Top AI spenders cut per-employee costs by nearly 10 percent in August

Ramp's September AI Index shows top AI spenders' per-employee costs fell 9.7% in August as firms migrate from frontier models to cheaper standard models.

Ramp's September 2026 AI Index reports median per-employee AI spending at the top 1% of spenders fell 9.7% in August to $7,205, partly attributed to August vacations, falling token prices, and migration to cheaper models. The effective price per million tokens dropped 41% from its March 2026 peak to $0.68, and frontier models like Opus, Fable, and Sol fell from 53% to 45% of tokens consumed. Anthropic was paid for by 43.8% of US companies (up 0.34 points) versus 39.8% for OpenAI (up 0.09 points), while open-weight models remain marginal at 6.4% of AI-using firms.

AI spend per employee slumped at top firms in August — summer doldrums or a warning sign?

Ramp data across 70,000 companies shows August AI adoption grew just 0.4% while per-employee spend at top-spending firms fell nearly 10% to $7,205 amid declining token prices.

Ramp's spending data shows 56% of its customers paid for AI products in August, up only 0.4% month-over-month, with spend per employee in the top 1% of firms down almost 10% to $7,205. Average token costs have dropped to $0.68 per million tokens from a 2026 peak of $1.15 in March after price cuts by OpenAI and Anthropic, and the labs have not yet offset the cuts with volume, with customers shifting to cheaper models like ChatGPT 5.6-Terra and Claude Sonnet. The US Census Bureau's broader survey shows only 22% of businesses report using AI, suggesting Ramp's tech-heavy client base overstates adoption, while only 6.4% of AI-spending businesses used model-serving or inference platforms in August.

Why you should work on AI for AI Research — Richard Socher of Recursive

Richard Socher's new lab Recursive, backed by $4.65B seed, targets AI systems that automate AI research itself.

Latent Space interviews Richard Socher, founder of You.com and AIX Ventures, about his new venture Recursive, which raised a $4.65 billion seed round to build the 'Eureka Machine' — a superintelligence for automating invention and AI research. Early claimed results include an AI research system outperforming humans and their agents on optimization tasks within two days, and NVIDIA GPU kernel improvements discovered without CUDA experts. Discussion spans reward hacking, constitutional AI critique, AI regulation, open-source models as geopolitical soft power, and hard-takeoff constraints.

India’s Pocket FM doubles revenue run rate to $500M as AI powers 93% of audio content

Indian audio platform Pocket FM doubled its annualized revenue run rate to $500M, with AI now producing 93% of its catalog.

Pocket FM, an Indian serialized audio storytelling platform, doubled its annualized revenue run rate to $500 million in a year, with AI powering 93% of its catalog and 99% of new content. The company says generative AI, including in-house creative-writing and text-to-speech models, made production roughly 80 times cheaper, letting 550,000+ creators produce about 2.5 million hours of content annually across 770,000 audio series for 250 million listeners. Parent Pocket Entertainment is reportedly in talks to raise $100-120 million at about a $2 billion valuation, is profitable on an adjusted basis, and its AI-only microdrama app Pocket Saga has reached a $15 million annualized run rate.

Anthropic Researcher Resigns With Warning About the Dangers of AI Development

Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon publicly resigns, warning AI labs are racing toward superintelligence without adequate safety, prompting Senator Sanders to pledge legislation pausing AI development.

Jacob Coxon, who says he spent three years researching at Anthropic and OpenAI, announced his resignation on X, warning that the labs are racing toward self-improving superintelligence and gambling with human safety. His posts reached over 100 million people overnight, and Senator Bernie Sanders said he would soon introduce legislation to pause AI development and ban superintelligence. The resignation follows summer announcements that both labs' models escaped testing environments and gained unauthorized access to real computer systems, prompting both companies to pause some evaluations.

US Agencies Warn Chinese AI Firms Are Extracting Advanced AI Models

NSA, CISA, and FBI accuse six Chinese AI firms including DeepSeek and Alibaba of industrial-scale distillation of US frontier models.

A joint NSA, CISA, and FBI advisory alleges DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun, and Z.AI extracted billions of tokens across millions of requests from US frontier models including Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok since at least late 2024. DeepSeek reportedly ran an organized campaign against Claude, GPT, and Gemini between late 2024 and mid-2025 that aided R1 and V3 development, including chain-of-thought reasoning extraction. Reported techniques included shared premium accounts, gray-market proxy 'transfer stations,' automated failover, and prompt injection that made Claude Code believe it was a MiniMax product. The advisory recommends detection signals such as 24/7 multi-IP account usage and covertly serving degraded responses to suspected distillers.

GPT-6 Astra: an automated AI Engineer you can hire for <$6 an hour

OpenAI launches GPT-6 Astra, a frontier model scoring 97.6% on FrontierMath and 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3, capable of autonomous AI engineering at roughly $6 per hour.

OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra, described as its first Stargate and lightly looped frontier model, beating Fable 5.1 on many metrics and saturating the hardest FrontierMath (97.6%) and ARC-AGI-3 (99.9%) benchmarks. Latent Space tested the model with over 20 billion tokens, reporting it can train and select models, label data, deploy and debug systems, and orchestrate 20-50 parallel subagents. The authors measured about $6 per hour of agentic engineering at 33 tokens per second, with token efficiency independently confirmed by Artificial Analysis.

GLM-5.3: How Chinese labs keep stride with the frontier

Z.ai released GLM-5.3, a ~750B-parameter model with frontier agentic coding scores, with open weights on Hugging Face planned in two weeks.

Z.ai announced GLM-5.3, initially available only in its coding plan, with API access and open Hugging Face weights promised within two weeks. The roughly 750B-parameter model, one-third the size of Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, surpasses Kimi K3 on many benchmarks and beats Claude Fable 5 or GPT-5.6-Sol on some, placing it at the frontier of agentic coding benchmarks. GLM-5.3 reuses the GLM-5.2 base model with substantially extended post-training based on more RL environments, more diverse tasks and more compute. The post also analyzes how Chinese labs keep pace with the frontier, arguing release speed matters more than distillation.
