Google Research Releases ToolGrad: Answer-First Framework Hits 99.8% Pass Rate for Tool-Use Data Generation

Google Research and partners introduce ToolGrad, a verified tool-chain-first data generation framework reaching 99.8% pass rate and boosting Gemma-3-12B to 83.1 on BFCL.

Researchers from Google, the University of Tokyo, RIKEN AIP, and Tohoku University released ToolGrad, which inverts query-first tool-use data generation by executing and verifying API chains before annotating them with user queries. On the ToolBench database of 16,000+ APIs, ToolGrad raised generation pass rate from 63.8% to 99.8% while increasing tool uses per sample from 2.1 to 3.4 and cutting tool-use steps from 34.3 to 20.0. Fine-tuning Gemma-3 at 1B, 4B, and 12B parameters on the 500-sample ToolGrad-500 dataset lifted ToolGrad-12B to 83.1 on the Berkeley Function Calling Leaderboard, near Gemini 2.5 Pro at 83.2 and ahead of GPT-5 at 74.4. Code is Apache-2.0, with the dataset, PyPI package, and models available on Hugging Face.

ToolLoop: Closed-Loop Tool-Use Data Synthesis via Decomposed Generation and Dynamic Self-Feedback

ToolLoop introduces a closed-loop synthetic data framework whose 11K examples lift a 4B model to 86.40% on BFCL tool-use evaluation.

ToolLoop decomposes tool-use data synthesis into function-name sampling, backward derivation of user queries, and forward derivation of tool calls, with dynamic self-feedback at each stage. This shifts the paradigm from generate-then-filter to generate-verify-refine, reducing inefficient and imbalanced synthetic data. A 4B model trained on 11K synthetic examples reaches 86.40% accuracy on BFCL non-reasoning mode (86.07% in an Isolate variant excluding BFCL-overlapping functions) and 72.1% on ACEBench using only 18.3% of baseline training data.

Authorization Architectures for Tool-Using AI Agents

Review paper proposes an authorization reference architecture for tool-using AI agents, identifying runtime enforcement and delegation bounds as unresolved gaps.

This review examines authorization models for tool-using AI agents that invoke APIs, databases, browsers, and protocols like MCP, arguing every consequential agent action must be traceable to a human principal, bounded by delegation, and contestable. It introduces a principal hierarchy spanning human user, operator/deployer, orchestrator agent, sub-agent, and tool endpoint, and analyzes five layers including credential lifecycle, delegation propagation, runtime enforcement, prompt injection as authorization bypass, and auditability. Drawing on 89 primary sources from 2023-2026, it proposes seven structural requirements, a four-layer reference architecture, and three deployable configurations.

Securing Claude Code: The New Compliance API, Local Visibility, and Identity Governance

Anthropic's new Compliance API endpoints expose Claude Code local session transcripts, highlighting governance gaps for endpoint AI agents.

Anthropic added local session transcript endpoints to its Compliance API on August 11, 2026, giving security teams visibility into prompts, bash commands, file operations, and MCP commands run by Claude Code harnesses on endpoints. The article argues local harnesses break the classic shared-responsibility model, citing Token Security data that 68.6% of discovered AI agents run on endpoints, and a Cloud Security Alliance survey of 418 IT and security professionals in which 82% found an unknown agent within the past year. It outlines three governance layers: Anthropic managed settings as a policy baseline, the Compliance API for cloud-visible transcripts, and endpoint telemetry to connect agent activity to identity, credentials, and permissions.

Instagram’s AI detection is a mess (again)

Instagram is mislabeling ordinary edited photos as AI Content while some AI imagery goes unlabeled, repeating a 2024 detection failure.

The Verge documents weeks of erroneous AI Content labels on Instagram, including images edited only with Canva's Background Remover or an iPhone Photos app, while some generative images escape tagging. Canva said some of its assistive AI tools were being tagged as generative and claims the issue is fixed, though users still report tagging. Meta scans IPTC and C2PA metadata and uses signals like Google's SynthID, but remains vague about detection criteria; one tester found only Meta AI-created or edited images reliably triggered labels, and an image-poisoned photo was tagged. A similar mislabeling wave hit Instagram in 2024.

Anthropic Adds Plugin Evals to Claude Code: 6 Grader Types, a No-Plugin Baseline, and a CI Gate for Skills

Anthropic ships a plugin evals workflow for Claude Code with six grader types, a no-plugin baseline arm, and a CI gate via threshold and cost flags.

