Over 100,000 WordPress Sites Exposed to RCE Through Tutor LMS Vulnerability

Wordfence disclosed CVE-2026-78175, an authenticated PHP object injection chain enabling RCE in Tutor LMS affecting 100,000+ WordPress sites; fixed in 4.0.8.

Wordfence Argus discovered on August 23, 2026, that Tutor LMS 4.0.7 and earlier mishandle esc_sql() on withdrawal-account data stored via update_user_meta(), creating a serialized-length mismatch exploitable for PHP object injection through the tutor_save_withdraw_account AJAX handler. Any subscriber can reach the endpoint because it checks a nonce but no capability, and a property-oriented programming chain using Guzzle's FileCookieJar allows writing a PHP payload to the uploads directory for remote code execution. Themeum shipped version 4.0.8 on September 10 with a role check, input validation, and a field whitelist; Wordfence rated the issue CVSS 8.8.

wp2shell: incident response guide (CVE-2026-63030 + CVE-2026-60137)

Eye Security published forensic IR tooling for wp2shell (CVE-2026-63030/CVE-2026-60137), the unauthenticated WordPress core RCE chain, after WordPress.org forced auto-updates.

wp2shell chains a REST API batch-endpoint route-confusion bug (CVE-2026-63030) with an SQL injection in WP_Query's author__not_in parameter (CVE-2026-60137), giving unauthenticated attackers rogue admin and code execution on default installs. Adam Kues of Searchlight Cyber discovered the flaw, a public PoC exists on GitHub, and WordPress.org forced automatic updates across an estimated 200M+ sites. Eye Security released a compromise-scanner WordPress plugin and browser extension and notes database artifacts (oEmbed cache rows, changesets) are the primary evidence since the attack is log-blind; fixed versions are 6.8.6, 6.9.5, and 7.0.2.

Risky Bulletin: Russia tells data centers to deploy drone defenses

Russia ordered data center operators to deploy drone strike defenses under a Putin decree allowing temporary state takeover of unprotected critical infrastructure.

The Russian government instructed data center operators to deploy protections against drone strikes under a presidential decree signed by Putin that allows temporary state administration of critical infrastructure operators failing to defend against Ukrainian hacks and drone strikes. Although data centers are not formally critical infrastructure in Russia, the decree applies to them because other sectors depend heavily on cloud services; Russia has more than 180 data centers, over 80% in the European region within range of Ukrainian strikes. The digest also reports a Dropbox breach affecting nearly 5,000 accounts via the Lenovo ID integration, spyware attacks on at least 14 Serbians using NoviSpy or Pegasus, and a password recovery attack targeting hundreds of thousands of X accounts tied to the new X Money service. Other items include a 14-hour compromise of Coder's Cloudflare infrastructure delivering malicious Terraform modules, donor data breaches at Davayte and You Are Not Alone via the Stripe/WooCommerce integration, a $2.5M Aquifer crypto heist, and a TVING breach exposing data of almost 40 million accounts.

Adobe Commerce Zero-Day Exploited to Backdoor Online Stores

Sansec found attackers exploiting an Adobe Commerce/Magento zero-day (StyleSmuggler) since September 4 to deploy Rust backdoors on online stores.

Threat actors are actively exploiting a zero-day RCE in Adobe Commerce and Magento 2.4.7-2.4.9, injecting PHP code via generated failure reports and executing it through Magento's payment-failure email, with no user interaction required. Exploitation began September 4 and succeeds even against stores running the July and August 2026 patches; the Rust backdoor disguises itself as kworker/u:8:0 or fc-cache and hides C&C communication inside fake NTP replies. Adobe's September 8 Patch Tuesday updates may not include a StyleSmuggler fix.

Retrospectively Reverse-Engineering Apple's Neural Engine

A developer reverse-engineers Apple's M1 Neural Engine architecture, mapping compute cores, MAC datapaths, and schedulers to explain the NPU's decline as transformers displaced CNN workloads.

A developer who previously maintained a reverse-engineered Linux driver for Apple's Neural Engine (ANE) published a retrospective deep dive mapping the M1 ANE's full internal architecture: compute, datapath, scheduler, memory, and execution model. The M1 ANE has 16 compute cores with 128 FP16 (or 256 INT8) MAC lanes each, totaling 2048 parallel MAC lanes, using 32-bit Q16.16 fixed-point accumulation with FP16 readout and an accumulator that saturates at 2^15. The author argues the ANE's dataflow was architected around the predictable reuse patterns of 2017-era CNN workloads (dating to the A11 Bionic), which autoregressive transformer decode broke, limiting its usefulness for general ML. With Apple's M5 folding ANE cores into GPU cores to tout LLM performance, the post frames this as the beginning of the end for the standalone NPU.

WordPress 7.1.1 Maintenance and Security Release

WordPress 7.1.1 patches an unauthenticated stored XSS (CVE-2026-93485) in wpautop(), exploitable via published comments, with CVSS 3.1 score 7.1.

WordPress 7.1.1, released 17 September 2026, contains 11 security fixes and 17 core bug fixes. The headline flaw is CVE-2026-93485, an unauthenticated stored XSS in wpautop() affecting WordPress core up to and including 7.1, rated CVSS 3.1 7.1. A payload submitted through the ordinary comment form survives wp_kses() because a newline placeholder in quoted attribute values becomes a '>' that breaks wpautop()'s regex parsing, enabling script execution in the site origin for any visitor. Comment moderation slows but does not prevent exploitation; the fix makes the regex aware of quoting, and backports shipped to older branches.

Senior engineers are spending their week cleaning up AI-generated code

New Relic study finds AI-generated code doubles critical runtime issues, with senior engineers losing a third of their week to fixes.

A New Relic survey of U.S. technology leaders reports AI now writes the majority of shipped code, with senior SRE and DevOps engineers spending up to a third of their week triaging and refactoring it. A large majority of organizations had at least one AI-related production failure in the past six months, and roughly three in ten saw newly introduced security vulnerabilities. AI-generated code showed nearly twice as many critical runtime issues as peer-reviewed human-authored code, with gaps concentrated in edge cases, concurrency, deprecated APIs, and complex state changes. Most teams now prompt AI tools to embed logs and traces directly into generated code.

When the prompt becomes the payload: A practical pen-testing guide for GenAI, LLM and RAG applications

CSO Online publishes a practical penetration-testing guide for GenAI, LLM, and RAG applications, covering prompt injection, retrieval poisoning, and tenant isolation testing.

The guide frames LLM applications as attack graphs spanning prompts, retrieval layers, vector stores, tools, identities, and downstream APIs, arguing that conventional web testing misses instruction-vs-data channel risks. It builds on OWASP prompt injection guidance (direct vs. indirect injection) and NIST's 2025 adversarial machine-learning taxonomy, noting that RAG and fine-tuning do not remove injection risk. Recommended practices include documenting trust transitions across components, using canaries and synthetic records to avoid test side effects, running multi-turn and obfuscated injection campaigns, and verifying chains from poisoned documents to observable state changes. It also details testing RAG pipelines via controlled document poisoning across metadata, OCR layers, and code comments, plus cross-tenant isolation checks on retrieved document IDs.
