September 2026 Patch Tuesday roundup: Plugs for two zero day holes among almost 1,000 fixes in Windows

Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday ships 964 fixes including two exploited Windows zero-days (CVE-2026-85880, CVE-2026-81963) and a wormable DNS RCE.

Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday includes 964 Microsoft vulnerabilities requiring customer action, a record attributed to AI-assisted bug discovery, plus 174 third-party/open-source and 23 Chromium/Edge CVEs. Two zero-days are exploited in the wild: CVE-2026-85880, a Windows ALPC heap overflow enabling AppContainer sandbox escape and privilege escalation, and CVE-2026-81963, a Windows Update Stack escalation to SYSTEM. CVE-2026-69730, an unauthenticated Windows DNS RCE, is not yet exploited but Microsoft expects exploitation, and roughly 20 bugs could be wormable. Separately, SAP issued a critical CVSS 10.0 fix for the EPP component used in S/4HANA and NetWeaver.

Critical Dell ObjectScale Vulnerabilities Allows Malicious Users to Compromise the Affected system

Dell's DSA-2026-393 fixes ObjectScale/ECS flaws including unauthenticated deserialization RCE CVE-2026-70416 rated CVSS 10.0.

Dell advisory DSA-2026-393 (September 10, 2026) covers multiple flaws in ObjectScale and Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS). CVE-2026-70416 is a critical untrusted-data deserialization RCE (CVSS 10.0) in ObjectScale before 4.4.0.0 allowing unauthenticated remote code execution and full environment takeover, credited to researcher WinD39 (Huynh Dinh Vu). Additional issues include CVE-2025-43936 improper authentication (8.1), CVE-2026-26947 privilege management (6.7), CVE-2026-36591-style weak crypto CVE-2025-36591 (4.4), CVE-2026-76104 permission assignment DoS (5.5), plus third-party CVEs in Apache Log4j, liblzma, and the Linux kernel. Dell advises upgrading to version 4.4.0.0 or later (or 4.2.0.1) and restricting management interfaces until patched.

Multiple Vulnerabilities Discovered in a SCADA System

Unit 42 details five vulnerabilities (CVSS 7.0-7.8) in ICONICS Suite SCADA software enabling privilege escalation and DoS.

Unit 42 discovered five vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-1182, CVE-2024-7587, CVE-2024-8299, CVE-2024-8300, CVE-2024-9852) in ICONICS Suite versions 10.97.2 and earlier for Windows during a 2024 security assessment. The flaws, rated CVSS 7.0-7.8, allow DLL hijacking, privilege escalation, information disclosure, denial-of-service and potentially full system compromise. ICONICS Suite is a SCADA solution with hundreds of thousands of installations in over 100 countries, widely used in critical infrastructure, and several dozen servers are internet-exposed per Unit 42 telemetry. ICONICS released patches and advisories with workarounds in 2024.

Apple Rolls Out Massive Security Update Fixing 273 Vulnerabilities Across Its Devices

Apple's coordinated rollout patches 273 unique vulnerabilities across iOS 27, macOS Golden Gate 27, watchOS and Safari, including remote code execution flaws.

Apple shipped one of its largest coordinated security updates on September 14, 2026, fixing 273 unique CVEs across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, visionOS 27, Safari 27 and Xcode 27. Highlights include CVE-2026-65414, a Bluetooth out-of-bounds write enabling remote code execution, and CVE-2026-84607, an AVEVideoEncoder race condition granting kernel privileges to sandboxed apps. macOS Golden Gate 27 covers the broadest set with 210 CVEs, and Apple states none of the flaws were exploited in the wild.

New Windows Defender ShieldCrash 0-Day Bypasses Microsoft Patch to Read Files as SYSTEM

Researcher's ShieldCrash PoC claims Microsoft Defender still allows arbitrary file reads as SYSTEM on patched Windows, bypassing the CVE-2026-69414 fix.

Researcher MSNightmare released the ShieldCrash proof of concept showing Microsoft Defender can allegedly be made to read arbitrary files with SYSTEM privileges on fully patched Windows systems, bypassing the September 2026 fix for ShieldBreak (CVE-2026-69414). Microsoft has not confirmed the bypass, and the new flaw has no CVE assignment yet. The PoC repository contains C++ project files, a Warden.dll library, and an EICAR test archive, suggesting interaction with Defender's malware-detection and file-handling workflow. Reading files as SYSTEM could expose configuration files, credentials, private keys, and other users' data, though it does not enable code execution.
