BGP hijack infecting networks caused by a comedy of errors that’s not funny at all

Attackers BGP-hijacked Softaculous IP space via Hetzner routing lapses to push malicious Virtualizor updates to hosting servers.

Unknown attackers hijacked the 162.55.80.0/24 prefix used by Softaculous' Virtualizor update service by abusing lax routing security at hosting provider Hetzner Online, announcing the range through AS6204, AS62390, and AS24940 with a forged but RPKI-valid origin. The hijack pulsed intermittently over roughly 33 hours, delivering modified update packages to Virtualizor servers, which lacked cryptographic code signing for updates. Softaculous says only a small number of servers were likely affected but cannot produce a definitive list, urging administrators to treat every Virtualizor server as in scope for checks.

Off Guard: Breaking LiteLLM from authentication bypass to cloud compromise

Wiz found LiteLLM auth bypass (CVE-2026-59822) and post-auth RCE (CVE-2026-59821) chainable to cloud compromise; the bypass is in CISA KEV with in-the-wild exploitation.

Wiz scanned roughly 3,074 internet-facing LiteLLM deployments and found 9.6% accepted the default master key sk-1234 or required no authentication, making post-auth attacks effectively pre-auth. The MCP endpoint accepts any Bearer token and grants a valid session (CVE-2026-59822), confirmed exploited in the wild via honeypots and added to CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Custom code guardrails allow post-auth root-level RCE via exec(compile(...)) (CVE-2026-59821), while pass-through endpoints lack URL validation, enabling cloud credential theft in post-auth scenarios. All assigned vulnerabilities have been patched; the research was presented at DEF CON 34.

BGP Hijack Delivers Malicious Virtualizor Update That Establishes Persistent Root Access

Attackers used a BGP hijack to divert Softaculous traffic and push a malicious Virtualizor update granting root persistence on some hypervisors.

Virtualizor reported that a BGP hijack between August 28 20:57 UTC and August 30 06:10 UTC diverted Softaculous update traffic to an attacker-operated server holding a valid Let's Encrypt certificate. Installations checking for updates during the window could receive a malicious package that added an attacker SSH key to root, created a proxyuser account, and installed a Java payload persisted via a systemd service. Hosting provider AlbaHost confirmed 5 of its 34 Virtualizor hypervisors were root-compromised. Virtualizor shipped Patch 9 with a Security Analyzer on September 1, but cryptographic package signing remains future work.

Hackers Exploit Critical Cisco Secure Email Gateway Vulnerability in the Wild to Run Malicious Code

Cisco warns attackers actively exploit zero-day CVE-2026-76461 in Secure Email Gateway, gaining unauthenticated root command execution via crafted emails.

Cisco PSIRT confirmed active in-the-wild exploitation of CVE-2026-76461 throughout September 2026, a zero-day in Secure Email Gateway AsyncOS that lets remote, unauthenticated attackers execute arbitrary commands with root privileges by sending maliciously crafted emails containing injected SQL statements. Physical appliances, virtual deployments, and Cisco Secure Email Cloud instances were affected; Cisco deployed server-side remediations for cloud tenants but on-premises admins must patch themselves. Fixes ship in AsyncOS 16.5.0-780 plus branches 16.0.4-3021 and 15.5.5-0141, and no workarounds exist.

CISA added both CVEs to its KEV catalog with a July 24, 2026 deadline, and WordPress.org enabled forced auto-updates; fixes shipped in 6.8.6, 6.9.5, and 7.0.2.

Cosmos EVM Flaw Exploited After Cosmos Labs Knew Every Blockchain Running It Was Vulnerable

Attackers exploited a critical Cosmos EVM balance bug (GHSA-7g4w-cg88-2cq2) to drain funds from six blockchains; fixed in v0.6.2 and v0.7.2.

Cosmos Labs disclosed that a critical balance-handling flaw in the shared Cosmos EVM module (GHSA-7g4w-cg88-2cq2, no CVE) was exploited to drain funds from six blockchains between August 20 and 25, 2026. The bug, reported April 25 and initially judged harmless, lets vesting accounts delegate more than their spendable balance, wrapping balances to roughly 2^256 and triggering unintended mint/burn in reconciliation, potentially halting chains or burning victims' holdings. Fixes shipped in v0.6.2 and v0.7.2 on August 19 as state-breaking coordinated network upgrades; operators who cannot upgrade must halt their chains. The post-mortem notes the team used public silent patching for a fund-threatening issue, contrary to its own bug bounty policy, and that eleven deployments had never registered with its security channels.
