Building the materials foundation for AI

Syensqo's CTO says AI pushes semiconductors and data centers to physical limits, driving advanced materials demand and AI-accelerated materials discovery.

MIT Technology Review's Business Lab podcast, produced in partnership with Syensqo, features CTO Mike Finelli discussing how AI workloads push semiconductors and data centers to physical limits in performance, thermal management, and reliability. Syensqo develops high-voltage data center materials, semiconductor sealing materials, and immersion cooling fluids, while using AI agents to digitally synthesize millions of molecular combinations and predict performance before lab testing. Finelli describes a reinforcing cycle where AI improves materials that in turn enable better AI infrastructure.

What's Scarier Than Agents Taking over Internet? CEO Cartel Trying Take over AI

Opinion essay argues Dario Amodei's proposals for embedded evaluators and frontier AI coordination would require antitrust waivers and entrench a large-lab cartel.

The author critiques Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's proposal for embedded evaluators inside AI labs, democratic coordination on safety standards and pacing, and global coordination with authoritarian governments. He argues such coordination requires loosening antitrust law, burdening startups while shielding incumbents like Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI, and doubts verifiable global pacing given enormous defection incentives. The piece links lab motivations to data center subsidy pushback, competition from open-source and low-cost Chinese models, and upcoming IPO financial disclosures.

One runaway AI agent racked up a $50,000 cloud bill

Mandiant's AI Risk and Resilience report details prompt injection, AI supply chain compromises, agent abuse, and a runaway agent that accrued $50,000 in cloud charges.

Mandiant, drawing on Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) observations, warns that poisoned data sources, model dependencies, and extension hooks can turn AI agents into channels for reconnaissance, lateral movement, and sandbox escape. Mandiant responded to incidents involving UNC6780 (TeamPCP), who stole AI service credentials and used prompt injection against AI coding assistants, while GTIG disclosed the first confirmed criminal use of an AI-developed zero-day exploit in a planned mass exploitation campaign. Red team tests showed an AI assistant manipulated into cloning internal repositories to an external GitHub account, and a runaway accounting agent made over 15,000 costly API calls in under an hour, generating roughly $50,000 in cloud charges.

Evidence-Grounded Agentic Formulation Development in an Autonomous Laboratory

Andromeda 2, an agentic laboratory system, reaches a 50% high-performance hit rate for paclitaxel SEDDS formulations versus 17% for its predecessor and 2% for DoE.

Andromeda 2 is an agentic system that reasons over structured in-house experimental evidence and invokes computational and experimental tools to design and execute successive formulation batches for self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS). For paclitaxel it achieved a 50% high-performance hit rate versus 17% for Andromeda 1 and 2% for a wet-lab DoE campaign, identifying 12 formulations meeting all four target product profile objectives versus 6 and 0. A selected full-TPP formulation reached approximately 19% w/w apparent paclitaxel loading, about 3.3-fold higher than a published paclitaxel S-SEDDS, and an ablation showed structured evidence access increased mean AUC by 34%.

Big Tech’s AI safety rift signals disruption and disparity for enterprises

Diverging AI safety stances among major labs will make frontier model access less predictable, pushing enterprises toward routing layers and independent validation.

A public rift among leading AI labs over safety approaches - Meta's Zuckerberg backing neutral evaluators, Dario Amodei urging a slower pace, and Sam Altman calling for collaboration on standards - is creating operational challenges for enterprise IT. Analysts from Gartner and others say divergent vendor release schedules, access tiers, and regional restrictions will make frontier model access less predictable, effectively treating frontier AI as a managed supply with pricing premiums. Recommendations include routing layers between applications and providers, contractual deprecation terms, and independent validation of models before production use.
