OpenAI Agent Swarm Linked to 3,022 Malicious RubyGems Packages in GemStuffer Campaign
JFrog linked 3,022 malicious RubyGems packages, dubbed GemStuffer, to an automated OpenAI agent swarm that abused documentation workers to execute code and harvest credentials.
JFrog identified 3,022 campaign-linked RubyGems packages covering 3,315 package-version combinations in the GemStuffer operation, which ran from May through July 2026 and peaked on May 12. Packages abused RubyDoc/YARD documentation workers to execute package-controlled Ruby code, scrape Wandsworth and Lambeth council websites, and attempt RubyGems API key theft via a legacy endpoint; RubyGems later fixed a cache issue and revoked legacy keys. Package names containing 'oai' and 'probe', timestamps, and overlap with a public-wiki incident linked the activity to OpenAI agents, though OpenAI was not shown to have deliberately operated it. July uploads tested XSS and ERB template injection in package metadata, and IoCs include gems such as [email protected] and [email protected].
Iranian Hackers Use Telegram-Controlled Malware to Spy on Dissidents and Journalists
FBI, NCSC, and AIVD detail Iran MOIS spyware CHOSEN BRICK/HEAVYGRAM, Telegram-controlled Windows malware spying on dissidents since 2023.
A September 15 joint advisory from the FBI, UK NCSC, and Dutch AIVD attributes the Windows spyware HEAVYGRAM (NCSC name CHOSEN BRICK) to Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security, with the campaign dating to autumn 2023 and targeting dissidents, journalists, and activists in the UK, US, Netherlands, and worldwide. Delivered via messages impersonating known contacts or tech support, the malware assigns each victim a dedicated Telegram bot for command-and-control and exfiltration, and can take screenshots, record microphone audio, steal Telegram/WhatsApp data, saved passwords, and emails, download more malware, and wipe the computer. Persistence uses a registry Run key (SMQDService or winappx) plus Microsoft Defender exclusions, with stolen data exiting via Telegram and cloud storage services like Vultr and Storj. The US Justice Department seized four pro-Iranian leak sites in March that had published stolen victim data.
Malicious Twitch Extension Exposes OAuth Tokens of 30,000 Chrome and Firefox Users
Malicious 'Twitch Enhanced Viewer | JeetBot' browser extension stole live OAuth session tokens from roughly 31,000 Chrome and Firefox users.
Socket.dev found the cross-store extension 'Twitch Enhanced Viewer | JeetBot' rerouted Twitch playlist requests through operator-controlled proxies, attaching the victim's account-level OAuth token as a URL parameter where it could be logged in cleartext. About 30,000 Chrome and 552 Firefox installs were exposed, with tokens forwarded for nearly every watched channel to infrastructure tied to a Russian commercial bot service. The stolen bearer token enables chat, whisper, account-setting access and channel-point spending without the password or 2FA.
Malicious Twitch Browser Extension Leaks OAuth Tokens From Nearly 31,000 Users
Malicious Twitch extension 'Twitch Enhanced Viewer | JeetBot' leaked OAuth tokens from nearly 31,000 users to Russian bot-service proxy servers.
Socket researchers found the 'Twitch Enhanced Viewer | JeetBot' browser extension forwarded users' live Twitch OAuth tokens as an &auth= query parameter to operator-controlled proxy servers, affecting about 30,000 Chrome users and 604 Firefox users. The tokens, written in cleartext to proxy logs, are bearer credentials granting access to chat, whispers, and account settings without password or 2FA. The operator is a Russian commercial Twitch/Kick/VK-Live bot SaaS linked to Cyprus-based developer Aleksandr Popov; earlier v4.x builds also POSTed tokens to a set-token endpoint. Firefox add-on version 85.8.7 stops the token forwarding, but previously transmitted tokens remain valid until revoked.
Hackers Use Fake GTA 6 Downloads to Deploy RATs, Infostealers and Data-Wiping Malware
Huntress tracked fake GTA 6 downloads distributing NJRAT, DCRAT, Mercurial Grabber, and Chaos ransomware used as a wiper against gamers.
Cybercriminals are pushing fake Grand Theft Auto VI downloads through poisoned search results, gaming forums, torrent sites, and social media, targeting players seeking a leaked build before release. Huntress analyzed a sample bundling NJRAT, DCRAT, Mercurial Grabber, and Chaos ransomware in one package; fake ISO files exceed 100GB largely with junk data, and Russian-language prompts suggest the operators target Russian-speaking gamers. Chaos ransomware acts as a wiper, overwriting files larger than 200MB with random data, deleting shadow copies for admin users, and disabling recovery options rather than offering genuine ransom payment paths.
