI Training setting letting sites block AI training via robots.txt while staying indexed in search; Apple, Google, and Microsoft honor it.

Cloudflare announced a 'Disallow AI Training' setting that publishes a no-training preference in robots.txt so sites can block AI training (including by mixed-use crawlers) without losing search indexing. Apple, Google, and Microsoft meet Cloudflare's new 'Accountable' designation, which requires training/summary opt-out mechanisms, URL-level training visibility, and assurance that opt-outs don't affect search rankings. Cloudflare cites that under 1% of its sites block search bots while 17% block AI training, and its Block settings now apply to mixed-use crawlers as well. Granular controls over how much content appears in AI summaries are planned for early next year.

Twitch is Mining Peoples' Streams to Train Amazon's AI

Twitch will train Amazon's AI models on streamers' content by default, requiring users to manually opt out in security settings.

Twitch announced a setting that lets streamers opt out of having their channel content train Amazon's generative AI models, confirming about a week of rumors. The toggle, labeled 'Allow your channel content to train generative AI content models at Amazon,' is opt-out rather than opt-in and sits at the bottom of the security settings page. Critics note many streamers may never learn of the change or find the buried setting, sweeping their content into Amazon's training data by default.

A Hacker News user reports OpenAI's 'allow training' setting re-enables itself after being disabled, raising concerns about opt-out data usage.

A Hacker News user reports resetting OpenAI's 'allow training' opt-out multiple times, with careful tracking, only to find the setting re-enabled on later checks. Commenters speculate about backend sync failures, optimistic UI updates and local storage behavior, or deliberate re-enabling to widen training data usage. Some users report the setting remained disabled, including one EU citizen.

FTC rescinds policy requiring health apps to notify customers after a breach

The FTC unanimously rescinded its 2021 policy statement that required health and fitness apps to notify users after health-data breaches.

The FTC voted to rescind a September 2021 Biden-era policy statement that extended federal health-data breach notification rules to health apps, fitness trackers, and connected devices, which had exposed violators to fines of $43,792 per violation per day. The 2021 statement, adopted in a divided 3-2 vote under then-chair Lina Khan, cited HIPAA coverage gaps for consumer health applications. The commission said the statement provided minimal benefit, was superseded by rulemaking, and aligns with the White House deregulatory agenda.

How to opt out of AI chatbot training

Malwarebytes guides users through disabling AI training use of chats in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude after OpenAI's human review program emerged.

404 Media reported that OpenAI's 'Project Lily' hires hundreds of contractors to review ChatGPT prompts, with a 'Privacy Filter' removing personal data and usernames hidden, though user memories summaries can still reveal identifying details. The article provides opt-out steps: ChatGPT Settings > Data Controls > 'Improve the model for everyone' (on by default), Perplexity Settings > Preferences > AI data retention, and Claude Settings > Privacy > 'Help Improve our AI Models'. Opting out does not prevent all human access, which remains allowed for abuse investigation, support, troubleshooting, and legal matters.

ThinkPrior: Zero-Rollout Difficulty Priors for Cold-Start Prompt Selection in RLVR

ThinkPrior builds zero-rollout difficulty priors via an offline verifier-anchored pass, halving silent groups in RLVR and cutting wasted rollouts on Qwen2.5-Math-7B.

In GRPO-based RLVR, groups where all rollouts are correct or all are wrong yield zero advantages and consume about 39% of a run's rollouts under uniform sampling. ThinkPrior initializes a Beta posterior from an external anchor pass's verifier-scored pass rate, selecting prompts by expected learnability before any target-policy rollout, without changing the loss or optimizer. On Qwen2.5-Math-7B across sixteen seeds it more than halves early silent groups and cuts wasted rollouts through step 30 by nearly a fifth, with no detected final-accuracy difference. The ThinkPrior+DAPO composition reduces generated rollouts by 10.6% at an equal 3,840-rollout update budget.