Anthropic published a plugin evals workflow for Claude Code, exposed via the "claude plugin eval" command on v2.1.269+. Six grader types exist: regex, tool_used, tool_order, and file_exists are free transcript checks, while llm and baseline invoke a billed judge model. Every case runs with and without the plugin, and the delta (Δ) isolates the plugin's contribution; a Δ near zero with a failing tool_used:Skill grader indicates the skill never triggers. CI gating uses --threshold 0.8, --max-cost-usd, --trust-plugin, and --no-publish flags, with results written to a report.html under evals/results/.

NCSC Warns Shadow AI Creates New Security Risks

UK NCSC warns that unapproved AI tools used by 71% of UK employees expose corporate data and create hard-to-detect organizational security risks.

The UK's National Cyber Security Centre warned on 7 September that shadow AI, unapproved AI tools used outside organizational controls, creates visibility gaps and raises risks of data breaches, intellectual property loss, and regulatory non-compliance. It cited Microsoft research finding 71% of UK employees had used AI tools not approved by their employer. NCSC also warned AI agents can carry critical vulnerabilities, allowing attackers who exploit one to inherit the agent's data access, services and privileges, and that attackers are highly likely to abuse agents with looser guardrails. The agency recommended reducing rather than eliminating shadow AI through positive security culture and clear guardrails.

Rethinking Indirect Prompt Injection as a Test-Time Search Problem

Researchers frame indirect prompt injection as test-time search, showing added attacker compute improves vulnerability discovery and exploitation against tool-using agents.

The paper models indirect prompt injection as a test-time search over a task-dependent attack surface shaped by the environment, user task, and injection goal. The authors build an agentic attacker with a dedicated search harness that performs reconnaissance, structured strategy reasoning, and adaptive evaluation using victim-agent feedback. Experiments show more attacker test-time compute improves discovery and exploitation of injection vulnerabilities, with explicit strategy management needed to avoid redundant search. The results argue that agentic security evaluations should characterize attacker search procedures and compute budgets rather than treating attack success as budget-independent.

The main structural theorem extends bounded coefficient-ratio characterization from quadratic to arbitrary-degree polynomials via discrete convexity conditions. The students used Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol for exploration and proof ideas but independently verified all arguments; the result follows an open letter from 25 Fields Medalists voicing concerns about AI's impact on mathematical rigor.

Why "Shady AI" is Security's Next Big Governance Problem

Opinion piece argues approved-but-ungoverned AI agent use ('shady AI') is a growing enterprise risk, citing a Meta Sev 1 data-exposure incident.

In March 2026, an approved AI agent at Meta posted a forum answer publicly, exposing sensitive company and user data to unauthorized employees for over two hours and triggering a Sev 1 incident. The author contrasts shadow AI (unapproved tools) with 'shady AI' (approved tools used in unapproved or unanticipated ways), arguing the latter is harder to govern because it operates inside the organization's visibility. A July 2026 SANS survey found 76% of security teams now have a role in governing enterprise AI. The piece recommends governance-by-default environments with built-in permissions, access controls, and monitoring rather than policy and training alone.

Procedural Graphs: Self-Evolving Execution Structures for LLM Agents

Researchers introduce Procedural Graphs, self-evolving (procedure, relation, procedure) structures guiding LLM agent tool use and planning.

Procedural Graphs organize procedural knowledge into (procedure, relation, procedure) triplets to guide LLM agent actions, addressing drift such as lost objectives, out-of-order tool calls, and repeated unproductive steps. At each decision step the framework localizes the active node and a guidance model translates the surrounding subgraph into step-level situational guidance. An LLM refiner edits graph topology by contrasting failed with successful trajectories, and across datasets, task types and LLMs the approach outperforms memory-based baselines and matches or surpasses hand-designed graphs.

One contributor says he was fired for political reasons after refusing to use LLMs despite adequate stated performance, and observes fewer job ads now require LLM use. Others describe starting each day with a LeetCode problem or 30-60 minutes of hand-coding to stay sharp, contractual bans on AI-generated code for a government-adjacent embedded product over unresolved copyright issues, and inconsistent corporate policies where ChatGPT or Codex use flip-flops between allowed and blocked while a CIO mandates 70-80% AI-generated code next year.

OpenAI puts major frontier AI training run on hold over cyber risks

OpenAI paused its largest frontier RL training run for two weeks to harden research environments after Astra showed potentially critical cybersecurity capability.

OpenAI temporarily paused reinforcement learning on its latest deployment-bound models for two weeks while it hardened and red-teamed research environments and expanded monitoring. The pause followed the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident and preliminary evidence that the upcoming Astra model may meet the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold in its Preparedness Framework. The company described activation classifiers inspecting every sampled token with 30-minute alerting targets, stronger isolation and network restrictions for code execution, and broader alignment coverage across RL training stages, plus a planned Preparedness Framework update.
