US, UK, Dutch Agencies Expose Iranian ‘Chosen Brick’ Surveillance Malware

US, UK, and Dutch agencies warn Iranian state actors deploy Windows surveillance malware 'Chosen Brick' against dissidents, activists, and journalists worldwide.

Joint advisories from US, UK, and Dutch agencies describe Chosen Brick, a Windows surveillance malware active since at least 2025 and used by Iranian state cyber actors to track regime opponents. The malware harvests contacts, emails, and social media messages, persists via registry Run keys, evades Microsoft Defender, and uses per-victim Telegram bot IDs for command-and-control and exfiltration. Operators build rapport on WhatsApp and Telegram posing as acquaintances or support staff, disguising payloads as utility software or fake medical documents. Capabilities include screenshot capture, audio recording, credential theft, secondary payload delivery, and data wiping.

The Machine With Many Faces: Post-Exploitation Identity Misuse in SPIFFE/SPIRE

Unit 42 demonstrates that root access on a Kubernetes node lets attackers spoof SPIFFE/SPIRE attestation and harvest co-located workloads' SVIDs.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 describes post-exploitation techniques in which an attacker with root on a compromised Kubernetes node spoofs Linux cgroup metadata used by the SPIRE agent during workload attestation, tricking it into issuing a co-located workload's SPIFFE Verifiable Identity Document to an attacker-controlled process. The research shows the core trust assumption of machine-identity systems—that the node is trusted—collapses once root is obtained, exposing all cryptographic identities scoped to that node. Unit 42 released an open-source tool, Spooffe, for defenders to test identity exposure, and notes the technique has not been observed exploited in the wild.

Exaforce extends its AI security tool to monitor more than just Claude

Exaforce AI Security extends beyond Claude to monitor OpenAI, Gemini, and Copilot agents using existing SOC telemetry, no new endpoint agents.

Exaforce expanded its June Claude Compliance API integration into Exaforce AI Security, adding monitoring for OpenAI, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and OAuth-connected AI apps. The tool inventories AI agents by correlating EDR, cloud, SaaS, and model-provider logs without new gateways or endpoint agents, and can respond by revoking sessions, deactivating API keys, isolating devices, or killing agent processes via existing controls. Analysts note the agentless approach lowers friction but lacks runtime inspection and inline blocking offered by competitors such as Palo Alto Prisma AIRS, SentinelOne Prompt AI Agent Security, and CrowdStrike Falcon Guardian. A March 2026 Cloud Security Alliance survey found 68% of organizations cannot distinguish human from AI-agent activity and 74% report AI agents receive excessive access.

FST Pay: Deterministic Safety-Gated Architecture for Youth Digital Payments

FST Pay proposes a deterministic safety-gated architecture for teen digital payments, pairing invariant authorization checks with decoupled post-settlement AI explanations.

Researchers propose FST Pay, a formal architecture for adolescent digital payments on rails like UPI that applies six deterministic invariant checks (spending limits, guardian co-sign policies, amount thresholds, merchant category codes, temporal intervals, hardware integrity) to classify transactions as ALLOW, REVIEW, or BLOCK. High-risk transactions trigger an asynchronous guardian co-sign workflow. Generative AI is restricted to post-settlement natural-language insights and holds no mutation privileges over the ledger, avoiding non-determinism on the real-time authorization path.

Securing AI agents: Key controls and best practices

Security experts warn AI agents with employee-level privileges outpace human access controls and advise layered enforcement, sandboxing, and approval gates.

CSO reports that enterprises granting AI agents credentials, tools, and network access face risks that human-focused identity controls cannot contain, including machine-speed action chaining and sub-agent spawning. Experts from Strike Graph, Veracode, Delinea, and XBOW recommend treating agents as privileged insiders with hard technical boundaries: egress proxies with allowlists, short-lived brokered tokens, separated read/write rights, and approval for high-risk actions. XBOW describes a layered architecture with a guardian model reviewing agent actions and per-agent audit files. OWASP guidance on excessive agency urges limiting agent functions, permissions, and autonomy with authorization enforced downstream.

AI Doesn't Mean the End of Mathematics—at Least Not Yet

Schneier and Rafi argue frontier AI models produce notable mathematical results but cannot yet build genuinely new conceptual frameworks.

ASCII smuggling crosses over from AI prompt injection to phishing evasion

Microsoft details high-volume phishing campaign using ASCII smuggling (Unicode tag chars) for filter evasion, peaking at 2.3M messages.

Microsoft researchers observed a high-volume finance-themed phishing campaign using invisible Unicode tag characters (U+E0000–U+E007F), a technique known from AI prompt injection research as ASCII smuggling, to split lure words like 'funding' and evade email filters. Telemetry from Microsoft Defender for Office 365 showed signature hits jump from roughly 21,000 messages on February 8, 2026 to more than 1.3 million on February 9, peaking above 2.3 million on February 11, with elevated weekday activity lasting approximately three months. The discovery emerged from prompt injection protection research, showing AI-era evasion techniques crossing into traditional phishing. Most messages were flagged by layered Defender protections rather than a single Unicode-specific signal.

Google Open-Sources Mantis: A Modular Skills Toolkit That Lets Coding Agents Find, Reproduce and Patch Vulnerabilities

Google open-sourced Mantis, an Apache-2.0 modular skills toolkit that lets AI coding agents find, reproduce, and patch vulnerabilities with sandboxed verification.

Google released Mantis on GitHub under Apache 2.0 as a stack-agnostic set of slash-command skills that chain through the full vulnerability lifecycle: mining version history, building threat models, filtering findings, reproducing bugs in gVisor or network-disabled VMs, assembling exploit chains, patching, and scoring residual risk from 1 to 10. It runs with Gemini CLI, Antigravity CLI, the Google ADK, or comparable agent frameworks, and a supervisor skill (/mantis-meta-agent) can drive the whole loop. Google says the design targets the sub-7 percent true-positive rate of naive AI code scanning, and that its hierarchical summary tree cuts token overhead by over 85 percent. The toolkit is deployable for local and internal evaluation but not yet recommended for production.

The Model Proposes, the Code Disposes: A Pre-Registered Ablation of a Verifier-and-Acceptance Stage in an LLM-Orchestrated Offensive-Security Agent

Pre-registered ablation finds a model verifier stage in an LLM offensive-security agent suppresses findings; removing it eliminated suppression with precision tradeoff.

The paper evaluates a verifier-and-acceptance stage in an LLM-orchestrated offensive-security agent via a pre-registered 20-run confirmatory ablation and a 2x2 factorial study with 40 runs on vulnerable lab targets. Removing the stage eliminated pre-report suppression (median 2 vs 0 findings, p = 0.00003) but reduced model-blinded shipped precision (0.471 vs 0.353, p = 0.0087). Suppression was attributed to the model verifier rather than deterministic acceptance rules, and an instrumented canary recorded zero external contacts in all 60 runs. The full design retained 93.8% of model-adjudicated true candidates but failed its pre-registered non-inferiority floor of 0.90.