Inside ‘Project Lily’: The Humans Reading Your ChatGPT Chats

404 Media reveals OpenAI's 'Project Lily' has hundreds of contractors reading real ChatGPT user prompts, exposing sensitive personal data despite privacy filters.

404 Media reports that OpenAI employs hundreds of contractors who read real ChatGPT user prompts, including whole conversations, to rate and critique the chatbot's responses across a user base of over 900 million. Prompts are anonymized and run through OpenAI's Privacy Filter model, but the company acknowledged sensitive personal details can still reach reviewers, and 'user memories summaries' may reveal a user's location and personal context. The review work includes training ChatGPT to be less sycophantic and to stop anthropomorphizing itself, following lawsuits linking the sycophantic 4o model to multiple suicides. Anthropic confirmed it also uses human review to improve its models, and OpenAI's 'improve the model for everyone' data-sharing setting is on by default for free, Plus, and Pro users.

OpenAI fought dirty on career-making math problem, says NYU mathematician

NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster alleges OpenAI learned of his team's Navier-Stokes approach and raced ahead using massive compute to claim a full proof first.

NYU mathematics professor Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic mathematician Levent Alpöge announced preliminary proofs toward the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, a $1 million Clay Millennium Prize problem, developed using OpenAI's Codex and Claude. They allege OpenAI learned of their progress and that an OpenAI team then used an 'insane amount of compute' to announce a full proof first. OpenAI research lead Sebastian Bubeck denies the claims as 'false and inflammatory'. Buckmaster also raised concerns that OpenAI could have learned from his Codex interactions, which the company may use for model training.

Ask Before You Optimize: Dynamic Pre-Formulation Clarification for Interactive Optimization

Researchers release OR-Clarify, a benchmark testing whether LLM agents ask clarifying questions before formulating optimization models from incomplete requests.

OR-Clarify evaluates pre-formulation clarification in operations research: each task gives a partial problem description, withholds structured hidden slots, and scores agents via bounded interaction with a simulated user, measuring slot recovery, stopping behavior, silent assumptions, and interaction cost. The authors also propose InterOPT, a two-stage framework that identifies formulation-critical gaps to decide when to ask or stop. In choice-based experiments InterOPT substantially outperforms all baselines in exact slot recovery and remains competitive in the open-ended setting.

PLC-DPO: Posterior Label Correction in Noisy and Ambiguous Preference Optimization

PLC-DPO corrects noisy preference labels during DPO by routing each pair as clean, flip, or tie using calibrated policy-reference margins.

PLC-DPO addresses reversed, weak, or ambiguous preference labels in Direct Preference Optimization by using the calibrated policy-reference margin as online evidence to route each pair's training signal as clean, flip, or tie. This actively corrects supervision direction and strength rather than only filtering suspicious examples. Across 57 dataset-model-benchmark cells, PLC-DPO achieves the best mean win rate of 60.5 versus 55.5 for the next-best method. Injected-noise and tie stress tests plus human disagreement analysis show the routing stays stable and distinguishes flipped from weakly directional pairs.

The EPA Is Planning to Scrap Public Review Rules for Data Center Pollution

The EPA plans to eliminate mandatory public review of air-pollution permits for AI data centers and their power plants, reducing community input.

The EPA proposes scrapping a federal requirement that states notify the public and accept comments before approving air-pollution permits for industrial facilities, including AI data centers and their power plants. A related proposal would let developers begin construction before permits are approved. Nearly 200 advocacy groups and more than a dozen states oppose the changes; critics cite health risks, rising utility bills, housing displacement, and disproportionate impacts on Black communities in the rural South, while the EPA argues the changes speed permitting. The proposal is expected to be finalized within the next year.

Open VSX Removes 77 Malicious Evil Twin Extensions Exfiltrating Developer Data

77 malicious 'evil twin' Open VSX extensions impersonated developer tools and exfiltrated hostnames and detailed workspace reconnaissance to mangorbit.com.