Gigabud Creates Android Work Profiles to Hide From Banking App Malware Checks
Group-IB reports the Gigabud Android banking trojan uses a cloned work profile to hide from banking app malware checks, with infections confirmed in Indonesia.
Group-IB says Gigabud installs a helper app called Vwork, derived from the open-source Shelter tool, which creates an Android work profile and drops a tampered banking app inside it, hiding the trojan from banking apps' malware scans. Gigabud, active since 2022 and linked by Group-IB to the GoldFactory group, abuses Accessibility access and overlay screens to steal credentials and run fraudulent payments while a black screen conceals the operator's actions. Group-IB confirmed the full attack chain on infected devices in Indonesia, counting about 1,469 compromised devices and estimated losses of roughly $960,000 between February and July 2026. Vwork-compatible Gigabud samples have been found targeting 11 countries including Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, and Türkiye, though only the Indonesian chain is confirmed.
Grand Theft Auto VI hype leads to malware
Fake GTA6 ISO downloads spread via SEO poisoning, torrents, and forums deliver NJRAT, DCRAT, an infostealer, and wiper ransomware.
Huntress analyzed a malicious ISO masquerading as a leaked Grand Theft Auto VI build; there is no official GTA6 demo or leaked playable copy. The fake gta6installer.exe shows a Russian 'license' message asking victims to email the attacker if the crack fails, then drops GTA6-branded files into %TEMP%. It installs multiple repurposed NJRAT copies (2023-era files) connecting to AWS-hosted IPs 35.157.111.131, 3.68.56.232, 3.67.15.169 and an ngrok tunnel, plus DCRAT communicating with a0700877.xsph.ru (141.8.197.42). The bundle also includes an infostealer and ransomware used as a wiper, in what appears to be an opportunistic, everything-at-once campaign.
Hackers Clone Banking Apps Into Hidden Android Work Profiles to Evade Fraud Detection
GoldFactory-linked Gigabud and Vwork malware clone banking apps into hidden Android work profiles to evade fraud detection across 11+ countries.
Group-IB links Vwork, a modified version of the open-source Shelter app cloner, to the GoldFactory group and its Gigabud Android RAT, which clones victim banking apps into an isolated work profile so fraud sessions look clean to banks. From February through July 2026, researchers observed about 1,469 compromised devices and 1,281 potentially compromised logins in Indonesia, with estimated losses near $960,939. Targets span Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Indonesia, Mexico, Morocco, the Philippines, Thailand, Türkiye, Laos, and a GCC state; delivery uses fake airline, tax, government, and banking apps pushed via phishing sites, messaging apps, and social media.
Hackers Target Claude, Cursor and Codex AI Agents to Steal Tokens and Prompt Histories
Gen Digital found infostealers like Amatera and Remus stealing AI coding agent tokens, prompt histories, and MCP configs from infected Windows and macOS machines.
Gen Digital analysts observed Amatera and Remus detections among tens of thousands of protected Windows users over three months, with Amatera targeting Cline and Continue data and Remus targeting Claude, Cursor, and OpenCode. CallbackBeaver added Cursor and Claude to its collection scope with more than 5,000 samples in 30 days, while macOS-focused Djinn Stealer has been associated with Claude, Codex, Gemini, Cline, OpenCode, and Kilo. The stealers harvest access and refresh tokens, prompt histories, and MCP configuration files that can expose source control, ticketing, databases, cloud resources, and sensitive project context for follow-on fraud. Many stealers add targets via remotely managed rules, meaning this is an adaptation of existing infostealers rather than a new vulnerability in the AI tools themselves.
Infostealers Target Claude, Cursor, Codex and Other AI Agents to Steal Credentials and Sensitive Data
Gen Digital researchers report infostealer families Amatera, Remus and CallbackBeaver now harvest Claude, Cursor and Codex agent data, including tokens and MCP configs.
Gen Digital researchers found commodity infostealers extending their collection rules to local AI coding agent data from Claude, Cursor, Codex, Cline, Continue and OpenCode on Windows and macOS. Amatera targets Cline and Continue, Remus targets Claude, Cursor and OpenCode, and CallbackBeaver added Claude and Cursor with more than 5,000 samples observed in 30 days; Djinn Stealer hits Claude, Codex, Gemini, Cline, OpenCode and Kilo on macOS. Stolen data includes access and refresh tokens, prompt histories, conversation databases and MCP configurations holding API keys, potentially exposing connected source-control, cloud and ticketing systems. Remus is assessed as a Lumma Stealer variant using EtherHiding C2 resolution via Ethereum smart contracts.
