Cpython: [CVE-2026-82049] tarfile extraction filters allow file modification and content disclosure via hard link to symlink

Python discloses CVE-2026-82049: tarfile extraction filters can be bypassed via hard links to symlinks, enabling file modification and content disclosure.

Stan Ulbrych disclosed CVE-2026-82049 on the Python security-announce list, forwarded to oss-security by Alan Coopersmith. The flaw affects CPython's tarfile extraction filters, which can allow file modification and content disclosure when archives contain a hard link to a symlink. Extraction-filter misuse can therefore bypass intended protections during archive unpacking.

Pyramid Solutions NetStaX EtherNet/IP Stack

CISA flags critical CVE-2026-78012 (CVSS 9.8) stack buffer overflow in Pyramid Solutions NetStaX EtherNet/IP stacks below v5.6.1, risking crashes or remote attack vectors.

CISA republished Pyramid Solutions' advisory for CVE-2026-78012, a CWE-121 stack-based buffer overflow in the NetStaX EtherNet/IP stack versions prior to 5.6.1, scored CVSS 9.8. Large Class 3 explicit-message requests can exceed the application-side receive buffer without generating a CIP error, potentially causing memory corruption, device crashes, or a silent remote attack vector. All eight adapter and scanner DLL/development kit variants, including CIP Security editions, are affected across critical manufacturing, energy, water, and chemical sectors. No public exploitation has been reported.

Compiler Can Undo Your Security Checks

Chris Domas explains at Black Hat how legal compiler optimizations can strip security checks and memory-clearing operations, turning secure C source into vulnerable binaries.

David Bombal interviews researcher Chris Domas at Black Hat USA 2026 about how the C abstract machine permits compilers to legally transform code in ways that remove security protections, delete memory-clearing operations, and introduce time-of-check to time-of-use vulnerabilities. Factors like register pressure, structure layout, and data size affect vulnerability, with examples where 17 or 33 byte buffers are safe while nearby sizes produce vulnerable code. An AI-assisted analysis of 500 million lines of open-source code identified 300 potentially dangerous patterns. Recommended mitigations include enabling compiler warnings, using sanitizers, analyzing optimized builds, and testing the exact binary that ships.

thttpd v2.26 Stack-Based Buffer Overflow in thttpd redirect CGI Program

The redirect CGI program shipped with thttpd v2.26 has a stack buffer overflow that unauthenticated attackers can trigger for crashes or possible code execution.

A stack-based buffer overflow exists in the redirect CGI program distributed with thttpd v2.26. Unsafe string concatenation when constructing redirect URLs from attacker-controlled CGI environment variables causes the overflow. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can trigger it via a crafted HTTP request, crashing the CGI process and causing denial of service. In environments lacking modern exploit mitigations, code execution may also be possible.

iceener/files-stdio-mcp-server: sandbox escape in fs_search via a symlinked directory (recursive walker validates only the top level)

iceener/files-stdio-mcp-server allows a read-side sandbox escape: fs_search follows symlinked directories while the recursive walker validates confinement only at the top level.

A vulnerability report describes a read-side sandbox escape in iceener/files-stdio-mcp-server, an MCP server for text-based file access that explicitly promises 'Sandboxed filesystem access. Only these paths are available'. The fs_search tool can follow symlinked directories outside the allowed paths, and the recursive directory-listing walker used by fs_search (and by fs_read) validates confinement only at the top level. The same flaw affects fs_read's directory-listing walker. No CVE identifier was assigned in the provided report text.

Cl0p Targets 40+ Organizations Through PTC Windchill Flaw

Cl0p claims over 40 organizations including Shell and Philips were breached by exploiting critical RCE CVE-2026-12569 in PTC Windchill and FlexPLM.

Cl0p claims more than 40 organizations were victimized via CVE-2026-12569 (CVSS 9.3), a critical deserialization-based remote code execution flaw in PTC Windchill PDMlink and FlexPLM, affecting releases prior to 11.0 M030; CISA added the flaw to its KEV catalog in June. ReliaQuest found the group deployed a custom web shell that maps vault data, decrypts all credentials in the Windchill keystore, and includes a Java class loader enabling arbitrary code execution, lateral movement, persistence, and large-scale data exfiltration without extra tooling. Named victims include Shell, Philips, Fiserv, Zebra Technologies, Ingersoll Rand, Toast, Mindray, and Apple lens supplier Largan Precision, with stolen data ranging from one gigabyte to multiple terabytes per target. The campaign mirrors Cl0p's earlier mass-exploitation extortion operations against MOVEit, Cleo, GoAnywhere, and Oracle E-Business Suite.