Manifold Security found 77 extensions uploaded to the Open VSX marketplace between July 26 and August 1, 2026 that impersonate real Microsoft VS Code Marketplace tools, with all 77 sending data to mangorbit.com. 58 lightweight variants exfiltrate the hostname, while 19 recon variants collect editor details, OS username, Git remote hosts, CI environment variables (GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, Buildkite, CircleCI, Codespaces, Gitpod), and installed extension IDs. The recon variant retries for up to seven days and can fall back to a DNS TXT record for exfiltration if the primary domain is blocked. The extensions were removed from Open VSX by August 3, 2026; the disclosure follows a separate npm supply chain campaign, ChainDrop, which compromised 450 packages with a Shai-Hulud worm variant.

You Can't Prefer Emotions You Don't Sample: Intensity Undershoot in DPO-Tuned LLMs

Study quantifies DPO-tuned LLMs undershooting requested emotional intensity, tracing the gap to candidate-pool extremity rather than conditioning format.

Conditioning an instruction-tuned LLM on continuous valence-arousal targets yields gain of only 0.26 for valence and 0.13 for arousal on Llama-3.1-8B, far below faithful control of 1.0. The authors attribute undershoot to neutral-heavy preference corpora like EmoBank and candidate pools lacking extreme affect, leaving DPO without extreme exemplars. Uniform target coverage with a hotter candidate pool raises valence gain to 0.40 on Llama-3.1-8B and 0.44 on Qwen3-8B, with modest in-distribution cost; arousal gains remain unstable across seeds.

Safety for Whom? Boundary-Aware Self-Distillation for Controlled LLM Safety Refusal

A self-distillation safety framework tunes narrow-boundary refusals in Qwen3-8B, raising target-domain refusal to 84.75% while cutting over-refusal from 15.20% to 5.20%.

The paper formulates narrow-boundary safety, where deployments need refusals within specific topics rather than whole subjects, and proposes an offline self-generated framework with controlled topic generation, escalating retries, and harmful-benign boundary pairs. On political persuasion with Qwen3-8B, the method raised target-domain refusal from 9.47% to 84.75% and cut the mean unsafe-response rate across three broader benchmarks from 26.26% to 0.14%. Verified target-model responses reduced over-refusal from 15.20% to 5.20%, and boundary-pair data cut comply-side over-refusal on held-out pairs from 32.94% to 4.16%. Results show data composition controls the safety-usability trade-off and alignment should be evaluated on both sides of the refusal boundary.

Learning Multimodal One-step Flow Policy via Value-weighted Optimal Transport

OptiFlow learns one-step multimodal flow policies for offline RL via state-wise entropic optimal transport, avoiding critic overestimation and mode collapse.

The paper introduces OptiFlow, a framework that frames one-step flow policy learning as a structured sample-allocation problem in offline reinforcement learning. It jointly trains a value-aware reference flow policy and a one-step policy, coupling action samples through state-wise entropic optimal transport where critic values set distillation priority and action-distance cost ensures geometrically compatible pairings. By avoiding direct critic maximization, it anchors the policy to high-value dataset-supported modes without out-of-distribution divergence. Code is released on GitHub and the method performs strongly across diverse offline RL benchmarks.

The Model Proposes, the Code Disposes: A Pre-Registered Ablation of a Verifier-and-Acceptance Stage in an LLM-Orchestrated Offensive-Security Agent

Pre-registered ablation finds a model verifier stage in an LLM offensive-security agent suppresses findings; removing it eliminated suppression with precision tradeoff.

The paper evaluates a verifier-and-acceptance stage in an LLM-orchestrated offensive-security agent via a pre-registered 20-run confirmatory ablation and a 2x2 factorial study with 40 runs on vulnerable lab targets. Removing the stage eliminated pre-report suppression (median 2 vs 0 findings, p = 0.00003) but reduced model-blinded shipped precision (0.471 vs 0.353, p = 0.0087). Suppression was attributed to the model verifier rather than deterministic acceptance rules, and an instrumented canary recorded zero external contacts in all 60 runs. The full design retained 93.8% of model-adjudicated true candidates but failed its pre-registered non-inferiority floor of 0.90.
