Chaotic Eclipse Released A PoC For NVIDIA GreenSection Memory Corruption Zero-Day

Researcher Chaotic Eclipse released GreenSection, a PoC exploit for an NVIDIA Windows user-mode shared-memory flaw enabling out-of-bounds writes and potential dwm.exe compromise.

Researcher Chaotic Eclipse (aka Nightmare Eclipse) released a PoC named GreenSection for a zero-day in NVIDIA's Windows user-mode components. Multiple NVIDIA components share a global memory section in BaseNamedObjects with full read/write access to all users; although checks prevent misuse, runtime reuse of section data can cause an out-of-bounds write. The unstable PoC crashes applications using Vulkan or OpenGL and could potentially cross user boundaries or compromise the Windows Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe), though impact was not fully investigated. The researcher recently published similar zero-day PoCs against Kaspersky Endpoint Security, Avast Antivirus, and CrowdStrike Falcon.

“Tick” Group Continues Attacks

Unit 42 tracks the Tick espionage group attacking Korean and Japanese defense and high-tech targets with Daserf, Minzen, 9002, Invader, and custom Gh0st RAT variants.

The Tick group has conducted long-running espionage attacks against organizations in the Republic of Korea and Japan, focusing on defense and high-tech companies holding intellectual property, and repeatedly attacked one high-profile Japanese target for three years. Unit 42 links the Daserf backdoor, the 9002 RAT, and the Invader backdoor through shared C2 infrastructure used between July 2012 and April 2013. Minzen samples install a "NamelessHdoor" backdoor derived from publicly available code over a decade old, modified with ReflectiveDLLLoader DLL injection, and the group also uses custom Gh0st RAT variants. Tick has shifted from privacy-protected domain registration to compromised websites for C2 infrastructure.

Shadow AI in Financial Services | Risk & Governance

Huntress warns financial services firms that unsanctioned 'Shadow AI' tool use creates data leakage and compliance risks faster than governance controls can keep pace.

Huntress argues Shadow AI — employee use of unapproved AI tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot — is spreading across financial services faster than visibility and controls. Uploading regulated customer data into public generative models risks breaches of client confidentiality, data protection rules, and market conduct obligations. The piece recommends secure web gateways, DNS filtering, DLP, application allowlisting, and corporate SSO/MFA for approved tools rather than outright bans, which can push usage onto personal devices.

NCSC Warns Shadow AI Creates New Security Risks

UK NCSC warns that unapproved AI tools used by 71% of UK employees expose corporate data and create hard-to-detect organizational security risks.

The UK's National Cyber Security Centre warned on 7 September that shadow AI, unapproved AI tools used outside organizational controls, creates visibility gaps and raises risks of data breaches, intellectual property loss, and regulatory non-compliance. It cited Microsoft research finding 71% of UK employees had used AI tools not approved by their employer. NCSC also warned AI agents can carry critical vulnerabilities, allowing attackers who exploit one to inherit the agent's data access, services and privileges, and that attackers are highly likely to abuse agents with looser guardrails. The agency recommended reducing rather than eliminating shadow AI through positive security culture and clear guardrails.

The hidden risks of shadow AI

UK NCSC guidance warns shadow AI use by employees risks data exposure, lost data control, and attacker exploitation of vulnerable AI agents.

The UK NCSC warns that 'shadow AI'—use of AI tools not captured in organizational approved systems—is widespread, with 71% of employees reporting unapproved AI tool use. Risks include exposure of sensitive company and customer data, loss of visibility and control when data goes to consumer AI services, and new attack opportunities if adversaries exploit vulnerabilities in AI agents with access to corporate systems. The NCSC advises reducing rather than eliminating the risk through positive security culture, understanding employee needs, offering secure alternatives, and following its joint guidance on careful adoption of agentic AI services.

Once popular for attacking AI, ASCII smuggling is embraced by spammers

Spammers adopt ASCII smuggling—invisible Unicode tag characters—to evade email filters, with Microsoft Defender detections spiking to 2.5 million per day.

ASCII smuggling hides text in Unicode tag characters (e.g., U+E0041 for "A") that are invisible to humans but readable by LLMs and text processors. The technique gained attention as a stealthy prompt-injection vector and is now used by spammers to obfuscate keywords from email detectors. Microsoft reported Defender for Office smuggling detections jumped from roughly 21,000 per day to over 1.3 million in early February, reaching 2.5 million within four days, before falling sharply in mid-May.

New AI Attack Hides Malicious Instructions in Normal-Looking Text to Evade Safety Filters

Check Point researchers show crafted prose hides policy-violating instructions that bypass all tested LLM gatekeepers, including GPT-4o mini and Llama Guard 3.

A new prompt-crafting technique embeds malicious payloads inside grammatical, natural-looking text without Base64, invisible Unicode, or obvious encodings, defeating lightweight pre-screening gatekeepers. In testing, all four evaluated gatekeeper models—gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18, gpt-oss-safeguard:20b, claude-3-haiku-20240307, and llama-guard3:8b—classified the crafted wrappers as safe at a 100% bypass rate across 23 obfuscated prompts. GPT-5 Thinking in high-reasoning mode recovered and acted on the hidden instruction in 17 of 18 tests (~94.4%), often spending over a minute and multiple Python executions. Researchers recommend paraphrasing untrusted input, hardening gatekeeper policies, and applying defense-in-depth controls for agentic deployments.
