Docker Sandboxes Vulnerabilities Let Malicious Guests Escape Workspace and Access Host Files

Docker fixed two symlink-race flaws in Docker Sandboxes, CVE-2026-77179 and CVE-2026-79994, letting malicious guests escape the workspace and read host files; fixed in 0.42.0.

Docker patched CVE-2026-77179 (Critical) and CVE-2026-79994 (High) in Docker Sandboxes 0.42.0, released September 7. Both are time-of-check-to-time-of-use symlink races: CVE-2026-77179 in the macOS virtio-fs host server (versions 0.28.0 to before 0.42.0) can allow a malicious guest to read or modify arbitrary host files and potentially achieve code execution, while CVE-2026-79994 in the guest-to-host Unix socket relay (0.37.0 to before 0.42.0) can redirect host connections to arbitrary AF_UNIX sockets. Docker recommends upgrading and, as interim mitigation, using clone mode and avoiding read-write host mounts.

Critical Docker Sandbox Vulnerabilities Enable Malicious Guests to Escape Isolated microVM Workspaces

Docker patched two sandbox-escape flaws, CVE-2026-77179 and CVE-2026-79994, letting malicious guest workloads access host files and sockets.

Docker fixed CVE-2026-77179 (Critical), a virtio-fs symlink race in Docker Sandboxes 0.28.0 through before 0.42.0 on macOS that could let a guest read or modify arbitrary host files and potentially reach code execution, and CVE-2026-79994 (High), a time-of-check-to-time-of-use flaw in the guest-to-host Unix socket relay affecting 0.37.0 through before 0.42.0. Fixes shipped in Docker Sandboxes 0.42.0, released September 7; Docker recommends clone mode and avoiding read-write host mounts as interim mitigations. We got admin access to Baseten's production GitHub in 25 minutes

Strix autonomous hacking agent extracted a working GitHub token with repo admin rights from Baseten's public Harbor image; Baseten rotated it next day.

Strix, an autonomous hacking agent, scanned *.baseten.co without credentials and found a public Harbor container registry project anonymously exposing the baseten/baseten-app image. A GitHub personal access token for basetenbot, embedded in Docker build history since March 2023, still worked in July 2026 and granted admin/push rights to basetenlabs/baseten, flux-cd, and homebrew-tap plus read/write on private customer repos. Baseten, valued at $13 billion, confirmed the issue as critical and rotated the token within a day.

One Compromised Kubernetes Node Can Expose Every Workload Identity Running on It

Unit42 researchers show a root attacker on a Kubernetes node can manipulate cgroups to make the local SPIRE agent issue other workloads' identities.

Palo Alto Networks Unit42 demonstrated that an attacker with root access on a Kubernetes node can alter Linux cgroup data so the local SPIRE agent matches a target pod's selectors and issues its SVID to an attacker-controlled process. The technique affects SPIFFE/SPIRE deployments, which assume node trustworthiness, and means every workload identity on a compromised node should be considered exposed. Researchers have not observed the method in the wild and released Spooffe, a testing tool to measure node identity exposure.

When Agents Look Like Beacons: NIDS Evasion by Model Context Protocol Traffic

Research shows Model Context Protocol agent traffic structurally resembles C2 beaconing and evades Suricata signatures and RITA behavioral scoring in testbeds.

An arXiv study demonstrates that Model Context Protocol (MCP) JSON-RPC traffic over Streamable HTTP mimics the polling patterns of C2 frameworks like Cobalt Strike and is not flagged as anomalous by standard enterprise defenses. In a Docker testbed with eleven traffic profiles across three TLS conditions, Suricata with the Emerging Threats Open ruleset produced near-zero alerts and RITA assigned a consistent 0.0 beacon score, regardless of jitter or TLS inspection. The authors propose an agent-native network indication standard using Agent-Native ALPN and out-of-band headers.

Exposed Vite servers are being probed for AWS and Azure credentials

F5 honeypots logged 32,000+ probes against Vite file-access bypass CVE-2026-39364, hunting AWS and Azure credentials on exposed dev servers.

F5 Labs reported 32,000+ scan attempts (807 attack sessions) against exposed Vite servers in August, up from 1,732 attempts over the prior three months. Attackers exploited CVE-2026-39364 (CVSS 8.2), which bypasses Vite's server.fs.deny protection via parameters like ?raw and ?import&raw, affecting Vite 7.1.0 to before 7.3.2 and Vite 8 before 8.0.5. Scanners cycled wordlists for environment files, AWS keys, Azure tokens and IaC state files, also combining older Vite CVEs (2025-30208, 2025-31125, 2024-45811) and probing a Next.js middleware bypass. Only CVE-2025-31125 is currently in CISA's KEV catalog.

Homebrew 7.0.0 Adds Built-In Vulnerability Scanner and Stronger Package Sandboxing

Homebrew 7.0.0 ships a native brew vulns scanner, OSV-backed advisory database, stronger sandboxing, and fixes a sandbox-escape issue.

Homebrew 7.0.0 introduces a built-in 'brew vulns' command that scans installed formulae, dependencies, and Brewfiles against a new Homebrew-specific advisory database and OSV.dev data, distinguishing backported fixes from outdated versions. The release hardens sandboxing by blocking home-directory reads during builds, disabling network access at install time, and replacing Bubblewrap with Landlock on Linux. It also fixes moderate-severity GHSA-5263-whxq-77hp, where a malicious cask could execute code outside the macOS sandbox via LaunchServices, and drops macOS Catalina while moving Intel Macs to Tier 3.

Hackers Actively Exploiting Gitea n-day RCE Vulnerability in the Wild to Hijack Instances

Chinese-speaking Red Heron actors mass-exploit Gitea n-day RCE CVE-2026-60004 to steal source code, credentials, and pivot into victim networks.

Acronis Threat Research Unit reports active in-the-wild exploitation of Gitea RCE CVE-2026-60004 (CVSS 9.8, versions 1.17-1.27.0, fixed in 1.27.1) by a Chinese-speaking actor dubbed Red Heron. The actor scanned 1,386 Gitea servers across seven countries, held a separate list of 477 Taiwan-based targets, and confirmed victims in Canada, Argentina, Taiwan, the US, and Sri Lanka. Intrusions deployed the JITTERLY Linux implant with the SIXZUT LD_PRELOAD rootkit, stole password hashes and SSH keys, and in one case gained root admin access to a three-node Proxmox cluster.
