Teams calls are about to get a lot harder to fake

Microsoft will roll out Brand Impersonation Protection in Teams Calling from mid-May 2026, warning users about suspicious inbound VoIP calls impersonating trusted brands.

Microsoft Teams Calling is gaining Brand Impersonation Protection, which evaluates inbound VoIP calls from first-time external callers for signs of brand impersonation and displays warnings before users answer high-risk calls. The feature rolls out from mid-May 2026 with completion expected by late May 2026, is enabled by default, and requires no administrative action. Users can accept, block, or end flagged calls, and alerts may continue throughout a call if suspicious activity persists. Microsoft recommends preparing helpdesk teams and updating security awareness materials ahead of deployment.

OpenSSL 4.1.0 Alpha1 Released With DTLS 1.3 and Faster Post-Quantum Cryptography

OpenSSL 4.1.0 Alpha1 adds DTLS 1.3 support, ML-DSA and ML-KEM post-quantum optimizations, and GREASE TLS compatibility, intended for testing only.

The alpha preview of OpenSSL 4.1.0 implements RFC 9147 DTLS 1.3 for UDP-based applications and integrates DTLS into the SSL listener API. It accelerates ML-DSA signatures and ML-KEM encapsulation with AVX-512 and VAES optimizations on x86_64, and adds GREASE (RFC 8701), IKEv2 KDF support, and Elbrus2000 (e2k) targets. The release is intended for testing and development, not production, and removes Windows-on-Itanium and Windows CE build targets.

Vali Cyber ZeroLock 5 brings MFA to the hypervisor command line

Vali Cyber released ZeroLock 5 adding CLI-MFA to protect VMware ESX and Linux hypervisors from insider threats and stolen credentials.

ZeroLock 5 introduces CLI-MFA, requiring time-based one-time passwords for file access, program execution, and network operations at the hypervisor command line on ESX and Linux hosts. The release targets ransomware and nation-state actor pivots to virtualization infrastructure, exemplified by ShinyHunters' shinysp1d3r RaaS platform that encrypts VMware ESX environments using stolen credentials and SSH keys. It adds remotely deployable collectors, reusable multi-site deployment blueprints, SIEM forwarding presets, and support for VCF and ESX 6.7+.

Threat Matrix: Mapping threats across cloud web applications

Microsoft released a Cloud Web Applications Threat Matrix, a MITRE ATT&CK-aligned framework mapping threats to cloud-hosted web apps and serverless platforms.

Microsoft introduced the cloud web applications threat matrix, which organizes attack techniques for cloud-hosted web apps and serverless platforms using MITRE ATT&CK tactics, from resource development through impact. The framework covers attack paths spanning application code, managed runtimes, workload identities, and deployment pipelines, cataloging techniques such as subdomain takeover, code injection in connected repositories, compromised registry images, exposed admin interfaces, and serverless trigger injection. It builds on Microsoft's earlier Kubernetes and storage services matrices to help defenders identify visibility gaps, prioritize hardening, and plan investigations in cloud-native environments.