ClearFake WebDAV infection chain delivers Amatera stealer, ZigCryptoStealer, and NetSupport Manager
Cisco Talos details ClearFake WebDAV chains delivering Amatera stealer to a Ukrainian government organization, with cryptocurrency and credential theft payloads.
Cisco Talos investigated DLL executions named 'verification.google' via WebDAV UNC paths at a Ukrainian government organization, tracking the actor as UAT-10820 and assessing with moderate confidence the activity is Russian and opportunistic rather than targeted. The infection chain uses ClearFake JavaScript injected via a Cloudflare Worker, EtherHiding storage on BNB Smart Chain contracts, and a ClickFix fake Google CAPTCHA prompt to deliver Amatera stealer. Secondary payloads differ by C2: one loader deploys ZigCryptoStealer with a Go reverse TCP proxy and a vulnerable driver that kills EDR, while the other installs an unauthorized NetSupport Manager with a Russia-based C2. Similar Amatera chains were separately documented by Malwarebytes and Blackpoint Cyber, but with no shared infrastructure.
Fake Software Installers Disable Windows Update and Weaken Microsoft Defender
Fake software-download sites distribute installers that disable Windows Update and weaken Defender, attributed to China-linked cluster Silver Fox.
Microsoft says an active campaign uses counterfeit vendor websites on .com.cn and .hl.cn infrastructure with Chinese-language lures to deliver server-side generated installers that establish scheduled-task persistence, add Defender exclusions, delete shadow copies, and stop services including wuauserv, UsoSvc, uhssvc and WaaSMedicSvc. Victims span healthcare, manufacturing, gaming, technology, logistics, government and education, primarily China-based operations of multinationals and Chinese-speaking users. Microsoft assesses with moderate confidence the activity matches the Silver Fox (Yinhu) cluster, historically tied to Gh0st RAT and ValleyRAT, with C2 over non-standard ports like 5090 and 7088-7090 via domains iualef[.]net and oijfwe[.]net. Kaspersky separately detailed a QN Wallpaper DLL-sideloading chain delivering ValleyRAT.
Infostealers Are Hijacking Claude Sessions and Draining Subscriptions
Infostealers hijacked active Claude sessions to bypass 2FA, drain paid usage and run unauthorized charges; Anthropic is revoking sessions and refunding.
Anthropic confirmed that infostealer malware on user machines stole active Claude login sessions, letting attackers bypass passwords, MFA, and SSO and drain paid usage and run unauthorized charges. Affected families identified on Windows include Vidar, LummaC2, StealC, RedLine, and Acreed, plus Atomic Stealer on a small number of Macs; the malware typically arrived via unofficial downloads or malicious apps. Anthropic signed users out, removed saved payment cards, revoked affected sessions, and is refunding unauthorized charges, noting phones and tablets were not involved.
ToxicPanda 2.0 and GoldDigger Expand Android Banking Attacks with On
Zimperium and IBM Trusteer report expanded ToxicPanda 2.0 and GoldDigger Android banking trojan campaigns now targeting 349 financial institutions across 16 countries.
Zimperium zLabs reports ToxicPanda 2.0 (TgToxic) now carries 167 remote commands, targets 349 financial institutions across 16 countries via more than 140 banking and cryptocurrency apps, and abuses Android Wireless Debugging via ADB for privilege escalation and shell access. It harvests lock screen PINs with fake overlays, steals UI elements via accessibility services, sets Device Administrator privileges, and is distributed through Amazon AWS-hosted buckets. IBM Trusteer documents a GoldDigger campaign impersonating airline companies and shopping retailers, causing massive infections in South Africa and the U.K., obfuscated with the dpt-shell packer that detects Frida and resists debugging. GoldDigger performs on-device fraud by injecting input into banking apps and is attributed to the Chinese-speaking GoldFactory actor.
Apple warned hundreds of users of mercenary spyware attacks
Apple sent threat notifications to users in 110 countries warning of targeted mercenary spyware attacks and recommending Lockdown Mode.
Apple sent a new round of threat notifications warning users in 110 countries they may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware, adding to alerts issued in more than 150 countries since the program began in 2021. The company says such attacks are vastly more sophisticated than criminal activity, cost millions of dollars, and typically target journalists, activists, politicians, diplomats, and lawyers. Apple recommends verifying notices directly at account.apple.com, enabling Lockdown Mode, keeping devices updated, and seeking expert help such as Access Now's Digital Security Helpline. Citizen Lab researchers note the alerts can reveal that entire communities are under targeted surveillance.
